Rumor: Joker origin movie will feature a young, bullied Joker with a permanent smile

Last week we learned that The Hangover director Todd Phillips and the legendary Martin Scorsese were working on a Joker origin movie. And now thanks to an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience of all places, we have some juicy new details!

Brendan Schaub is a former MMA fighter who’s transitioned to Hollywood over the last few years. At one point on the podcast they were talking about Tim Burton, which lead to Batman, which lead to the new Joker movie. Schaub is friends Todd Feldman, who just so happens to be Todd Phillips’ agent, and revealed some new details about the movie.

“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips,” Schaub said. “It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.” Check out his comments in the video below around the 1:03:32 mark.

Schaub’s comments line up with what we learned last week, The Joker origin movie will be gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy, according to Deadline.

Don't know if the makers of the Joker origin movie are aware...but the current Joker doesn't have a permanent smile.

They're probably remembering...the Joker.

Maybe as a kid he walked around w/ his hand over his face...and people made fun of him. So he became the Joker.

It says so much - that THIS version of the Joker can get the DC 'big wigs' excited. Coupled w/ the decision to make a Joker origin movie...AND it's 'origin' premise already not inline w/ their crap-Joker version...

"Jesus, guys...I said I'm busy."

LOL - maybe this Joker movie will be the beginning of an alternate DCCU.

They have said that it wont be Leto here. They announced a SEPARATE movie with him and Margot Robbie the day after this one. They don't know what the fuck they are doing over there.

DC greenlights Joker solo movie for Jared Leto

“Sources tell Variety that Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from “Suicide Squad.”

Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by “Suicide Squad” and tie into future installments of that property. Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a “Birds of Prey” feature, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto’s Joker.”

yup, DCEU is gonna be fine

Golly I wish I had some entrance music like a wrestler because HEEEERE COMES JAY WITH SOME UNPOPULAR MOVIE OPINIONS!

I liked Leto's Joker because he brought a theatrical aspect lacking from non-animated iterations, and he was scary in that unhinged meth addicted friend of a friend who's in your yard or something similar(a juggalo I guess), which in fairness is the scariest kind of clown this side of Pennywise.

It sucks that his likeness was coopted by a bunch of really tragic people, or that he coopted their likeness.

Aside from that initial promotional still (which was awful) I don't hate his look as much as I expected (the grills are the worst of it) but Leto phoned in that performance big time.  He's got a lot of making up to do if he's going to try and anchor a film, unless this is just going to be a stealth Batman movie.

yeah i didn't really hate his performance, i just didn't find it interesting enough to want mote of it? it's an exciting role & I'm not against his take on it, I'm just more interested in the inevitable universe reboot & seeing who gets a crack at it next

DCEU right now feels a little like fox xmen/ff stuff, everything kinda seems like a holding pattern until actual direction comes around

Oh I forgot to mention there in my Leto apology that there's no reason whatsoever for a Joker solo movie. I mean I understand the idea behind a HQ joint project because it's taking easy money from suckers, but an origin film ruins whatever mystique the character has left.

Pre-Flashpoint is a good opportunity for DC to get experimental IMO. Maybe some low-budget projects to just see what sticks to the wall, and learn from that moving beyond the reset.

What'd you guys think of the laugh? I thought it was adequate.

Those aren't grills. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. You don't fight the batman and keep your own teeth.

Damn. Digging the aesthetic big time. The broken down merry-go-round, the lettering on the wall, his clothes, the creepy clown, the whole vibe. I'm liking all of it. Joaquin has a good face for this.

So we're going Killing Joke origin then?

Looks like it, right?  In the rest of the pics on the original article, he is coming out of a door that says "Ha-Ha's Talent Room." So definitely seems like the failed stand-up comedian story.

Yeah, apparently they're going for a man desperate to prove himself/Taxi Driver vibe. The fact that Scorsese is producing further indicates this, I just hope it's not too derivative. If not, it could really be what I've been calling out for DC to do for a while now. Forget about the Extended Universe stuff, leave that to Marvel and concentrate on smaller, lower budget, but more intellectually challenging films in the mould of Logan.
