Iambaytor
Yeah and that's what I'm saying, they shouldn't have tossed in the bit about the Doomsday virus. The rabies was mentioned, the rabies "test" and the speech the specialist gave about the infected dog was intact, and then the movie popped in a red herring with the demonic possession thing. But for the most part I think the remake succeeded, you have to admit that Jay Hernandez was as close to Manu as we were likely to get under the circumstances and he was a fucking badass to the end. Panch
Eh. Was such a fan of the original, I just couldn't get passed the short-comings of the remake. The scene that did it (or didn't do it) was the scene in the hallway when they first encounter the first 'infected'. I was going into the remake with the thought that 'if they don't get this right...'. And you know what? They dropped they ball. What was so great about the original was what that scene did! It was a tight, long hallway that was scary cause it was a deathtrap. In the remake it just didn't feel the same. Go back and see.
Reverend Jax
What about the Zombie Sheep one from a few years back?
Iambaytor
What about the Zombie Sheep one from a few years back? Ah, Black Sheep, that truly was a gem. It's was like a nature attacks/zombie/werewolf movie all rolled into one beautiful package and it was wonderful.
Panch
Awesome premise, but is it TRULY a zombie movie? Hey Baytor, what's your favorite Romero zombie film?
Iambaytor
I'm so close to saying Day of the Dead, but Dawn had less slow parts and it really was as close to perfect as a horror movie can get even if it wasn't as gory as Day. Night of the Living Dead was good but it really is kinda dated.
Panch
Since you didn't say Day, I'm just gonna say it. Nah, Day really is my fave. Not taking anything away from Night or Dawn! Both are perfect in their own way, but Day wins for me. You know, Night doesn't feel dated to me. I watch it every once and a while (probably the one I've seen the most) and it always feels fresh. I love Night, and it's a classic in every sense of the word. Now Dawn. You're totally right about it being perfect. It truly is in every way. Not just as a zombie movie, but as a movie itself (Night too).
Iambaytor
I think what bothers me about Night is how Ben is really the only character you can root for, in the remake you got Barbara as well but in the original you're pretty much stuck with Ben, who's great, but you just feel sorry for him for having to be stuck with all these useless bastards. One of the best endings of all time though.

Panch
Great movie! I really liked that remake. My boy Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) did very well in telling the same, but still different Romero story.
Mr. Hakujin
I'm actually watching watching Dawn of the Dead (remake) later tonight... I'm totally gonna put that on a t-shirt and sell it on e-bay.
Panch
So Baytor, what do you think about Romero's 'aware' zombies (Bub, Big Daddy)? Edited June 22, 2009 by Panch
Iambaytor
Bub was pretty awesome, Big Daddy should have died at the end i felt, it would have made his side story resonate more. Neither one is as cool as Fido.

