Blair Witch (formally The Woods)

Recommended Posts

The film, which sounded quite familiar right off the bat, is set in Burkittsville, Maryland, and it centers on a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone. As it turns out, one of them is the brother of Heather Donahue, and he’s on the hunt for the sister who went missing back in 1999.

We’ll update you as soon as we learn more!

Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, The Woods stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson. Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge, The Strangers, It), Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Keith Calder, and Jessica Wu (Youre Next, The Guest) produce

Had no idea this was an Adam Wingard flick either. He did some shorts for the V/H/S/ movies and ABC's of Death (good ones) as well as You're Next, which was fantastic. I'm excited for this.

Do you like people yelling other people's names???? Well you'll love this movie!!!

Ok seriously, RT has a bad score for it right now, it's actually pretty damn fun though. The Blair Witch Project is my favorite horror movie of all time. So I'm biased when it comes to this. And while Book of Shadows is an incredible piece of shit, I still find it watchable for it's badness. Having said that, Blair Witch is an actual good movie, but an inferior sequel.

Thing that I liked:

-It respected TBWP and is a worthy successor. It adds a little bit of lore, but mostly retreads what we already know.

-It does some really cool stuff with reality and time manipulation that fucks with the characters. And that creates some really fun moments.

-The last 20 minutes are like a more insane version of the last 20 of the original. It's super fucking fun and intense and really scary. ****spoiler tagged at bottom

Thing I'm meh on:

-It's now a jump scare movie and they are used way too much. There are some good ones in there (Last bit like I said. Some of teh first ones) But right around the middle they get really cheap and annoying. In TBWP when the camera would cut off, then start back, it would just happen smoothly without a loud noise BECAUSE THATS HOW CAMERAS WORK. Every single time that happens here it is accompanied by an annoying KRCHHP noise that tries too hard to make you jump.

-It's not organic feeling at all. The actors feel like actors, and not real characters. I actually disliked the characters quite a bit and didn't give a shit what happened to them.

-Too much shaky cam, even for a found footage flick

It's too long. I was wishing they would get to the house sooner than they did.

Things I hated

-It's way too fucking loud. Not even with the jumps, when they yell it's just grating. And they yell a lot.

So all in all it's not nearly as good as the original movie. BUT, if you did like the first one, you can make it through this one. It's interesting enough and really the house sequence at the end is so fucking awesome it's worth the ticket price. Really kind of made me want an Outlast-esque Blair Witch themed game.

7/10

YOU FINALLY GET TO SEE HER. There's no really fantastic money shot, but that's a good thing. You get the glimpses you need and it's creepy as hell. It makes this one less of a psychological horror movie into a straight up monster flick. Some people will hate that, but I really dug that they did that.
