VR - PSVR, Oculus, Vive & Gear

few weeks ago, bishopcruz got a promo Gear VR kit (the one that works off your phone), and while ive only demoed horror stuff so far, it's really cool..especially for being on the low end of stuff.

I missed Best Buy's PS4 VR demos but heard nothing but great things - spiffytee was just raving about it as well, earlier, the owner of a local arcade was telling me & donny about how dope Vive was, with a baller friend of his who a) had the high-end PC for it & b) dedicated an entire room for its use, which is well outside of range for most of us but must've been cool to mess with.

Personally, i know some old school gamers looking at this like something negative/gimmicky, and are afraid it'll somehow take over...but that feels like concerns everyone had with motion controls, mobile gaming etc: some things work, some don't, and usually some genres find a better home on other formats. for me, i think horror, on-the-rails shooters, maybe certain kinds of racers/etc could be amazing, but am curious how say, fighters, platformers, etc would fare.

anyone here had a chance to mess with any of these so far? Post your impressions, or ideas/concerns and the like!

I was surprised bishop's VR thingie didn't make me sick but then again I was watching a video and not controlling anything myself. If this is the future of gaming then I'm definitely out, but hey...I've been out since the 90s, so nothing new! It's a shame though because it was really, really cool!

yeah, in that regard, i think PSVR has the best chance of success...but that $400 tag isnt helping, even if i know that tech cant be cheap.

i keep hearing people on about how if its not 60 FPS (per eye) and 1080p, it won't be super-immersive, but again, the one i played just with bish's phone felt cool. what was your occulus experience like bindy, any good demos?

This was at RTX a couple years ago when we covered it, and it was basically just a demo (I can't for the life of me remember the name of it) that was portal-esque and really just showcased how the VR worked. You would look a certain way to activate buttons and some puzzles just involved looking one way while walking which can be disorienting at first.

We've been talking a lot on the show about VR and the future of it in regards to both games and film, and a lot of this is going to come down to cost. Not just on the user level but also the development side. How many movies will want to FILM in VR if that means taking the focus off your main characters? (things being discussed in hollywood right now). What is the additive cost to make your game VR for a console since it does increase overall development time.

I guess one pro for those things is that porn is getting into it and tends to help industry trends.

Something not being talked about post E3 is how Sony is touting these 40+ VR "experiences" -but they are specifically not using the word GAME. This means at most youre looking at 15-40 dollar 2-4 hour max titles that are mostly there to show you what the future of VR CAN be, but not what it is now. This could hurt the launch if people feel burned that there are not enough solid games at launch to warrant a pickup at that pricepoint.

I've already posted my opinion on VR in another VR thread (wasn't there already a VR thread?)

It's novelty. I really don't see the majority of gamers enduring more than a couple o' hours w/ a visor on - isolated in a VR world. Your eyes/brain would melt. Not a go-to source for gaming. It's novelty - an expensive novelty.

I think the future of VR is in stuff like those goggles Microsoft is working on (Oculus?) - augmented reality is the future. Pokemon GO is officially putting AR on the map, though the 3DS has been having augmented reality - I'm glad to see it catch on. Nintendo, man. Glasses-free 3D screens (w/ dat face/head-tracking tech) is next to go standard.

I just don't see people sticking their head in a bucket becoming standard.

I wish I had a chance to try it out, but until I do I am in the camp of wishing it would just go crawl in a corner and die. It feels as gimmicky as ever, even at those price tags. I'm sure it is cool, but I think it's going to have lower support than 3rd parties at Nintendo. Honestly it feels like a bunch of 400 dollar Ouyas competeing with each other.

I may be way off base with that last one.

Blowing the dust off this thread to share my early impressions of PSVR after I decided to impulse buy in.

It's pretty great. I've never been all about them graphics so I'm happy with how it looks, although I can see how people who care about that stuff would be very put off.

Honestly, so far I've played a few games, watched some immersive 360 degree videos ranging from go pro flight to under water shit to VR porn and have had a blast. The games are going to be short but they're immersive and have replay value(the pack in VR worlds has this two man version of Warlords which is pretty ace). Apparently RE7 has 18 hours of story to it, making it the biggest VR game to date(on ps anyway). I played the VR demo(Kitchen) and that was pants-shittingly scary so I have high hopes for the full version.

yeah, bishopcruz got PSVR a while back & i had some fun with demos (Last Guardian, etc).  RE7 seemed terrifying but i just couldn't get used to the weird control scheme...doesn't help that i'd finally just finished the game a short while before, i imagine after some time it'd be cool for a replay.

Rez, on the other hand, all but justified the tech for me.

That's how I feel about Dangerball(VR worlds) and the VR mode of Super Stardust. I don't need photorealism, just something that fools me enough that I knock shit all over my desk every ten or so minutes.

Rez is on my list, I'ma have to wait for another sale though.

I haven't looked into the why of it, but the packaging and games take great pains to ensure I don't hand this to someone under 12. And I'll stick to that, but it's a shame because it could be a hell of a learning/education tool.

I got an Oculus Go for Father's Day. I like it. I don't play games on it at all.

I use mine to mostly watch videos, especially since there is only one TV in my house and my kids take control of it. This way I can sit next to them with earphones on and watch something. It's like watching a big screen TV in a private theater.

It definitely seems like it could be the future for education. I downloaded the Ann Frank Museum app and it was pretty neat.

Borderlands 2 being adapted to VR for release in December!

I've been having a blast with my PSVR and so far I've not been disappointed by anything I paid more than ten bucks for.

The only gripe thusfar has been with the PS aim controller, which could be just me getting used to it/not looking down the 'scope' properly. The Move controllers have been flawless for 1:1 tracking

That seems like a dick move. I tried to get Nicholas a PS5, but it is really expensive.

I'm just assuming here that your kid's name is Nicholas and you haven't entered into an arrangement with Hondos admin.

I'll be all over that VR at any price because again. the tech evolves and gets cheaper the more money gets thrown at it. Also fuck all those games I talked about above: The only game you need for PSVR is Superhot. Beat Sabre is also pretty sick.

Also I'll be all over that VR2 because I've been really impressed by the build quality of the PS5 controller, and am excited to see how immersive the haptics and button placement make it all.

yeah for all my talking shit, i may go half on one with teri - i've not dived into VR yet but with the push sony's making here i'm hoping for some big games, even if the lack of backwards compatibility for all but the most popular of the last gen games is a bummer

confirmation on half life alyx would be really cool.  really hoping sony doesn't pump this high-tech thing out and not really support it/hope for the best like they did early on with the vita, move, eyetoy etc

Genuine question, no ribbing: How do you go with these headsets with your (pardon medical jargon) 'eye thing'?

it's a fair question - i know there's a % of folks who cant use VR, but my weird combination of conditions thankfully just means my eyes prolly get tired at some point, i've not played anything for more than like an hour so not sure where that lies

it's funny, i can't see the boat in those old eye trick books in the day, but the 3DS for instance worked fine (even if i usually dropped the 3D for framerate boost anyway)
