The NZA
Ok, so chiefy thinks my permissions issue is a registry problem. He didnt get a chance to really run any other diagnostics over here, but my inability to a) join a network workgroup (via windows 2000) b) rename my hard drive Seem to be user/permission issues, but again, chiefy's sayin registry. The only other trouble ive had, aside from flash being a bitch, is programs sometimes close on their own, like cute FTP, but its rare, and prolly unrelated. Im attatching a pic of my control panel/users & passwords screen. You cant see the first entry, which is Adminstrators, and im still unsure why Irish Cowboy isnt the default admin; perhaps that's the problem? Take a look, seems like too many entires there to me anyway... ps ima go try daytripper's advice too.
daytripper
Administrator = GOD Irish Cowyboy is in the administrators group, but that group is basically "You almost have complete control" Group. Dont know what to do from there....Irish Cowboy = members of "administrators", but like you said, that group seems to have almost complete power. PS who is this guy, and why does he have access to my comp? Is this what you get for upgrading win98 to 2k? pps Tip the dancers always.
BigChiefSlapaho
ASP.NET is a debugger account setup by Windows when you download the .NET Framework through Windows Update. Don't know the reprocussions if you remove it tho.

daytripper
***long story, you can skip this part*** Funny thing happened like at 4am this morning. I was d/l porn and games (as usual) when I heard this loud shierking noise from my pc that woke me up. So I got out of bed and unplugged the PC. (repair work is a bad idea in a semi-concious state). In the morning I checked to see if it was a bad CD in the tray, but that drive was empty. So I assumed the worst, a faulty Hard disk. I ran utilities like scan disk to see if I can get around the bad sectors, but the noise continued. After taking off the access panel and cleaning out the parts I noticed the noise came from my CPU fan, which is like $3 to replace, and furthermore, after a throuoh cleaning it operated normally w/o the noise. **** When you have a problem with your PC, don't automatically take it in to a shop. You might rack up a lot of unneccessary charges. Instead, remember you have friends willing to help you get going for a lot less.
daytripper
Hrm, software question. In upgrading your PC to windows XP pro or 2003 server you have the option of keeping yourfilesystem intact. Then it asks if you want to replace the folder containing the last verion of windows. So you replace the old version and you boot up, viola, heres my problem. How do I get all the programs under c:\program files to my start list? and when I go into the *.exe the programs wont start., giving me the error message vital data to run program missing. Is that a registry thing? Must remember to do backups, DT
soldier of fortune
Just wondering, is there any software out there that would allow you to rip the audio from a DVD? dante
How do I get all the programs under c:\program files to my start list?and when I go into the *.exe the programs wont start., giving me the error message vital data to run program missing. Is that a registry thing? Must remember to do backups, DT well, when you install programs you must remember that they install critical files in Windows and Program Files folders eventhough you put the file in a folder called, GAME for example. But you say you upgraded and that's weird...what were you upgrading from? IF ALL ELSE FAILS REFORMAT! heh

dante
I don't know...but if you reinstalled them, they should work. I've never seen this. All the programs are listed but everyone of the executable files are missing/broken?
daytripper
I'm sure by now you are aware that the windows os is housed in a directory named "Windows". Whenever you are doing an upgrade theres the option of "leave current fire system intact". then later you are prompted to either overite or rename the directory that you are installing the newer version of windows on. IF you opt to overwrite, it will lead to this situation where all the program DLL's and start menu shortcuts are overwritten and rendered useless. Amazing the things I learn experimenting ;)

BigChiefSlapaho
DT: The only reason you relocate the new copy of Windows to a new folder is to have a DUAL BOOT on the same partition. So of course your icons and start menu's are missing, you probably have two operating systems on the same hard drive and the new one was installed clean (unbeknownst to you) and there's nothing to go on. spiffytee
Just wondering, is there any software out there that would allow you to rip the audio from a DVD? As in i have a music DVD i wanna convert to MP3 to put on my shiny new ipod ok, first you gotta install dvddecrypter. start up your normal dvd program on your computer and play a few seconds of the dvd and then close the program. start up dvd decrypter. under mode, select iso. it should automatically select the longest program "main movie." click the button to the left that says dvd>hard drive. now that you have a seperate folder in your hd, you will see it under win explorer. start up dvd2avi. click on open... go to you hd and find the .vob files that dvddecrypter created. of course start with the name_01 file. it should automatically select the rest and put them in order. hopefully you know your dvd well, since you should know which audio track you want. under the menu, select demux track #. now that that's done, you should have a .ac3 file. start up besweet. select the input file, name the output file. click on lame and select the kind of kbps you want. then click ac3 to mp3. this program also converts wav to mp3.
