Mr. Hakujin
I want that shirt While you've a point on shadow being more a sub-genre of hip hop than hip hop itself, it still all falls under the one big category of hip hop in my eyes, hence my love and addition of the chap. His work with UNKLE and Roots Manuva only furthering my opinion of the guy. And Panch I'm unfamiliar with Swizz Beats. This pretty much sums up my previous point, Donny DoJ. And Swizz Beats also put his seed in Alicia Keys. You know her, right? She did that song about New York with that "rap guy" NZA feels is phoning in his rhymes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjsXo9l6I8 *edit* OK, that last post w/ Celph Titled puts you on the long road to redemption, Donny DoJ. I dig the Stones sample. Edited January 2, 2011 by Mr. Hakujin
the division of joy
I don't claim to be the oracle of hip hop and knowing all about it. Someone with a bit of sense might have summed up that from some of the stuff I've posted in here, I don't particularly like mainstream stuff (BOO ME, THROW ROCKS AT ME FOR BEING SO GOD DAMN HIP AND CONTRARY) and what not. But yeah, I know the alicia keys song you're on about, but I'll be damned if I liked it enough to find out who produced it or any of her other stuff. Mr. Hakujin
I'm not a musicphile hardcore like that either, DoJ. But NZA & Panch rightly put emphasis on producers when speaking about hip-hop. To use a clumsy rock analogy, hip-hop producers are "the band" to the rapper's "lead singer/lyricist."
the division of joy
That is fair enough, but like I said, I didn't hear the alicia keys song in question and want to know who produced it. It is rare that I hear stuff and do think that. Last person I did got posted up in here by me a page or two ago, before all this cock stroking happened. The NZA
i bet hakus thinks snoop is just as good as his doggystyle/doggfather days. and fuck, i knew idve heard some of white boy's shit! DoJ - don't get me wrong; i totally get your emphasis on lyrics - i often would fuss/remind LL & sen to listen to the words if the song/artist is a lyrical one whilst adjusting my monocle, as i tend to agree with 2Pac that when all people wanna hear is banging beats and not saying a thing, there's trouble - but there's room for both, thankfully. good production shoulnd't overpower a track (unless it's meant to be bass-heavy or the like, think clubs, car shows, strip joint material etc), but it can really affect the flow/feel of the song. sometimes its lacking and the artists' work (and often, revenue) hurts from it, sometimes its just mismatched, but when its on? you get the kind of synchronicity (sp?)/blend that really makes a classic. i used to really dig some of Talib Kweli's older albums, but his tracks that weren't done by Hi-Tek or others in that league were usually pretty awful/mismatched and painful to listen to, even if the content was alright. other stuff like The Clips is good/enjoyable but the production takes it up a few notches, for me. i tend to think of myself as a lyrics guy too, but you can't really divorce them, and i kinda think panch might agree that its like our comic artist/writer debates: you can favor one over the other, but without them being on the same page, everybody loses. i cant really fault chris' analogy, either. anyway, like panch said, on with the tracks! who wants to hear a half-decent white chick spit? <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze-S5Wz0iTc?fs=1&hl=en_US"> oh, also: we should do more hip-hop quotables in this thread! ill still run with that wheezy line for now, but my backup lyric comes from none other than lil b aka BASED GOD: Hoes suck my dick cause I laugh when they shopping/ Young Based God gives a fuck about your problems seriously, youtube this kid, his shit is golden. SWAG SWAG PRETTY BOY SWAG ...ok, on some serious shit: that's Phonte & Big Pooh, who with producer extraordinaire 9th Wonder = Little Brother. if i havent already, ill post some of their shit up later...tons of talent here, im still hearing all the work they put out the last decade or so. Ive been enjoying Phonte's work on The Foreign Exchange, but that's kinda indie, wanted to make a thread or something for it later on, haku & others might dig it as well. anyway, here's to 2011! *edit: here's a sample of 9th Wonder when he was on: <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V2M0cNug5Y?fs=1&hl=en_US">

Panch
I liked that Kanye joint. Have you noticed more and more people are making 'sequels' to their albums? Only ones to be successful, as far as I can tell, are Jay-Z and (to a lesser extent) Lil Wayne. Weird.
