Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception features the return of famed fortune hunter Nathan Drake and follows him through a gripping, action-packed storyline that will take you all over the world. In his search for the fabled “Atlantis of the Sands,” Nathan Drake and longtime friend and mentor Victor Sullivan set off on a daring trek into the heart of the Arabian Desert. But when terrible secrets of this lost city are uncovered, their journey becomes a desperate bid for survival that will force Drake to confront his deepest fears.

Throughout UNCHARTED 3, you’ll be taken to spectacular new locations around the globe that will showcase all of the work we’ve taken on to take acclaimed physics, particle and visual effects to a new level.

The story focuses on the hero’s relationship with his mentor and father figure, fan fave Victor “Sully” Sullivan, and has him searching for a legendary lost city that will ultimately take him to the Arabian Peninsula and the vast wasteland of the Rub’ al Khali Desert, also known as the Empty Quarter. (Said legendary lost city has been known by various names, including “Iram of the Pillars” and the “Atlantis of the Sands”; click the link for more backstory.)

. The inspiration for the story, says Hennig, came from Naughty Dog’s desire to take on the challenge of conceiving and building out gameplay scenarios within a desert locale — “challenge,” because organic elements like water, fire and sand are technically difficult to credibly render with animation. Says Hennig: “When we first came up with the idea of sand, you see everyone’s eyes light up here and go, ‘Yeah, that’s going to be really hard — let’s do it!’” Adds Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells: “We’re a bunch of nerds. We just look forsomething that will be a technical, artistic challenge, and allowed us to push into an area of the world and history we’ve never tapped into before.”

The execs at Naughty Dog walked us through one of the game’s levels, and while we can’t tell you anything about the locale (it actually wasn’t the desert), we can tell you that it was quintessential Uncharted, marked by dynamic camera work and gameplay that requires you to jump and climb through treacherous spaces that are in an almost constant state of change — or in this case, catastrophic collapse. Innovations? Several, including enhanced backward climbing and the ability to fight multiple baddies at once.

"It's still up in the air how much gameplay we're going to let you wander around," he teased. "It will probably feel more open than the other games have. For sure.

"But we're never going to let you just ride a thousand miles off into the middle of nowhere. Ultimately the feel we want to get is, yeah, you're lost in the desert. So it needs to feel like that. But it's not going to feel open-world."

...

"When we said 'desert' the first thing all the game designers said was, 'Well, crap. How are we going to rein you in?' Richmond said.

"We sent guys to the desert and looked at desert reference and realised that the desert actually does have some natural barriers. There are dunes that are impossible to climb. We sent a couple of our art guys out there and they were trying to climb these dunes and the sand was just sliding. We get away with some of that kind of stuff.

"But at some point we have to do something. And I don't want to say what we did because I think we came up with a really cool solution. But we try not to kill you."

You too can half-tuck like Nathan Drake this year with the official Uncharted belt buckle, one of a many fine prizes included in the collector's edition of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, revealed today by Sony and Naughty Dog.

While Drake's mystical belt buckle may be most interesting to someone like me, you may be more interested in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception's other collectible offerings, like the "full size replica of Drake's necklace which includes Sir Francis Drake's ring" and an exclusive statue of Drake from Sideshow Collectibles.

All these collectible artifacts come in a handsome Traveling Chest replica. It even comes with the video game, stuffed inside a Steelbook case.

anyone else played the multiplayer beta? took me a while to find a game, oddly (must be the serves im on), played a co-op game today and it was fun, looked good but i had a hard time telling some enemies from the background, though. it's a solid system, i just dont see myself playing multi much, same as 2.

had an extra code for said multi, but im assuming most of you who were inclined grabbed it with the free month of PSN+, or gameshared it form my account or the like.

Played a bit of it the other day myself and liked it. I never play much multiplayer in any game, but when I do I find myself getting snagged in for a good couple of hours. I wanna try out some of the more intense stuff they showed in the trailers with team matches and other modes.

When I bought my ps3 best buy gave me all 3 of these games for free. But for the life of me I can't keep interested... I really don't know how to appreciate this series.

Either that or I could care less for games where your control of the progress of the game is a bit too linear. That is unless you're a final fantasy.
