The NZA Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 ...and so we near the closing out of 2010, which i'm comfortable calling the return of real hip-hop. i try to avoid using semi-elitist talk like that, but there's been so much quality this year, it's amazing...even the mainstream saw some good efforts. possibly a leak off the mythic Detox, Eminem featuring Nas - "Topless", with Em clearly ghostwriting a verse for Dre. if you wanna hear it with T.I. instead, - Nas verse is, as always, solid.
Sitdown With DJ Premier & Pete Rock from DJPremierBlog on Vimeo.
this is prolly more a bookmark for me than anything, but the above is a 1 hour interview off the Pete Rock vs DJ Premier DVD that i gotta go find soon. finally, an alright track with a lotta talent kinda taking it easy: Eminem featuring Dr. Dre, Jay-Z & 50 Cent - Syllables Quote
Mr. Hakujin Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Listened tot he Brothers of Chico Dusty mash-up all the way through. Solid stuff. Thanks again for sharing. I don't understand why Drake is famous. I hope hemakes good on his VMA promise and checks out of his fifteen minutes ten minutes early. Couldn't DL the Jay/Em/Dre/50 song. . . . . . butt he one with Nas sounded pretty good. Heh. You're right, it does sound like a Slim Shady verse. Is the student now influencing the master, or, straight-up writing his rhymes? 1 Quote
Panch Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) Dude, Em's been writing for Dre since Chronic 2001. Dre's beats are what clearly made that CD an instant classic, but without Eminem there would be no Shady/Aftermathand everything that's come since. Including 50 and the new Detox. Think about it. If the Spartans hadn't stopped the Persians back in the day we'd all be Persians and shit. Eminem is the glue that holds that click together. Dre owes him all his current success. And obviously vice versa. Edited December 30, 2010 by Panch Quote
The NZA Posted December 30, 2010 Author Posted December 30, 2010 that's the weirdest goddamn analogy...but yeah, Em ghostwriting for Dre's nothing new, some argue it's just one of the more well-known instances of something that happens all the time. a current example is that Nicki Minaj fans have been going nuts @ her verse on "Monster" on Kanye's album, saying that she outshined Ye & Jay-Z both, but...ye wrote the verse (supposedly they took like nearly a week?), and jigga has again been on autopilot for a while. i'll try to find another link for Syllables, its not fantastic but its fun hearing them all together on some shit. glad you enjoyed the mashup. Quote
Panch Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Jay-Z is sometimes on autopilot and sometimes commanding the whole fleet. This is on both his shit and when he features. It's weird. Tupac and Biggie were never like that. Eminem and Nas neither. Even guys like Ludacris bring it everytime. I don't know how Jigga is considered the 'King' sometimes. I guess he makes the money to do so. Quote
The NZA Posted December 30, 2010 Author Posted December 30, 2010 true, i wouldn't argue with calling him top 10 but he's not as consistent as those dudes. when was the last time you think he really got into it? i still havent gotten through American Gangster soundtrack or Blueprint III, so you tell me...i was kinda meh about Kingdom Come, so i put his other stuff further back in my backlog. Quote
Panch Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Kingdom Come was crap. I think he knew that after it released and went nuts on American Gangster. It also carried over to Blueprint 3 which is comparable. I give Gangster the nod as the better overall album because of how different it was from Kingdom. I mean, he really brought it. Think Nas droppin' Stillmatic after all those iffy albums. Yeah, like that. Quote
Panch Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 i'll try to find another link for Syllables, its not fantastic but its fun hearing them all together on some shit. What the? Did we hear the same track? That shit is fiya! Could of done without the second stringers gettin' on at the end, but that track is hard! That Nas one is the one that needs work. Nas' verse is tight, but that's about it. Wasn't feelin' it. Quote
Mr. Hakujin Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 What, you don't like the genre of hip-hop being compared to "titties," Panch? The mind boggles. Anyway, glad to see you and nick are rounding out your genre icon bashing with Hova. First Stan, now Jay-Z. Who's next, Paul McCartney? Clint Eastwood? Ozzy Ozb--well, him I can understand... 1 Quote
Panch Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) I REALLY want to like a song with a name like 'Topless', trust me, but I'm just not feelin' it. Even with two of my top three favorite rappers on it, it ain't doin' nothin' for me. ALSO. HOTTEST SONG OF 2011. THAT'S IT: <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg3c-tt0Ycc?fs=1&hl=en_US"> Nick mentioned it in an earlier post, but peeps skipped over it. Not me. I've had time to soak this in and this joint is simultaneously the hottest song of 2010 AND 2011. Period. The final verse produced by Swizz Beatz is ridicitulous. I know Nick hates on Swizz, but the fucker is in with the elite producers: Dre, Tim, RZA and Kanye. PLUS the bastard impregnated Alisha Keys! If that don't gain your respect (or hate) nothing will. The NZA Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 Swizz makes money, but he's kinda played/doesn't vary his style much for my liking, im usually kinda disappointed