Next gen expectations

The WU looks like it might be pushed back closer to holiday 2012, which i'm fine with, since it likely needs more time in the oven & Iwata talking about a strong launch lineup would be amazing, since i didnt see that by anyone this gen. Rumors currently have the Nextbox/720 debuting at E3 next year (presumably dropping in 2013, if following our usual timeline) and peg the PS4 for 2014. at 7-8 years or so, id say it'dve been a fine length for our current gen, and again with rising development costs and all the studios we've tragically seen close their doors, i imagine the industry could use the breather.

For what it's worth, speculation leans towards only an incremental jump, graphically/horsepower wise - though playing on PC these days shows me just how much better things could be with more than half a gig of RAM and a competent GPU. My hopes are that if Nintendo remains underpowered again for the next go around, they find a happy medium for middleware, a much-needed chunk of the industry that's been troubled with new handhelds.

still, here's what Epic showed off with "Samaritan", their real-time demo for their wishes from next-gen games.

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgS67BwPfFY?version=3&feature=player_embedded"><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgS67BwPfFY?version=3&feature=player_embedded"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgS67BwPfFY?version=3&feature=player_embedded" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

impressive, no? lotta stuff going on at the same time, and just like when they debuted Gears of War, all kinds've dynamic lighting to make it work. While i'm a bit more wary of bleeding-edge tech and the prices it brings, it'd be great to see something play like that on consoles, but i'm not holding my breath. Perhaps towards the end of its cycle? I kind've imagine itll be like most gens where you go halfway through launch year before something shows up that showcases a generational leap (for 360, i wanna say Dead Rising and Gears; PS3 kinda chugged along for me until Uncharted).

i think we should all do a few predictions, to point & laugh at potentially a few years from now, or call ourselves prophets and shit. ill do the easy ones first.

1) I can't see PSN being free online game play anymore. god, i hope i'm wrong.

2) the next MS system will be built like a fucking tank.

3) i've got $50 on a bet with Yahven that sony debuts a SKU for < $400. i stand by this.

where do you see it going?

Holy shit that was almost a spittake. +1'd.

On topic: I expect if I do a launch line for the next iteration I'll have to borrow someone's child or wear hair gel and a muscle shirt or something...

I had half an idea for a localised version of Kinekt sitting in front of your hands to recognise gesture instead of a button controller. It'd still cost like a controller, pair to a main unit in the same way but would function with a new lexicon of what would become universal gestures. Effectively the new ABXY, WASD or mouse.

With 3D integration getting more common I'll wager Nintendo will be the first to take another stab at VR, surely with how kinekt maps movement and information being sent to a specialised headpiece, we can't be far away from a credible VR unit this gen?

man, only Jax's wish seems plausible.

i know Kinect sold great at first, but it had some good marketing behind it - it's still really limited in what genres it can handle, and i think that shows. I honestly dont think AAA titles are going back to PC, but i really like where PC is at right now (huge indie scene, few big titles like Witcher 2 start out there, etc - if more ports are optimized id be pretty happy), but Axels - yeah, $ is gonna make us all weep, but anyone wanna throw out a ballpark of launch costs? id be really surprised to see anyone launch at above $400, even if the economy magically fixes itself right up by 2013/14. what i do expect is more accessory costs - if sony can't charge for memory on consoles anymore due to hard drives, i guess im wondering who'll still not include HDMI cables, or really innovate & make the first controller or AC adapter or some shit a separate purchase, heh.

I see consoles integrating themselves as more of an entertainment center than just a thing that plays video games. Basically think of it as a specialized computer designed primarily with games in mind, but does other stuff as well. Internet/Facebook/Twitter stuff like that will all be integrated into the start up screen. Kinda what Sony is doing now, but only much more so. Of course there will be the obligatory graphics and cpu upgrades, but I see them as starting to be more like a computer and less like a "console."

Maybe they will finally make it so I can use a motherfucking mouse and keyboard to play a game!!! Then all them CoD bitches will see what's up.

I think Mort's definitely on to something. We're going to see devices marketed as living room entertainment hubs in addition to gaming devices, possibly with additional marketing attached (Microsoft and Google present, etc).

I wouldn't be surprised to see some DVR capabilities and access to an App store.

