The NZA Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 i'm gonna assume threads we had for this & Angel were lost in one of the earliest purges! it's 20 years old today! 3/10/97 was when it first aired on the struggling WB, and it's yet again ocurred to me i've still never finished this show (or Angel, at that - which at times i totally thought was better). so yeah, let's talk about Hush & your favorite eps! for me, i totally didn't see the movie or take this show serious at all, but a friend had me watch part of season 1, and then i caught the end of season 2 when...shit goes down, and damn, i was hooked. shit got dark for a show during that era! also, here's the unaired pilot: Quote
Visitant Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I was pretty late to the Joss game TBH. I loved the movie, watched the first ep and went "this isnt the movie" and didn't give a shit until a little before the last season of buffy when friends started doing weekly viewings at mi casa. I feel bad I didn't love it from the outset the way everyone else did but it did make for some great binge watching after the fact. I enjoy Buffy, but I think I enjoyed Angel more - not really sure the reason, i'd have to go back and watch them both again and take notes about it. Quote
Donatella Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Buffy! I love love loved that show but thought it fell off in later seasons. I didn't watch much of the last season at all. My favorite episodes are Hush and the Wild At Heart (a turning point for Oz and Willow that was heartbreaking!). I remember the musical episode, Once More With Feeling, being a hit but I haaaaated it. Man, that was awful. Buffy is a show I still put on as background noise when I'm cleaning or studying. It makes me feel good and brings back fun memories! It was my intro to Joss, who I just adore. I can't believe it's 20 years old... I never got into Angel! Is it worth watching? Quote
Visitant Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Some people love it, some people feel it's just a crappy offshoot of buffy. Personally, I really enjoy it. I mean, it's gonna some really awkward shit in there but it's a hell of a ride. Plus the later stuff when Spike gets involved post Buffy ending is just pure gold. (see the episode where spike and angel are puppets) Also A+ for the episode for the Simon Templeman (Kain from the legacy of Kain games) plays the reaper. All he had to do is say the word "vampire" and I knew it was him. Quote
Iambaytor Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Angel is better written and has a better cast of characters. It goes down some weird paths but if you've ever wanted Cordelia and Faith's goofball watcher Wesley to grow significantly (not to mention Ange, Faith, and Spike) then it's definitely got stuff to hook you. Also the villains of Angel are who save the day at the end of Buffy. In general it's a stronger show and doesn't tail off as much as Buffy does (in fairness, it has 3 fewer seasons.) Fair warning: Angel has a character named Connor whose origin is a major spoiler, he is fucking awful and you will hate every second he is on the show. He's like Faith in season 3 multiplied by a thousand. Quote
The NZA Posted July 21, 2018 Author Posted July 21, 2018 Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting rebooted Quote 20th Century Fox Television, who produced the original Joss Whedon drama, have put a new take on the beloved Sarah Michelle Gellar drama in development. Writer Monica reen, who worked with Whedon on ABC's Agents of SHIELD, has been hired to pen the adaptation.Whedon will be an exec producer on the series and has been working with Breen on the script, which features a black actress stepping into the role of Buffy made famous by Gellar.Gail Berman, Joe Earley, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui (who produced Whedon's original Buffy film that inspired the TV series) will also serve as exec producers on the potential series. A network is not yet attached for the new Buffy, talks for which began last fall. Quote
The NZA Posted July 21, 2018 Author Posted July 21, 2018 yeah I'm not sure how this'd work either Quote
Iambaytor Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 I'm fine with a reboot, the show hasn't aged very well and though a lot of what worked about it at the time still shines through it's still very much a WB show from the 90s. On the surface the casting of an African American actress is fine, it's an empowering role in all that but that's kind of losing the elemental point of the series in that Buffy is representative of the bubble-headed blondie that dies first in most horror movies, she's meant to subvert that. I'm still very interested in a reboot. Once a character takes on legendary status they deserve to be remixed and re-interpreted like Batman or Zorro James Bond, this still might suck but I'm interested to see what they do. Quote
Visitant Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 Does it need to be rebooted? No mean like...is the term reboot applicable here? Like to every generation a slayer is born... Quote

Like to every generation a slayer is born... Well this is an excellent point. I couldn't pinpoint why I was so against this, but that's it. We don't need a new Buffy. We've had two Buffys. I would be down for a new slayer! One who comes into a post-Buffy world, and maybe SMG even stops in to mentor her once in a while. That would be cool! Ugh. Missed opportunity here. I'm still gonna hate-watch the "reboot," though. I can't not. Also, why haven't they considered Firefly? Seems so weird in this reboot era! The fan base is actually clamoring for it! Quote
The NZA Posted July 23, 2018 Author Posted July 23, 2018 i wonder if buffys been over so long people might be down for a reboot, whereas firefly fans (even now) would prolly be upset with a different cast Quote

I mean Nathan Fillion keeps busy, but what are the rest of them up to? I imagine many of them would love to come back! And you know even Nathan would participate as much as possible. He loves that fan base! Quote
The NZA Posted July 23, 2018 Author Posted July 23, 2018 I've thought that too, but...with Netflix racing to reboot popular stuff (presumably before they lose content when disney gets fox/hulu etc) if this ensemble cast is available, what's the holdup? sure, big cast space western can't be cheap but i gotta assume they don't think enough of the base is there to pick up where it was left off, or something else I'm not thinking of Quote
Iambaytor Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 At this point I just assume it's Adam Baldwin's fault. There's two reasons this won't be a continuation. 1. Dealing with the continuity is a clumsy mess and it would be so much easier to start fresh, and you know fans are going to go crazy if they fuck up one little detail. It's my understanding that Sarah Michelle Gellar is done with Buffy anyway. 2. Who wants to was the Afterm*a*s*h* of Buffy the Vampire Slayers? You care about the original show but you're not the target demo and in much the same way you probably didn't give 2 shits about the Kristy Swanson movie, teens and teens aren't going to like all this baggage from a 90s show that they probably find boring and dumb. It's a lose-lose to try and pander to fans of the original so the best they can hope for is to break it off and start fresh and maybe attract a new audience. 1 Quote
Visitant Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 A couple months back Alyson did say that if they ever did a Buffy reboot that she would like to be on board. ...although why would she want to give up that sweet Penn and Teller gig. Quote
Donatella Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 Yeah SMG was done with Buffy when she was on Buffy! There were so many stories about her exhaustion from the physical demands of it. I remember hearing an interview with either her or Alyson, I can't remember at the moment, saying Sarah was so worn out, the writers wrote that episode where Buffy's turned into a rat so she could just do voice-overs and not have to fight for a bit (and that was only in season 2!). So yeah, my wish for a cameo is probably a pipe dream. But I would take Alyson any day! Honestly, I'd be happy to see any of them come back for even just a scene or two in the reboot. They probably couldn't play themselves, but it'd still be neat! Quote
The NZA Posted July 23, 2018 Author Posted July 23, 2018 on that note: how many of them have regular work these days? i know seth green took off for a while there, but so many others (between that & angel) I've only seen a bit in the time since Quote
Iambaytor Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 I think Bones has ended but I think David Boreanaz has another show. He's basically always been on TV since Buffy. Quote
Visitant Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 I don't think this is the political climate to have David Boreanaz trying to seduce a high school girl again 1 Quote
