Polygon: Yes, a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is in development. (X-Men gone, MCU focus)

Marvel and Capcom characters will duke it out in a new crossover fighting game coming to consoles next year. Multiple sources tell Polygon that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is currently in development and slated for release sometime in 2017.

Capcom will unveil Marvel vs. Capcom 4 this week alongside Sony’s PlayStation Experience event, we’ve been told, where the Capcom Cup 2016 Street Fighter 5 tournament will be held.

Fans of the series should expect Marvel vs. Capcom 4's roster of Marvel characters to draw strongly from the cinematic universe that Marvel Studios has popularized — and has full control over — during the past decade. That means fighting game fans will more likely see characters plucked from The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films, and not from properties like the X-Men. Expect to see superheroes like Ant-Man and Groot make appearances, with characters of mutant origin — think Wolverine and Magneto — sitting out this entry.

cool that we're getting Guardians/more MCU guys, but man this is an odd turn from where the franchise started

X-Men being completely out is totally weird. Especially no Wolvie. No Mega Man in MvC3 felt weird, too. Maybe Marvel doesn't want to give free publicity to upcoming Fox / X-Men movies? But - they'd be kinda shooting themselves in the foot doing that. Maybe it has something to do w/ the mix of MCU and comic X-Men...? They didn't have 'em cross over in Disney Infinity, either. I say do it - maybe it has to do w/ some kind of behind-the-scenes deal / agreement or something.

MvC4. Hm.

So, first off. It's possible that the X-troop isn't off the table. We don't know what the contract for Marvel/Capcom look like. If the X-troop is off the table, I suspect you're going to see the new lineup of characters from things like netflix, having a similar power/moveset to the characters we lost.

Let's talk about that title real fast. No, not the Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite title... The Marvel vs Capcom 4 one. I know this is a minor gripe, but really this is less of a sequel of Marvel vs Capcom in some ways and more of a sequel to the Marvel Super Heroes game. Or at the very least, a mashup of the two.

We've gotten our first hints that the infinity gems play a role in how the flow of combat works from that trailer. The Marvel Super Heroes fighting game was much more based around that concept. How one gem could turn the tide of battle.

How that's integrated into this iteration? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Chun-Li

Dante

Firebrand

Jedah

Monster Hunter

Morrigan

Nemesis

Ryu

Spencer

Strider Hiryu

X

Ant-Man

Captain America

Captain Marvel

Doctor Strange

Gamora

Hawkeye

Hulk

Iron Man

Nova

Rocket/Groot (this is how the character was named to me; I’m not sure if it’s just Rocket Raccoon with Groot assists or a redesigned character actually called Rocket/Groot)

Spider-Man

Thanos

Thor

Ultron

The Capcom side is missing a character, but it’s probably someone like Frank West.

Not confirmed, but seems about right.

Sad at X-men/Wesker removal, but really feelin' that Spencer, Thanos, Monster Hunter, Jedah game.

ooooook, lets get into this...

So here's the thing, until recently there was a strict no xmen policy when it came to marvel games. For example, I play 3 marvel mobile games - Contest of Champions, Future Fight and Puzzle Quest. Now 2 of those titles (CoC and PQ) came out before the mutant ban, so they have full access to the whole MU.

Recently, the ban has been lifted and as of this last week, FF is going to be getting mutants in the upcoming patch.

Now what does this mean for MvC?

Well..it means that the game was in development during the time the mutant ban was active, so all roster picks were based on that. With the ban lifted, i will bet you dollar to doughnuts that the first set of DLC characters will be X-based.

From what I understand, the Fantastic Four universe is still verboten. The bans technically were never officially announced but Marvel exes came forward at some point and flat out said that the four and xmen universes were being shat on because of their deals with Fox.

With that bit of news out to the public, Marvel started striking deals with fox, which is why things like Legion are listed as Co-branded by Marvel and Fox and with that comes the lifting of the banhammer on characters in those universes.

I don't know if you followed the news at all in the last couple years, but there was a rumor around Inhumans vs Xmen that if Marvel and Fox didn't play ball, the end of that series would have been the death of most of the mutants for the sake of making smaller print deals - effectively making less X-stories that games/movies/etc could pull from for source material.

Shit like this: http://comicbook.com/marvel/2017/05/14/marvel-restricts-fantastic-four-x-men-characters-upper-deck-sketch-cards/ came from it.

yeah, Thing is back in the comics soon, not sure about the rest of the FF - personally, unless they get hickman back, i don't miss them too much at the moment.

i thought it was a soft ban of sorts: there's still a baker's dozen x titles going, but they don't put their best talent on the core books. ive assumed that was because any new interesting characters writers come up with in said titles might be fair game in the next Fox film, depending on the contracts are structured....could be wrong there.

A lot of it was exactly this, but there was more and more pressure to remove xtitles (sans main one) all together because they didn't want to give them more fox movie material.

As for the FF - there's a reason they've been split up. It's all politics. Yes the characters still exist, but that change was made completely around the fact that they didn't want to produce more content for marvels first family without having the rights back in their wheelhouse.

the thing is, nobody really seemed to miss em - FF really only gets hype with a high profile writer (hickman, waid, etc). it cost them a lot less to take them off the board, so i imagine that was a no-brainer for them...you've still got a surfer book, namor, galactus & pretty much the entire FF villain gallery about in other books. johnny's shown up in spider-man, i don't know if thing was in the guardians post secret war at all though. reed & sue are the only ones really gone.

bindy - but didn't it seem odd to say they wanted x-titles gone, with 2 core books, 2 wolvy books, several other teams & new solos for jean & bobby? if we didn't know what we did, i wonder if anyone would've even noticed, with that lineup. the only obvious thing is the effort to push inhumans as the new mutants.

It's true, everyone could see the push for the inhumans to be the next x-men, that's what raised all the flags. And it would have taken a lot to get all the x-titles off the board, but they were trying to do it slowly so no one could notice...but people did.

As for the fantastic four - here's the thing. (not the actual thing) The FF property isn't about the FF themselves. For the most part, no one gives a shit about the team. Sorry fanboys. It's about the VILLIANS. The roster that is considered associated with the FF is muy importante. We're talking heavy hitters like galactus and even to an extent the silver surfer. Even guardians had a hard time getting all the things they need because a lot of that shit is locked down under the FF banner. So while marvels first family may mean shit to fox, those characters can be traded as needed for things they want/need.

didn't know about that trade, makes sense - and yeah, FF villains have been everywhere since the relaunch: daredevil, ultimates, black panther, avengers, guardians etc.

lotta books are getting canceled with the annual october shift on its way, but i'd bet the worst spidey book will outsell FF without Ellis or a heavy-hitter on it. that's not to say i don't want the FF back, but it's the book i read when a strong creative team has had a year or more and literally drop when they leave. i guess they could've done like the x-books and put newer talent on it, but they lost a lot of talent (writers & especially artists) so maybe they didn't wanna stretch their pool thinner?

good news on the scarlet spidey front though, panch - original costume's back, still don't know if ill keep reading it though.
