The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's a thread to post about and discuss the Daily Show. Just wanna say "Man, that joke about Bush being dumb was great yesterday!" then here's the place to say it. Wanna discuss something that might get a discussion going, post it here! Naked pictures of Stephen Colbert? Post em here!

For the international members, I'm not sure if the show gets airred in the UK, Ireland or Guyana, but it's worth watching almost every night! You can grab full episodes via BitTorrent at ShunTV. The site was shut down for like a month, but it's back up now and should be posting episodes regularly, but I'm not sure all the September episodes that airred during the down time will be put up.

I'll post the links to the Torrents here in this thread. You need to register (free) with the site to access it, but some sites also have torrent files that you can't actually download with unless you're registered. So, if you have BiTorrent and know it works, but the torrents I'm posting don't work, go the site and register.

I'm linking two torrents. First, Oct 4th's episode, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the show (Benny, I suggest you watch, you know how cool Tutu is). The second is the Bill O'Reilly interview of Jon Stewert which I will post about in a second. I'm posting a video with Bill O'Reilly to offset how cool Tutu is.

OK, the deal with the O'Reilly interiew is this: Jon Stewart went to go get interview by O'Reilly, and O'Reilly repeatedly refered the audience of the Daily Show (the broadcast audience, not the studio audience) as "stoner slackers." Jon Stewart ran with and took it as humor, although O'Reilly clearly menat it. He even refered to the "research" that showed "87%" of the Daily Show audience are "intoxicated when they watch the program." Again, Jon Stewart was not offended by this, and said OK when O'Reilly presented this "fact."

But...Comedy Central did take offense. The next day, they released several University studies that showed that the Daily Show's audience was more educated than the O'Reilly Factor/No Spin Zone audience and were more informed about the issues.

Here's the kicker for me: At the end of the interview, O'REilly said he'd be coming on the show next month. What will he have to say about his remarks and those studies?

That was the site. It went down for almost a month and is back. Shit I don't remember which episode that was. If you look for it online and find the date it aired, I can get it to you.

And yeah, Steve Carell unfortunately left the show, the only person to leave the show I thought was a really big loss.

Yeah, the best part about Mo Rocca (he's still with the show) is he's just like Tucker Carlson. I mean, the resemble is crazy:

I agree that mo rocca is underused, but Stephen Colbert and Rob Cordory are sooo funny.

Jon Stewart once nearly quit The Daily Show over "asshole" coworkers and stuff

Friday night, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert gave a candid talk to a crowd in Montclair, NJ at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival. Sharilyn Johnson of Third Beat reports that Stewart admitted that after taking over "The Daily Show" from previous host Craig Kilborn in 1999, Stewart wanted to bail on the job.

“What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were assholes,” Stewart said. He ultimately decided to stick around for the job although he said that it took him about two and a half years to get comfortable. But his decision to stay came after much resistance from Kilborn's previous staff, many of whom Stewart inherited.

One of those staffers was a young actor named Stephen Colbert, whose first interaction with Stewart was marked by the type of friendly competition the two men would see throughout their careers. When Stewart was first hired as the "Daily Show" host, Comedy Central held a press conference to make the announcement, and Colbert, as a mock reporter for "The Daily Show," covered the event. He deadpanned to Stewart: "Does this announcement have any effect on the prospects of me getting the hosting job?”

At the Montclair event, Colbert fleshed out the relationship that he and Stewart have developed over the years. Kristin Wald of Baristanet, who also covered the event, wrote that Colbert compared his and Stewart's relationship to that of musicians Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. Early in his career, Costello tried desperately to emulate Springsteen, but in failing to mimic the New Jersey rocker, Costello developed his own personal style.

“I tried to be like Jon Stewart,” Colbert explained. “And by trying to be him, I found myself.”

Beyond the origin stories of "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" as we know them today, Stewart and Colbert shared a few other anecdotes from behind the scenes at the show. Stewart said that the worst guest he ever had was, surprisingly, British actor Hugh Grant.

“And we’ve had dictators on the show," Stewart quipped. He remembered Grant as being especially unpleasant to deal with, and promised he never would return.

Another guest unlikely to return is Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens. The singer-songwriter appeared on Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" in 2010, and his inclusion set off the ire of Salman Rushdie, a friend of "The Daily Show" who was the target of a fatwa that Mr. Islam endorsed in the '80s.

After Stewart learned that Rushdie was offended, he reached out to Islam to find out how he really felt -- and the conversation did not leave Stewart confident that Islam was truly remorseful.

"Death for free speech is a deal breaker,” Stewart said.

so after that, i had to look up the Hugh Grant interview...yeah

Hugh Grant may have been the worse behind the scenes, but the most painfully awkward inverview is one from 2000 with two of the Spice Girls. This is just painful to watch.

Oof what a bitch. She took that shit way too seriously.

I think we saw a few seconds of the real Posh Spice (whatever her name is) there. I bet she's a terrible person to be around.

Stewart handled it like a champ. There's a guy who's been heckled more than a few times.

I couldn't wait to watch this, to see how much of cunt she was, but I honestly can't see what ye're all seeing. Maybe it's my bias (ye all know how much I love cookie cutter pop bands), but she just tried to give as good as she got. Stewart obviously "won" but then he is a professional comedian. He spent the whole show tearing them to pieces and she obviously just thought "fuck this" and fought back, fair fucks to her I say.

Well, when I said it was painful to watch, I was meant it was awkward because interviews like this a supposed to be cordial and light-hearted with amusing anecdotes and playful ribbing and banter, and there was clearly some annoyed, passive-aggressive dislike, first coming from Beckham towards Stewart, but then from Stewart to Beckham. I don't know much about Victoria Beckham, and I wouldn't say this interview is says much about her one way or another, but it clearly was awkward.

Two things of note on the Posh Spice interview:

1. Jon Stewart used to wear remarkably ill-fitting suits.

2. The interview went downhill fast after he made the "cyclops" joke about her kid. Her facial expression says it all. She clearly didn't get he was being ironic and basically saying, "There's no way your child could've been ugly." I think she didn't know how to take the joke.

John Oliver did a great job filling in for Stewart. Hope he gets rewarded and gets his own show. And not that stand up show he has.

Agreed that Oliver did a great job filling in the big man's seat, but I'm not sure I want him to leave TDS. Stewart said before he left on his break that Oliver was a big part of the writing staff there.

Y'all catch the finale? Had some really touching moments in there, but this stole the show.
