The NZA
surprised nobody ever added Manic Street Preachers "Suicide is Painless" (M*A*S*H theme) and that Donnie Darko one, "Mad World"....i forget who remakes it, i think it was Tears for Fears originally. Immortal Technique's "You never know" is up there, too.

Darth Fluffakins
Its strange that the original really isn't all that depressing, its the cover in donnie darko that rips apart your heart.
Jont
Its strange that the original really isn't all that depressing, its the cover in donnie darko that rips apart your heart. I don't get how the Tears for Fears version isn't depressing, is it the drum machine? Great as both versions are, Jules does take the obvious route, kind of what Jose Gonzales did with The Knife's Heartbeats, it's smooth as fuck, but it's a shadow of it's former self. Which brings us round to Jose's cover of Kylie Minouges' Hand on your Heart,(link goes to my brother's myspace blog and the partial source of most this ranting) which doesn't make a sad song out of a camp anthem, it reveals the bitter lonely core of something you took for granted because you never listen closely enough/ at all, it's like realising Nine Inch Nail's Perfect Drug is about Trent Reznor's puppy. Similar depressing songs that don't feel the need to wear it on their sleeves include Outcast's Hey Ya! and Whitney Houston's I Want to Dance With Somebody. *stuck up as I am, I will admit that I prefer Gary Jules' version, yay for misery at the top of the charts. the division of joy
Dire Straits - Brother In arms These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day youll return to Your valleys and your farms And youll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire Ive watched all your suffering As the battles raged higher And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms Theres so many different worlds So many differents suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the suns gone to hell And the moons riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But its written in the starlight And every line on your palm Were fools to make war On our brothers in arms something about that song.... alive she cried
So there are some pretty damned sad songs out there. Most of them are written by Tom Waits. So true, here's another by him Poor Edward Did you hear the news about Edward? On the back of his head He had another face Was it a woman's face Or a young girl They said to remove it would kill him So poor Edward was doomed The Face could laugh and cry It was his Devil twin And at night she spoke to him Of things heard only in hell They were impossible to separate Chained together for life Finally the bell tolled his doom He took a suit of rooms And hung himself and her From the balcony irons Some still believe he was freed from her But i knew her too well I say she drove him to suicide And took Poor Edward to Hell One of the best songs i've ever heard

White Line Nightmare
I've been really into Amy Winehouse's Back to Black recently. Two of my favorite songs are also the saddest, about loneliness and love gone bad... "Back to Black"- Amy Winehouse He left no time to regret Kept his dick wet With his same old safe bet Me and my head high And my tears dry Get on without my guy You went back to what you knew So far removed from all that we went through And I tread a troubled track My odds are stacked I'll go back to black We only said good-bye with words I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to..... I go back to us I love you much It's not enough You love blow and I love puff And life is like a pipe And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside We only said goodbye with words I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to We only said good-bye with words I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to Black, black, black, black, black, black, black, I go back to I go back to We only said good-bye with words I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to We only said good-bye with words I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to black "Love is a Losing Game"- Amy Winehouse For you I was a flame, Love is a losing game Five story fire as you came, Love is losing game One I wish I never played, Oh, what a mess we made And now the final frame, Love is a losing game Played out by the band, Love is a losing hand More than I could stand, Love is a losing hand Self-professed, profound Til' the chips were down Know you’re a gambling man Love is a losing hand Tho' I battled blind, Love is a fate resigned Memories mar my mind, Love it is a fate resigned Over futile odds, And laughed at by the Gods And now the final frame, Love is a losing game