Mr. Hakujin
I liked that Kanye joint. Have you noticed more and more people are making 'sequels' to their albums? Only ones to be successful, as far as I can tell, are Jay-Z and (to a lesser extent) Lil Wayne. Weird. I could be wrong, and some hip-hop-historian can come in here and correct me if so, but I think Hova kinda started "sequels" off w/ BP2 and Weezy followed suit w/ That Carter II. The motive seems to be that in between so-so selling albums or all out flops you release a "sequel" to generate hype. I noticed this especially w/ Weezy's Tha Carter III, every time I've read an article about his new album or his release from jail it's always "the much anticipated sequel" that gets mentioned. I'm not so sure if all people can talk about when your new joint drops is when the NEXT one is gonna hit. Just sayin'.
Panch
You're right on the money. Jay-Z did start that trend. Weezy just jumped on it the quickest and its worked for him. It doesn't hurt that they're two of the hottest in the game right now. I guess its why folks are biting their style, huh?
The NZA
what's really funny is jigga's first BP was already a sequel Jay and captain save-a-song Wayne are both looking at it from a business perpective, so yeah, seeing how much better movies/games/etc tend to do with sequels, it makes sense...i like it better when they switch up the album covers a bit, though (unlike say what the Game does with his, haha). i wanna say not everyone's biting their style...but i forget the name of the flow wayne fucks with sometimes, its the one Drake was wrecking and Minaj's album absolutely destroyed, where you play a retarded game of word association like "i'm a baller...lebron" or "ill crush you...godzilla", ugh i hope that shit stops with just their camp, its only halfway clever when you dont constantly use it for lack of a rhyme book or something. what do you guys think? meantime, another one by XV, who i put up yesterday: <param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUy_kv-wE8E?fs=1&hl=en_US"> ps Ja Rule getting clowned last month on twitter
The NZA
GAF-Hop delivers again Kanye West & Jay-Z present: Watch The Throne I paid for those titties, get your own / It ain't safe in the city, Watch The Throne The collabo album from Kanye West and Jay-Z, following in the footsteps of Best of Both Worlds and Collision Course. Coming this year. Get HYPE. Why you should care: Great tracks like , , Power Remix and The Joy were initially meant to be on the Album before Kanye yanked em (The Joy still is in, according to Pete Rock) Great songs (song?) have leaked so far, such as “It’s like one of those Blueprint, College Dropout, change-the-face-of-music type good.” - Jay-Z Jay-Z and Kanye are doing a collaboration album goddamnit what more do you want What we know: They've already recorded enough tracks to complete the album, in England and Australia (Part of the recording done in Peter Gabriel's studio. Pictured below. There's supposed to be a wide host of producers It is a full length, retail album Rumour has it, that it has a “self-empowerment, black-male-empowerment vibe.” Every time you mention the Illuminati in this thread, someone who looks like a camel dies. First single set to drop January 11th, or as early as this Friday, entitled H.A.M., verified by Kanye, a week ago. Tentative Release Date: March 1st
Panch
Fuck man, every Jay-Z album that's come out in 2000s has been a collaboration album with Kanye! Let me guess... the other producers are gonna be Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. I ain't hatin' (God knows this'll be an awesome album), but this is kinda low on Jigga's part. Capitalizing on Ye's hotness right now. I call bullshit on this.