when i see his name on shit. there's worse, no doubt, but there's tiers to producers (putting him up with RZA? cmon son!), but id personally put him there with the other clubbanger ones like trackmasters, maybe Timbaland, few others...and of that tier, he's the least consistent for me is all. dude can produce a hit, he's just hit or miss for me. he was on that time, though. it's a great track, i kept playing that and "all of the lights", even if some of the lyrics arent the best...production's just too good. Haku - you're so eager to white knight it for the richest guys out there, its funny. understand that if im saying jigga is a fair name to be top 10, but has been phoning it in, im saying he's a talented MC with a solid body of work under him, but hasn't (in my eyes) really put heart into it since the black album. that said, panch's words have me wanting to check out the american gangster album, cause id love to see effort again - there was a time when it was a big deal for Jay to get outshined on his own track (like Em did on Renegade), but now, it's not uncommon at all. still love the artist, just wish he'd show up sometimes - for what its worth, again, at least he's not been doing this for a decade like Snoop. Panch Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Swizz has done what few producers have never been able to... completely change his style. This is comparable to comic book artists that have a certain style for years and all of a sudden change and its like they're a new person. Finch, Pacheco come to mind. Swizz Beatz went from producing simplistic Ruff Rydas/DMX/Drag-On (who? Exactly) bullshit (and being at the top of his game then) to completely stepping his game up, changing his style and now producing commercial hits for Beyonce and thug shit for Jay-Z or whoever (muthafuckas can't even afford him now). The top ten MONEY MAKING singles of the last ten years probably belong to Timbaland, Kanye, The Neptunes, Will.I.Am and Swizz Beatz. RZA, while awesome and influential in his own right, doesn't even break the top 100! I'm not knockin' RZA. You know I love the guy, but I think you're letting biases blind you. Men lie. Women lie. The numbers don't. As far as all this Jay-Z talk goes, I agree with Nick... but only to a certain extent. Dude does dial it in sometimes, but the man is sick no doubt about it. You're missing out, Nick, by not listening to more Jigga. The guy's only misstep has been Kingdom Come. He makes classic albums everytime. You just got to sit down and pick out the club shit and radio joints. The man does make something for everyone on all his albums. The Black Album was a great example. American Gangster and Blueprint 3 are comparable shit. Don't sleep on 'em! Quote

The numbers don't. so you moved out of your condo, and into the bank vault? there's no way you can say mainstream/radio hip-hop is garbage based on talent/etc and then say producers are the best when they make the most $, that doesn't even make sense. I just said Swizz made money...so did Masta Ace, so does Lil Jon, what does have to do with being a good producer? Swizz went from boring shit that got slept on to clubbanger...i mean, great? we've got plenty of those, and dudes like Statik Selektah, darkchild, Pharell and others can get with this and still do other things. and you already know this! RZA did expanded what you could ask for from a producer: taking a megagroup, giving each an individual "sound" (and partly, style), and negotiating to get them top-paying contracts on various labels, while still being the first group to do that and force every contract to allow for group albums? any producer list he's not in the top 10 isn't serious; dude didn't just bank on wu, he's got soundtrack, movie, video game etc money coming in. that said: i'm only so much a RZA stan; his recent 8 diagrams/Wu wednesday work has lacked raw/grimyness, which i was happy to see at least back on that one track on Ye's album. anyway, im sayin that's an awful-ass way to rate a producer. Dilla prolly made 1/3 of the neptunes in his life, and id bet they'd trade a fair portion of the wealth to have 1/2 the legacy dude created. we still try to make songs like he did. @ Jay: i swear, im listening to them soon! you havent really steered me wrong yet, and again its not like i dont wanna hear Jay with some heart behind him. you're completely sleeping on Ghost's Apollo Kids, you need to come by just to hear that shit and let me make you a copy. Panch Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) All those RZA comments just words. I already know all this. RZA is on my top ten producers list every time... but so is Swizz Beatz. Dude makes awesome beats (don't mean I like the people on 'em... which is another indicator of good producing). I'm sure there's a lot of songs out there produced by him that you like that you don't know is produced by him. I'm willing to bet. As far a Ghostface... you gotta be in the mood. You can't just pick up his album and bang. Right now I'm on my 50 Cent shit. <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks07DTvThAA?fs=1&hl=en_US"> You posted this a couple pages back. Mr. Hakujin Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 ugh, speaking of pharrell. did you hear the latest NERD album? utter shyte. and as for RZA, the dude is past his prime. he's ruining his legacy w/ his senile rants. just put him out to pasture. you see what i did there. huh? huh? 1 Quote
