ugh, "The Other". still cant believe panch stands by that one.

wait, which big arc are you referring to with spidey on the x-men, though?

see, i guess they could be expanding the definition, but the reason im thinking is sales sales sales it could be some fallout from their current 2nd Coming arc, where mutants are still considered an endangered species. these characters could simply lend their strength for an arc in a way that establishes a team, a la the way Bendis had a mashup of New Avengers form for "Breakout" and then just decide to stick with it.

Actually, I've had some time to think on this and while I KNOW that sales are the prime reason for trying the non-mutant members angle, I think there's a valid philosophical story point that can be made out of this:

It's always disturbed me that the Mutants were the only ones actively fighting for mutant equality. Professor X pretended to be a human for a while, but that only makes the point more poignant: For years the greatest non mutant voice against mutant hate was a secret mutant.

I think to today's anologous problems and I see that gay rights activists in schools have tried to organize gay-straight alliances rather than exclusively gay groups.

I just read an article about a straight college wrestler who campaigns for gay rights by wearing a Human Rights Campaign sticker when he competes.

I say it's about time some non-mutant heroes showed some passion for the cause of mutant rights.

And like I said, that leads to some good story potential. And it fixes something that's always bothered me about Marvel's Universe where Captain America etc would sometimes make a pro-mutant-equality comment or two but never seemed to be working for it.

continuity-wise, that'd be really cool. they havent touched on that kinda thing since Grant Morrison made Mutant Town in NY and mutant culture started going mainstream, getting humans on board & such.

i remember digging it in Civil War when Cap wanted help fighting the registration and Cyclops & co basically asked "where were you years ago when they wanted just us?"

We're talking 80's-90's here. It was an old reference when I started reading comics. Until mutant numbers are bolstered a little more post-decimation, it makes sense for them to broaden the definition a little. Frankly I'm suprised one of the High Evolutionary's creatures aren't featured on the team. Those weird cunts were about the only good thing of Quicksilver's solo series. Damn that Lord Anon!

wait, those furries are cool now? last i saw of them was that awful Beast backstory a year or so when he was trying to "cure" their non-breeding problems, and they were awful.

then again, i entirely missed Quicksilver's solo book.

I can see Jumbie's angle, but if that's their goal then they certainly didn't bring in the A-listers. They picked New York's most infamous superhero (I swear, Jesus' fans were less backstabbing than Spider-Man's), a character that's only not a villain whenever Daredevil's fucking her, a bigger blacker more gutter mouthed blackspoitation hero than Luke Cage that also happens to be a vampire, and a half-Hulk/half-Feminazi Wonder Woman rip-off as their non-mutant representatives? Christ, The Dark Avengers had better PR than this.

The Hulk's children would be considered mutants, right? I suppose anyone who got their powers genetically from birth at this point. Except for shit like Thor. His kids would be mighty because of the Asgardian soulsperm aura or something.

I noticed most of these characters have either been in movies or TV shows. Psylocke is the only total wildcard. Just vidjagames for her. The other "public unknowns", Hulklady, Hope and Cable, are all one step removed from well known movie characters. I guess Jubilee has the retro appeal from the cartoon. God forbid she lose the yellow trenchcoat.

I find it odd that, after all the focus testing that clearly went into this, they went with Psylocke and Elektra. They both fill a similar role in The Marvel Method: Lucrative Team Building 101 ™. I bet they get catty with each other.

I speak this. One shall fall. Relatively quickly. Or maybe just Elektra every 8 months or so.

Frankly I'm suprised one of the High Evolutionary's creatures aren't featured on the team.

You're right, it is a shock. They need a berzerker beast man with rage that can scarcely be contained. Werewolf X-Treme would fit in that hole mighty nice if I do say so myself. He raises the overall extremeness of the team exponentially. Not to mention that he prefers to wear his baseball cap in a rebellious manner. Is that cap made with Shi'ar technology? 'Probly does something cool.

I had completely forgotten that the New Men/Knights of Wundurgore were in an episode of the X-Men cartoon. Until after I just wiki'd it. Fuzzy memories.

God I feel like an old man that's confused and just wants things back to normal.

How can you have an X-Men team without Wolverine? and where's Gambit, Beast, Cyclops, Rogue and Jean?(is she dead now or what, I don't even know if I care anymore) This is why I plan to just stick to self contained story's with an ending. I just don't have the patience for this anymore. :)

glad I'm not alone...

An Xmen team without Wolverine really has a better chance to develop as opposed to the bog standard formula of standing around not quite knowing how to proceed until Wolverine shows up and kills offending creature & bitches out Cyclops. And if there's no Cyclops to pose in front of, there's no Wolverine.

haha, ASC must've stopped reading when the cartoon was still going. "why is there 10 years of continuity from when i stopped reading a decade ago?!"
QUick, everybody hide the copies of Cat-beast, White Queen and X-23 before ASC has a heart attack.

I actually liked Cat-Beast, I stopped reading after Morrison's New X-Men. How long ago was that?

I was gonna suggest Logans gotta be the only person to dig catbeast just to be indie, but cue ASC with his White Stripes hate & love of Moore movie adaptions to redefine weird fucking tastes.

Beast's whole appeal for me is the mad scientist willing to mess with himself angle, so amphibious downs syndrome beast was easily my favourite.

i wanna say new x-men was at least 5 years back at this point? following its end, x-books mostly went to shit for me, thanks to Chuck Austen fucking up most of grant's work/leavings. around "Messiah Complex" when Hope (the last new mutant) was born, that's when it got good again: X-Factor's been solid almost the whole way through, but right now, im reading nearly every x-title to keep up with Second Coming. its the culmination of a number of x-crossovers, so hopefully it ends well or im dropping like half these titles.

speaking of... :2T: man, that was harsh.

id like to preface this by saying Second Coming, almost but not quite over yet, has been every bit as enjoyable an arc as Messiah Complex, and if it ends well, should be tradeworthy. the Hellbound stuff, not as much unless you're a weirdo that likes Illyana or something. that said...

weird arc has gotten weirder...unless you wanted X-Men: Inferno part 2?

they havent really known what to do with Gambit in years; last i checked, he was Death again, somehow.

this book is gonna be...something.

So Gambit's a vampire again? Like in Mutant X? I thought this might be a multiverse crossover thing at first like Avengers is doing with A-Next, but instead it just looks like a terrible idea. Oh well, there go my hopes of seeing The Brute and Bloodstorm again.

...anyone read # 1 yet? its...it could be something, too hard to tell from here...but it feels uneven following the climactic ending of Second Coming (which went down pretty cool, i thought - f

ew deaths/changes in the status quo, but hey, the gambit for Hope paid off - 5 new mutants were born!

). anyone wondering what went down with Jubilee (from the first images here) will promptly have answers... :D