And this will cause a backlash and the gen after next we'll see something marketed as "A pure gaming device, for gamers" or something.

i'm saying most of that has happened (original xbox had a great media center setup, PS3 & 360 are all about codecs, netflix and the like - even cable packages coming). the gamecube was my answer to that last gen. android's coming to Vita, i dont doubt those games hitting PSN for PS3 later. DVR/tivo is so inevitable.

there's industry speculation on what if Apple dropped a small box of some kind to play iOS games on a big screen, but a) they already did that with iPad beaming to apple TVs wirelessly, and b) there's zero reason for them to invest in the console market. but yeah, i wasn't mocking Mortiis at all, i was saying i talked shit to Yahven when he said that stuff a decade ago, and he was largely on the money, he just missed the part where MS pushed PC ports changing to console first due to microsoft shitting on the PC industry, a move he'd prolly approve of after selling out glorious master race :2T:

I mean like when you start up the 720 it'll pop u with their advertisement, plus you'll have like a little sidebar showing you your emails, and facebooks messages, twitter messages, or any number of customizable features you select. Digital streaming of movies and games will become even more prevelant, so I think that is going to be a bigger focus as time goes on, as you'll see the industry move away from having actual media in stores (ie dvd's/discs etc).

As for the iPad, I think that computers themselves will go that route. Well at least laptops. There will always be that core of hardcore pc/desktop users that will want big giant machines with lots of parts and cables, but for the masses, I think eventually the laptop will turn into the ipad, just faster/better in every way.

Looking down gun sights? In my first-person shooter?

It's more common than you think the most stupidly obvious thing about it. Resistance 3 is the Half-Life 3 it seems we're never going to get and Dead Island is just Oblivion all gussied up and whored out as a survival horror game, you don't even see a gun: let alone look down the sights of one until 20 hours in.

But I do agree with that stance on Call of the Ghost Ops Medal of Duty Recon 7: Modern Black Honor Warfare.

You think so? I'm thinking maaaaaybe for Nintendo (they're too confident ), but the other two have to be scared shitless of hardware failure at this point. I mean, they both pretty much fixed the problems already with redesigns, I would hope they wouldn't take a steo back.

…y'know what though? You're probably right. Even if it defies reasoning.

The PS360 redesigns still uses some of the same hardware but tends to use less power and doesn't pump out so much heat.

The problem is that your looking at new hardware inside a small case. As long as Sony and MS don't try to make another graphically/horsepower machine then maybe both systems would last for more then a year or so before blowing up.

Faulty Hardware

:lush: This guy. The bitter, gin-soaked divorcee of the gaming set. He'll sit there and pound shots while wistfully telling how he wished he'd seen the warning signs earlier or never bought that fucking dog 360, and maybe once every couple of years a repairman or a casual encounter by the name of Nathan Drake will come along and make him believe in love again.

to be fair, he's not singling out the massive 360 fails (which from what ive seen anecdotally, the slims took care of): lots of places online plus poor axels make he & i both feel like our fatty PS3s are ticking timebombs. that's before you take into account systems bricked by forced firmware updates - i dont think there's a tremendous amount of them, but the fact that it happens at all is shit. the dude likes playing offline and he's not always allowed to do that, so i kinda get that particular bitterness.

i guess nintendo could slip up on the hardware, but i see it kinda doubtful - they go for custom chips & such and when you look at the GC (and when its duct-taped together, natch) the design is solid for passing heat, i think they're good for hardware - the wii failures i recall had to do with some dumb shit though, like small (heat related?) issues from leaving wiiconnect24 on alla time. they went & fucked up the 3DS hinges apparently, so there's that - but the fact that they're going back to the drawing board with the WU makes me hopeful they won't fuck it up design-wise...i guess we'll see about spec-wise. still, of the 3 they havnet had hardware take a shit on me since blue-screening NES, i wanna say?

like logans, id be shocked if sony or MS had faulty hardware at launch, but anything's possible. another thing i expect from them both? locked-down firmware/drives and online security for purchasing. MS lost billions on faulty hardware, but didnt some estimates say sony lost potentially hundreds of millions on the hack alone? this gen got kinda messy.

Waa Waa Waa! Who didn't get fucked over at some point this gen? Oh I know! ME!!

Everyone needs to quit bitching and just accept that you can't overcome the masses who don't give two fucks whether their parents have to buy them a new 360 cause it red-ringed. Live with it, or get a PC and all the shitty ports we get now a days....BF3 doesnt even have fucking advanced options for Video!!! WTMFFMFMFPOS!!

It'll be nice when I can turn on AAx8 and SSAO on my next console though!
