The Orville

Recommended Posts

I struggled through three episodes, but couldn't take anymore. I am stunned at the acclaim it has attained here, especially from you Haku. You think this is similar to TNG? It feels more like a cross between Andromeda and American Dad.

And I went in fully expecting to love it, but it disappointed on every level. It was exactly what it looked in the trailers, average comedy and worse drama.

Well, back to rewatching DS9 I go.

Damn. That's sad to hear. I never really watched either Andromeda or American Dad, so I can't agree or disagree with you there. However, I really like Orville for what it is--an unabashed love letter to ST:TNG with humor thrown in. And Panch is right, I found the more I watched the more I liked the show.

Was it the first 3 cause it only goes up from there.

Yeah, it was the first three.

I'll be honest, I've only seen a bit of one episode ever of Andromeda, but it's easily the worst of the TNG ripoffs.

Ye both say it gets better, okay, I'll give it one more shot. If I'm to watch one episode that represents it at its best, what should I watch?

Saw S2E1 and dug it. Beverly Crusher never had to deal with shit like this from Wesley (except that one time at the academy). Kinda surprised they didn't get more graphic with the actual ja'loja, but I'm not complaining. (Ain't nobody tryna see that.) But this episode kind of encapsulates  why I loe this show so much. It's essentially a parody of Star Trek & TNG but it's done in a loving and serious way,; it's tone is similar in a lot of ways to Galaxy Quest.

Anyway, I need to get to S2E2 soon.

Episode 2 grants your graphic wish. (Not ja'loja)

Boy howdy. 😯 Hell hath no fury like a Maklan (s

I'm not sure if that particular use of the holodeck was ever addressed on Star Trek: TNG or DS9 (I know Quark had "holo-sweets" used for that purpose in DS9) but I know they did address the addiction of holodeck with Lt. Barkley in some  great ways in TNG. Orville handled it in a way that I thought was, um, interesting.

S2E2

The pr0n addiction stuff was handled well, and the fact Bortus got a computer virus from basically going to a sketchy porn site because his addiction got too heavy was also a nice touch. However, the whole ship nearly flying into the collapsing star because of the virus and Bortus just receiving a semi-dressing down for it felt wrong. At the very least he should've had a formal reprimand and even possibly been demoted.

Also, the whole only saving half the species thing felt way underplayed. I know it was there to serve as a moment to help Bortus come to a decision about his marriage, but the whole "Sophie's Choice" thing felt shoehorned in.

Still, it was a good episode and the CGI for that star was amazing. Not to mention all those Maklan prosthetics. (So many nipples.)

I like this show on the whole, but episodes like this week's can feel like a round of star trek trivia where you try to spot the star trek episode being referenced. I honestly don't know if the show will survive without its own worldbuilding. I feel like i know more about the kril than the union.

I'm hearing the ratings are keeping the show on the bubble. It has enough promise that I'd hate if it gets canned.

I concur with every point you've made.

It's got sooo much potential.

Well....I kinda thought that too, but maybe something is going on with the actors and they've written a story to reflect that? I think last season had thirteen episodes. But yeah, this is a biggie. I'm not sure how they're going to top this in a finale. Unless the next episode does not resolve things, then one would assume a season finale would.

How many more are there in the season cause this story really feels like a season finale. And if not, what the heck are they gonna do for the season finale?!

I think it's 20 episodes for the season.

Spoiler

Holy cow, that space battle was fucking intense. I like how the Krill now view the union's actions as the will of Avis, and may evaluate them more positively, even if only as instruments of their god's will.

Of course Isaac is still with the crew, but it didn't come at no cost to him, and it looks to be less 'business as usual' and more 'second chance,'  which is great.

Though honestly, if he's had those head guns this entire time he probably shouldve used em before.

I'll admit it ended predictably (with the exception of the Krill joining in), but it was still a great ride, with the massive space battle being the highlight, of course. Still, it blows my mind that that wasn't the season finale..., because it totally felt like a season finale.

If I'm a paranoid pessimist, this two-parter was a watercooler moment. Honestly, it made me find y'all and tell you to make sure not to miss it, and I'm sure that I'm not the only person to find lapsed, indifferent, or I'll-catch-up-later friends and make sure they check in.

The measured ratings show an increase in viewership from part one to part two, and I know that doesn't count streamers like me. By putting it prior to the season finale, it increases interest and possible viewership, making it more likely Fox doesnt pull a Fox and send it to die.

I'm sure I'm overthinking.
