The NZA Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 written & directed by Jordan Peele! fair warning, it's one of those long trailers that basically makes you feel you've seen most of the movie. also spoilers, it's like the Stepford Wives, but racial. could be cool! Quote
Dag Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 When I first clicked on Hondo's and saw the title of this thread, I thought it had to do with the impending hurricane. Quote
Mr. Hakujin Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 You're so right on that trailer giving away too much. Cool to see Jordan Peele writing and directing a film not in his wheelhouse though. Quote
The NZA Posted February 24, 2017 Author Posted February 24, 2017 sitting pretty at 100% at nearly 100 reviews Quote
Donatella Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) sitting pretty at 100% at nearly 100 reviews YES! Get it, Jordan. So happy to see my dude killin' it after Key & Peele! So when are we going to see this? But like, for real. I feel like we owe it to him for not catching Keanu in theaters. I wanna give the guy some box office sales! Also Lego Batman still at 91%...double feature? Edited February 24, 2017 by Donatella Quote
Visitant Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 The GF and I are always hunting for more horror to watch, she pointed me towards this trailer and I seriously need to see this. I hope it's as amazing as the trailer has made it out to be Quote
Visitant Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 (edited) Great horror is about fear. Not boo I scared you fear but primal fear. Exorcism movies don't scare you because you're worried about being demon possessed, it's the fear of loss of control of ones self that is shakes you. Get out is first off, amazing. It tackles subjects like modern racism, integration and loss of cultural identity is a way that is frightening, enlightening and entertaining. Short answer, just fucking see it. Its one of the few horror movies I think deserves to be analyzed and dissected Edited February 27, 2017 by Bindusara Quote
The NZA Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 the trailer still showed too much™ this was really good, in a way that donny & i were talking about the rest of the night. i went in thinking there's no way this won't be heavy handed with the racism, and there's definitely moments, but for the social commentary it's telling, i came off if thinking it got into some deep stuff really well & maintained the horror of it all as it went along really well too. there's a lot of scenes to look back on when you know what's going on, and i love it when stories have those pieces that all come together after you solve it, but didn't feel just random/loose before said final piece. the jesse owens bit, the way everyone was mad at the brother when he got drunk & went on about how great dude would be for UFC stuff cause of "your frame & genetic makeup" (not for the overt racism, but for showing his hand a bit too much), bits like that just shined in retrospect. really happy for peele here & can't wait to see what he's got next. the trailer still showed too much™ Quote
Donatella Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 (edited) For me, a sign of a great movie is when it follows you home from the theater. When you can't stop thinking or talking about it. NZA and I caught this one last night and we talked about it the whole way home, and then pretty much up until I went to bed a couple hours later. We talked about the social commentary, about plot points, questions we had, theories we got right/wrong. It really stuck with us! I was wondering about the differences in Logan/Andre's and Chris's experiences. Andre was snatched off the street, so I don't think he went through the whole cocktail party/bidding process. But Rose forms relationships with these men, brings them home, puts the entire family through the rigamarole of pretending to be normal, even grandma and grandpa have to act like servants for a weekend. It just seems bizarre to have started with the snatching since that was a wildly different approach. I guess it shows the different ways Rose and her brother contribute to the twisted family tradition? I was just left wondering how Andre went from Andre to Logan. Was he just immediately taken into surgery? When did they have an auction for him? But man, I haven't been so creeped out by a movie in ages! The creep factor was crazy high. Really good jump scares too. Found this article about an alternate ending I'm glad they didn't go with because it would've broken my heart. Article is also very spoilery! Mr. Hakujin Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I asked my students today if they saw any movies over Mardi Gras break and this film was the overwhelming winner. I was gonna wait for video to catch this one, but after glancing through this threads and seeing its RT score I will definitely try to catch it in the theater. Quote
