The New York Press is a tiny, alternative paper that has a lot of weird shit in it; he's not exactly hurting anyone's box office. He's also actually really well versed in films. It wouldn't be as fun if it was just some bro dude laying into our favorite Pixar movies. He also writes a fair amount for criterion, and that stuff is good, and free of any ridiculousness. I went to see it with my fourteen year old cousin and for once I was getting just as excited as him. Near shat myself when they engaged the "elbow rocket". I also need a gif of Idris Elbas reaction to getting his arm grabbed. I think The Wire fans just saw Stringer Bell about to kill a motherfucker for a split second. Overall, the movie took in $53 million this weekend, and its overseas total is now just over $200 million. With Spain, Brazil and (most notably) Japan opening Friday, Pacific Rim should have no problem getting to $300 million by the end of its run. I'm glad it's doing so well overseas b/c I hope it gets a sequel/prequel. I mean, we all wanna see Idris Elba kick some ass in his original Jaeger, right? Right. If not for him, I would be dismissing this as the Battleship of Summer 2013. Honestly, this could very well be like Transformers, but good. I really can't comprehend why this is so revered and Transformers is so reviled. The human characters are no more defined, are as secondary to the plot, which is itself secondary to the mindless action and the action is not exactly groundbreaking or original. They wasted Clifton Collins Jr. but a lot of movies do that and the world building was top notch and gave the movie a good deal of depth it would otherwise lack. Also giant mech movies are pretty generally outright awful so it gets a few handicap points for that. That said, the whole "seeding a sequel" idea makes me cringe. Movies work better when they're self contained or like, say, Lord of the Rings, parts of one big movie. If Del Toro has a straight plan for these two movies that he will execute and isn't just flying by the seat of his pants then, sure, I begrudgingly accept, but I still don't like it. That makes more sense, I never watched much Godzilla growing up, just the crappy 1998 Hollywood version. I also haven't watched any Mecha anime. I had also just watched Pan's Labyrinth for the first time before seeing this. As I said though, if a movie is a lot of fun, I'll give it a pass for poor story/charcaters. I agree that the Asian girl's backstory worked and was the only part of the movie that interested me. I'd have loved for the movie to focus on her.
