Rumor: Morris Chestnut being considered to star in a Marvel BLACK PANTHER film

While most of Marvel Studio's Phase Two plans involve sequels - namely Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier - it already looks as though Phase Three will be a time dedicated to introducing some new superheroes to the world. After years of waiting it's been confirmed that Edgar Wright's Ant-Man will finally be arriving on November 6, 2015 and studio president Kevin Feige has confirmed that Doctor Strange will finally make his debut as well, but what other superheroes could be ready to hit the silver screen?

Well, Black Panther certainly seems like a solid candidate. We've been hearing talks about a movie based around the Wakandan king for years now, and while Feige has long played up the possibility nothing has ever been made official. Now, however, it seems as though a potential star may have just spilled the beans. Spotted by Latino-Review, actor Morris Chestnut recently left a post on his official Facebook page featuring the cover art seen below and the message "It's time to get familiar with the Black Panther character!"

It's a very vague post, but one filled with possibilities. Is it a part that he is simply interested in playing? Has Marvel actually approached him about the character? Could screen-testing already be underway? If either of the last two are the case, does that mean the studio is actively moving forward with their plans for a Black Panther movie?

For those unfamiliar with the character, Black Panther is the ceremonial name of T'Challa, the king of the fictional African nation Wakanda and leader of the Panther Tribe. The character is best known for both his great intelligence as well as incredible physical prowess, and wears a costume made entirely out of vibranium, the same material used to create Captain America's shield. He fights using claws made from the same material, which have the ability to cut through anything.

Chestnut actually has some very recent comic book movie experience, playing Sergeant Marcus Williams in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2, so perhaps he's just been bitten by the bug. Hopefully we'll here some official news soon.

I thought Ant-Man was going to be part of Phase 2, right before Avengers 2, but I checked and the release date is November 2015, after Avengers 2. Black Panther is an obvious choice for a new hero to star in their own movie, but with DD make in Marvel Studio control, that could be even more likely. Also, a Marvel movie with a female lead is bound to be something they're talking about. Black Widow is already established and Scarlet Johansson has marquee-star cache, but Carol Danvers' Ms/Captain Marvel would also make sense, especially if they introduce her in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is not that unlikely.

P.S. Chestnut would be a good choice for T'Challa.

Creed's Ryan Coogler in talks to direct Black Panther

Sources close to the negotiations have confirmed to me that Creed and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is in talks to direct Marvel's Black Panther.

This is a huge step for Marvel, who wants someone with talent but also with legitimacy, and does Coogler ever have both. He's a great filmmaker and he's a filmmaker who knows how to meld entertainment with real art.

More than that, he was able to work with Sylvester Stallone on a movie featuring Sly's most iconic character and still make it his own. Coogler knew how to hit the beats we want from a Rocky movie while making it fresh and exciting. These skills - handling opinions and finding new angles on well-worn stories - would serve him well on Black Panther.

THR is reporting the talks are taking place.

Ryan Coogler, the director who is coming off of the surprisingly strong opening of Creed, is in negotiations to direct Black Panther, Marvel Studios' movie featuring the first black superhero.

The move puts the on-off dance the studio and the filmmaker have been minueting back in sympatico. Coogler had met with the studio earlier in the fall but talks cooled. Now, with the afterglow of Creed’s success, negotiations are back on.

and finally - CONFIRMED

Michael B. Jordan Joins Marvel's 'Black Panther'

Michael B Jordan will reteam with his Creed director Ryan Coogler for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, inking a deal to join movie's buzzy cast, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

This would be the third time that Jordan will work with Coogler, who is helming the comic book movie as well as writing the script. The first time the duo came together was for the indie drama Fruitvale Station.

It is unclear who Jordan would play but one source told THR that it could be a villain. Marvel had no comment.

i mean, x-men banks, and they're seeing sony work out a deal for spidey...gotta figure they're thinking it's a cash cow if they can just get the right angle or something?

he's not wrong about the cast being good, at least. but yeah, i was so sure this would've been one of the properties that went back a long time ago.