Panch
Bub was pretty awesome, Big Daddy should have died at the end i felt, it would have made his side story resonate more. Neither one is as cool as Fido. Fido is the man, err... zombie, but I was talkin' about the idea of an 'aware' zombie. Romero wasn't the first to introduce 'him/her', but he (obviously) finds them important. In my universe, zombies wouldn't ever be like that, but what Romero says what it is. You know, being the Zombie Godfather and all.
Iambaytor
People seem to get hung up on the thinking zombies but even as far back as Night you see them using rocks and shying away from flames. This signifies that there's something going on and it stands to reason that they could slowly re-learn what they once knew, obviously they would be at the intelligence level of a toddler but they could learn some things. Firing a gun was a bit much, or at least firing it well, but all the things Bub demonstrated don't bother me. Now Big Daddy seemed to be a bit TOO smart, so did his army. Here's a quick question, in Romero's universe anyone recently dead comes back to life. What about a case where someone is using a difribulator and the patient's heart stops momentarily? Do they come back as a half-zombie?
The NZA
The Resident Evil series...1-3, plus the animated. anything redeemable past 1? GO!
Iambaytor
Okay I'll field this one for now. Resident Evil - I was fucking giddy about this movie when it was in pre-production, it sounded like my dreams come true (not to mention there hadn't been really anything on the zombie front since Return of the Living Dead 3 (I think)) Okay, so the first 40 minutes ripped off cube, so what? Okay so none of the characters from the game are in it, so what? Okay, she just... wait, what the fuck? She just fucking kicked a dog in the face! It was at this point that I realized that this was just a really retarded action movie that featured zombies, which was okay despite the fact that I've seen gorier kids shows and the ending was stupid. Resident Evil Apocalypse - Awesome, they fixed it and I like this movie they've managed to capture the feel of the game. Then Alice comes into the movie by riding a motorcycle through the second story window of a church (it's never explained why or how) and the movie removes its pants, places them on its head, and begins flinging its shit at passersby all the while giggling like a schoolgirl. Resent Evil Extinction - Haven't watched it, probably never will, it has put the fear in me. Resident Evil Degeneration - Haven't seen it, it and Dead Space Downfall are on my list of "to watch someday maybe" titles.
HypnotizinChikns
Resident Evil 1 was full of awesome. The other two (err 3?) are classic examples of bleeding a perfectly good thing to death. I'll be watching Pontypool this weekend (yays!). What are the general thoughts on the 28 days later series? Iambaytor
First one was an one of the most underrated overrated movies I've ever seen. 28 Weeks was great till they killed the American sniper, then it tailed off. I would still like to see a 3rd installment someday however.

Firing a gun was a bit much, or at least firing it well, but all the things Bub demonstrated don't bother me. Now Big Daddy seemed to be a bit TOO smart, so did his army. I read (somewhere) that it was always Romero's wish to make zombies 'smart'. It's the idea that even though their monsters, they're still us. We're not all that different. Here's a quick question, in Romero's universe anyone recently dead comes back to life. What about a case where someone is using a difribulator and the patient's heart stops momentarily? Do they come back as a half-zombie? Like in The Dead Next Door (kinda)! Who knows, I've always thought Romero's flicks had a certain 'realism' to them (it's why I asked the question about aware zombies). Something like that wouldn't seem real to me. The Resident Evil series...1-3, plus the animated. anything redeemable past 1? GO! RE1 - Great! I loved it! Got kinda weird towards the end, but great. I didn't mind so much about the non-game characters (since I didn't play the game much). RE2 - Crap! I hated it! That movie is a perfect example on how NOT to listen to the fans (that and Spidey 3... yeah. I said it). Fanboys fucked that movie up. RE3 - Better, but still crap. I didn't have many expectations for this, but was hopeful. Nope. RE: Degeneration - Wow! Great flick. Very worthy to my collection. Baytor, must watch! I'll be watching Pontypool this weekend (yays!). Where and how? What are the general thoughts on the 28 days later series? Best thing to happen to zombies since the Resident Evil games. I feel that once the 3rd flick comes out, it'll be the British's own zombie masterpiece. Equivalent to what Romero's are to America and Fulci's to Italy. Iambaytor
Hey, speaking of Italian zombie movies that walk the fine line between mediocre and genius, have you seen Cemetery Man?
Panch
Yes, and that's a great description! Although, madness is probably a closer one. And it's really that reason why it didn't make my cut. Let me just say though... that chick... was GORGEOUS! Did she not have the most beautiful pair of tits in any zombie movie? I was on the fence for a few days whether to keep it or not... just cause of them!
Iambaytor
I actually sold it and bought a new version recently, it's more of an existenial thing that happens to feature zombies but it really was pretty good (even if it did steal its ending from St. Elsewhere) Apparently the studio originaly wanted Matt Dillon to play Franceso, I'm not quite sure how I feel about that, though I guess in the 80s he was pretty much a joke so I guess it probably woulda sucked. The NZA
First one was an one of the most underrated overrated movies I've ever seen. wait, how does that work? RE2 - Crap! I hated it! That movie is a perfect example on how NOT to listen to the fans (that and Spidey 3... yeah. I said it). Fanboys fucked that movie up. alright, admittedly i never got around to seeing it, but how so? it didnt look like it was trying to follow the game any. also, pics of these tits or they did not happen.