The NZA
hahaha...yeah, its true. this is more "ima rhyme with ye, over his beats" vs years of "ima rhyme over ye's beats". could be cool, but if its like Collision Course, im expecting a lot of fan favorites + 1-2 new tracks...we'll see how it turns out, the blueprint + college dropout thing did get me excited though. and oh yeah - it took a colab with Linkin Park to get some hondonians to hear jigga, so this is sure to catch those wily taylor swift fans, or something. paging hakus to tell the semi-haters why this isn't an obvious cash-in
Panch
It sounds fucking amazing, but this is exactly that: a cash-in. Funka Detox... Mr. Hakujin
Jay & Ye are really gonna release a colab album this soon after their own two albums? You'd think they would at least wait until 2012. To me, this release hot on the heels of BP3 and MBDTF smells of them priming for an overpriced tour. Not that I'm knocking that--hip hop tours are notoriously full of fail. They can do whatever they gotta do to make their next million. Tour or not, I can't wait to DL this album. And here;s hoping Mike Shinoda produces a track or contributes a verse on this colab album. Collision Course rules, you elitist d-bags! ....i wanna say not everyone's biting their style...but i forget the name of the flow wayne fucks with sometimes, its the one Drake was wrecking and Minaj's album absolutely destroyed, where you play a retarded game of word association like "i'm a baller...lebron" or "ill crush you...godzilla", ugh i hope that shit stops with just their camp, its only halfway clever when you dont constantly use it for lack of a rhyme book or something. what do you guys think?.... oh, you mean like when Kanye went: "You pop the trunk. The NZA
yeah, just like that. it can work, but when its half your song, it sounds like a gimmicky freestyle, to me. oh yeah, you're prolly right, huge tour prolly coming outta this - i forget, collision course did, didn't it? and if Rock the Bells comes back to miami, ill show you a hip-hop show that goes against your words (ive been to a few weak shows too, granted). i remember paying like $50-60 for tribe called quest, wu-tang, nas, blackstar (mos/talib), pharcyde, de la soul, immortal technique and tons of others. the only shitty thing was that the cali show had the roots & mf doom, ny show had public enemy and rage. still, the lineups are amazing, and most of them put on a great show despite being stoned off their balls (meth & red seem to get more hyped then anyway). And here;s hoping Mike Shinoda produces a track or contributes a verse on this colab album. Collision Course rules, you elitist d-bags! The NZA
ah, i couldn't recall if you were a fan or not - on another board, there's an honest debate between illmatic and it was written...the latter's said (by some, MAD CONTROVERSIAL ) to have a more evolve story, but listen to the track you just linked to there, he's already doubling down on rhymes per bar: rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin, musician, inflictin composition/ ... n*ggas be runnin through the block shootin,/time to start the revolution catch a body head for houston once they caught us off guard/, the Mac-10 was in the grass, and I ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin/ ... havin dreams that I'm a gangster/ drinkin moets, holdin tecs makin sure the cash came correct, then I stepped/ investments in stocks, sewein up the blocks to sell rocks, winnin gunfights with mega cops/ but just a n*gga, walking with his finger on the trigger make enough figures until my pockets get bigger/ I ain't the type of brother made for you to start testin gimme a smith & wesson, i'll have n*ggas undressin/ i mean, that entire album is laced with quotables. his flow was just so advanced, i mean...i dont know nearly enough to do so, but if i had to teach a hip-hop history class, content like this would be the clear division between old school and what i consider to be hip-hop's golden era. a mutual friend of panch & i (and fellow hondonian, somewhat) DJ Ario X always goes on about how poorly some of the true old school stuff ages: i can still enjoy them, but Kool Moe Dee, Grand Master Flash, etc - unless its more iconic like say Run DMC, LL stuff, etc - doesnt hold up as well due to the various styles sounding dated/simple, even though they very much weren't at the time. there's standout artists like Slick Rick that sounded years ahead of their time, but not too many, and Illmatic stands out as an album with no real misses (or "famous guest appearances") that raised the bar on lyrical complexity, storytelling, and production (pete rock, primo, large professor & q-tip all somehow putting some of their best work down on a short album). top 5 of all time, on my list. other dudes could tell stories effectively, no doubt, but for my money, nobody could do so & flow nearly as nice/naturally until Ready to Die...and that includes the next 3 of nas' albums. what do you think, panch/err'body else? if i had a dollar for every mainstream/underground artist that's quoted "i never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death", i could save this economy, real talk
