Mortiis558
Here's to hoping it is good...goddamn near 3 hours...and for those who like to read here (lol reading? what??) there is a book this is based off of.
Thelogan
Cloud Atlas has been on my list for a minute now. That one looks incredibly badass to me. I'm a big fan of Tom Tykwer though, so I was kind of biased before I even saw a trailer. And, by the looks of it, 3 hours is really going to be cramming it in. It could have probably used a couple more.
Mr. Hakujin
A lot of talk about this was going on in the new trailers thread, and w/ it coming out next week I figured it needed its own thread. Panch
Looks cool and extremely confusing. Will check out with the hopes it's Inception-esque.
Reverend Jax
I have a feeling this movie and Life of Pi will be rivals for the most visually-incredible-artsy-use-of-special-effects movie this fall.
The NZA
they're also related in that the trailer for both didnt tell me things like what genre they were, what they're about, etc
Thrizzle
Cloud Atlas is about things Tom Tykwer likes and Life of Pi has a big kitty cat. What else do you need to know?

Mortiis558
Just go read the wiki for plot for the book for Cloud Atlas...I am just trying to decide if I should read it before I get Tom Hanks and what's her name in my head as the faces of the characters... TulipO
This is possibly the best movie I have ever seen. Wow. Even at 3 hours I didn't want it to end--and we contemplated going to grab some dinner and catching the late show after. Seriously, awesome artistic direction, the plot was moving without being manipulative, every detail mattered. It was like every film genre in one movie. I have never seen anything so complex so brilliantly executed. A-MA-ZING!
Mr. Hakujin
^^Daaaaamn! A bunch of use were supposed to go Friday night, but we opted for Oktoberfest instead. The right call was ultimately made, but now I'm going to have to wait another week or go see it alone, but this definitely sounds like the kind of film you want to discuss immediately afterwards. Mortiis558
Wife and I are going to go see this in a few hours from now. A couple of people on my facebook page have been saying wonderful things about this, plus what you guys have been saying makes me look forward to it enough to get past having to be out in public and having to interact with society and such. That and I got some damn good smoke from the most outrageous of places so, yeah, baked I will be. Helps with the people thing.
TulipO
I can't wait to go see it again. I would go tonight if it weren't for this stupid hurricane!
TulipO
Seriously I just watched the trailer and got all misty eyed.

Mortiis558
So it wasn't what I thought. Without discussing it or leaking any spoilers I will just say this. It did not feel like 3 hours. I have been to movies where after 30 min I am dying to go smoke a cig, and for this one, none of that. That being said I would love to see something further with just Sun Mee 451 and the "far future" place that "worshipped her" (no spoilers in that). I know they pretty much covered everything, but it would have been great to see how Sun Mee affected her own time. I know that wasn't the point, so don't call me on that, I get it... But all in all I enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind a 6 hour directors cut honestly, and thankfully there is a book where I should hopefully get a more in-depth look at everyone and everything. Wasn't the groundbreaking, visual spectacle I was expecting, but it ended up being much more.
TulipO
I'm reading the book now. Also going to see it again Friday night. SO. AWESOME.
Mr. Hakujin
It's killing me every time I see this thread pop up in "new topics." I'm not reading any more posts until after I see it on Saturday.

Keth
So no one is gonna mention how bad this bombed at the box office? Oh ok I'll do it then. Dickishness aside I do want to see this. I don't really want to spend movie theater money on it, but I might have to cause I doubt I'll sit in one spot long enough without turning on Steam to pay attention sufficiently if I rent it. Thrizzle
This seems like the kind of movie I wait for, I'm definitely blowing theater money on it once I have it to blow. But yeah, not surprised it bombed. It clearly isn't for mass consumption.
Reverend Jax
Word of mouth may carry into it having some staying power in its second week, if theaters don't drop it en masse. Also, if it gets a bunch of Oscar nominations, especially for Best Picture, it's come back into theaters in 2013.
TulipO
I'm going to see it again tonight. Maybe that will help... Also, it is definitely the kind of movie you see twice. Its so mesmerizing that I think you definitely miss some things the first time.
Mr. Hakujin
So it wasn't what I thought. Without discussing it or leaking any spoilers I will just say this. It did not feel like 3 hours. . . But all in all I enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind a 6 hour directors cut honestly. . . This. I enjoyed it but I was the teensiest bit disappointed. From the extended trailer I really was expecting something more to be revealed from seeing the film in its entirety, but honestly the trailer pretty much sums up everything. I can see why Tulip is gushing over it as a big BSG fan. The film was a technical winner with editing and cinematography (make-up was hit or miss for me though) and it masterfully blended most of the major genres of cinema (comedy, drama/romance, mystery, and sci-fi/action) into one film. However, for me Cloud Atlas lost some of its grandeur b/c BSG did something very similar over the course of four seasons. I'm glad I saw it in the theater as it's a film shot with such scope. I also agree w/ Mortiss in that the Neo Seoul story was the one I clamored for more of. And Halle Berry really shined in the 70s sequence. Hanks did his best work as Zachry in the "after the fall" sequence. Edited November 4, 2012 by Mr. Hakujin
Reverend Jax
Haven't seen it yet, but I did just watch an episode of The Colbert Report where it was promoted that made me laugh out loud more than just a few times. <table style='font:11px arial; color:#333; background-color:#f5f5f5' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='512' height='340'><tbody><tr style='background-color:#e5e5e5' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.colbertnation.com'>The Colbert Report</a></td><td style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; text-align:right; font-weight:bold;'>Mon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c</td></tr><tr style='height:14px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;' colspan='2'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/420595/october-25-2012/stephen-ghoulbert-s-spooky-time-halloween-fun-guide---tom-hanks'>Stephen Ghoulbert's Spooky-Time Halloween Fun Guide - Tom Hanks</a></td></tr><tr style='height:14px; background-color:#353535' valign='middle'><td colspan='2' style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; width:512px; overflow:hidden; text-align:right'><a target='_blank' style='color:#96deff; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.colbertnation.com/'>www.colbertnation.com</a></td></tr><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><embed style='display:block' src='http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:420595' width='512' height='288' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='window' allowFullscreen='true' flashvars='autoPlay=false' allowscriptaccess='always' allownetworking='all' bgcolor='#000000'></embed></td></tr><tr style='height:18px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><table style='margin:0px; text-align:center' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='100%' height='100%'><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.colbertnation.com/full-episodes/'>Colbert Report Full Episodes</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.indecisionforever.com/'>Political Humor & Satire Blog</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.colbertnation.com/video'>Video Archive</a></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table>