The NZA Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 newjack lupe fans: the NZA is putting on a hip hop 101 clinic every thursday night, attendance is widely encouraged to keep from saying dumb shit online! see you there!! Panch - its possible id not pick up some of Swizzy's older shit, but let's say the last 5 years on? id be very surprised, man. that's what i mean by his style not being very versatile; its like Dre, you know when you're hearing him. you telling me you didn't know it was him on the opening notes of "Money in the bank", "Who's real", "Bring em out" etc? you could've been drunk out of your mind in a club and still caught that. he's not bad, and he can be on other dudes' top 10 lists, for sure...but as long as there's producers who can do all kindsa shit like Alchemist, 9th Wonder, even Madlib, he doesnt nearly fit mine. i gotta admit; wheezy prolly has my favorite line this month with "you niggas are gelatin, peanuts to an elephant/ I got through that sentence like a subject and a predicate" - his wordplay is so hit & miss for me, but i love shit like that right now, listening to: niggaz with latitude, its alright so far. speaking of swizzy, here's your boy (from in the day), jump to about 1:25 and get reminded how he's still got it! <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a78Um-KIhqQ?fs=1&hl=en_US"> also, id not heard this one before: Eminem - Difficult Quote
Panch Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 See thats what I'm taking bout right there. Thanks Nick. Swizz not versatile. That Busta joint is so street. Then dude can turn around and produce ladies anthem Single Ladies. Not versatile, pfft. But enough of this Swizz Beatz talk. More joint droppin! Quote
The NZA Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 that was the point; sounds like the shit he always makes, cause dude lacks versatility. if you like his style, its nice i guess? id rate Just Blaze, Storch, trackmasters and a lot in his league as better personally, but to each their own. if i was to do a top 10 producers: DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, RZA, Jay Dee, Hi-Tek, Kanye, Prince Paul, after that i get caught on tons of names between Madlib, Jam Master Jay, Dre, Alchemist, DJ Shadow, Muggs, Neptunes, Timbaland...to be honest, the more i think about it, again he aint bad but he's not even nearly top 25 for me. id be hard pressed to rank em, though - what's your list look like? <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00cr3g6wCG0?fs=1&hl=en_US"> Lamar's coming up, working with Dre on Detox, apparently. in case you guys didnt find Syllables, here's a new link: <param'>http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/e/16711680/wshhvLgbR3po07k26a23"> Quote
Panch Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 (edited) My list in no particular order: Dre, Kanye, Timbo, Neptunes, RZA, Swizz, Em, Primo, Alchemist, Will.I.Am, Hi-Tek, Storch, Just Blaze, White Boy. Maybe some others, but I can't think now. That Syylalable (think how they spell it) joint is great. Like I mentioned before, didn't need those second stringers at the end. Been trying to download 50's new supposed album Angels Never Die. Don't even know if that's the name or some mixtape shit. Nick you're more resourceful. Hook a Panchy up! Mr. Hakujin Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Shadow? Ah, okay. I suppose we should be grateful DoJ is at least attempting to pretend he has some interest in hip-hop and participate, but really I kinda feel like I wanna make him sit in the corner and wear this shirt... Quote
The NZA Posted January 2, 2011 Author Posted January 2, 2011 cold, hakus. cold. panch - i didn't mean to speak so harshly; its more swizzy indifference, honestly. and i admit, i totally have to look up Whtie Boy, doesn't ring a bell despite the fact i might've heard some of dude's work (this happened to me with Bangladesh too, totally didn't know that was him on the Lil Wayne tracks, and for being of a style i don't normally dig, he's an exception, hard not to like him. is that the name of 50's new one? ill find it for you, but do you want it streaming online or you just want a torrent/download of the album itself? gotta go look that one up. @ Storch - i read this sad-ass article in the herald a month or two back where his mom & grandad were living in some small place like off brickell or the like, and she was talking about how she'd been waiting for her son to take care of her like jay/diddy/etc did, but that she saw him blow his cash on dumb shit like buying the bar out and supposedly tons of cash on stones to impress kim kerdashian (fuck, i hope he hit that for all his work), you ever hear about this? wiki says he went from being one of the top paid producers to bankrupt, kinda sad to see, DoJ - i namedropped DJ Shadow on my list, but the reason haku's busting your balls and panch (rightfully) didn't mention dude at all is that if we're being fair, he's trip-hop which kinda falls outside of this, is all. i adore his style of sampling & am still going through his discography, though. its kinda why id fucking love to drop Jun Ceba (Nujabes) high on my list but we're not really talking jazz-rap or other experimental subgenres here. Quote
the division of joy Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I want that shirt While you've a point on shadow being more a sub-genre of hip hop than hip hop itself, it still all falls under the one big category of hip hop in my eyes, hence my love and addition of the chap. His work with UNKLE and Roots Manuva only furthering my opinion of the guy. And Panch I'm unfamiliar with Swizz Beats. Quote
