Donatella
I wasn't sure if I should make a Bert & Ernie thread or just put this under Sesame Street. Feel free to change the title, admins! 'BERT AND ERNIE WERE A COUPLE WHEN I WAS WRITING THEM': 'SESAME STREET' WRITER MARK SALTZMAN REVEALS Quote Bert & Ernie were written as a same-sex couple, says writer Mark Saltzman. Saltzman joined the writing team behind Sesame Street back in 1984 and at that time he was in a long-term relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman and the couple were together until Glassman’s death in 2003. With the introduction of two iconic characters, Bert & Ernie, many parents and children wondered about the sexual orientation of the two puppets and now Saltzman has revealed he didn’t have any other way to “contextualise” the characters as anything but a same-sex couple. More here. Original Queerty interview here. I love this. If nothing else, it might be a good resource for ridiculous parents who complain about how to explain to their children what it means to be gay. Da Cap'n 2099
Completely unrelated: conservatives will be protesting a kid's show soon.

Donatella
Puppets don’t have a sexual orientation? Ok, Sesame Street.
