Today, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.

 

The move follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere outside the traditional summer blockbuster window and smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest grossing domestic release of all time with over $861.3 million and the third biggest global release ever with $1,886.7 billion.

 

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in preproduction and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski will executive produce. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming weeks.

I wanna see more humanizing of Storm Troopers. That was one of the coolest things in the last movie to see one have a personality. Plus it would be cool to see more defectors. I'm hard pressed to believe that there aren't more willing to join the resistance.

Crix Madine, the Alliance General in RoTJ was a former Imperial officer. Or was it ESB?

 

In any case he had just a bit part and his past was only revealed outside the movies, so I'm not sure how much it counts. But for sure defections were a big part of the alliance in the period of the first three movies.

So that solves the mystery of Luke's lightsaber. The Collector gave it to Maz Kanata.

It'd be cool if Luke goes to back to using his original lightsaber and gives his 'new one' (ROTJ lightsaber) to Rey.

 

It'd be super cool to see both iconic lightsabers in an action sequence together. Super fanboy moment if Luke goes all-out and keeps / uses both.

Double-fisted lightsaber wielding Jedi badass Luke Skywalker in Episode VIII? Yes please.

I also want Rey to use a Darth Maul style saber; it makes sense since she is so well trained with a staff already from her time on Jakku.

What Rey knew on Jakku is irrelevant. It may even be counterproductive.
