Who do you see as the next BOND?

Recommended Posts

I mentioned that in my first post. It's part of the modern/western muslim angle.

Besides, Bond could have 5 martinis a movie and he'd still be drinking less than the average Saudi prince.

In a very real sense, ISIS is seen as the MI5 off the muslim world. Due to propaganda and even western press coverage, their fighters are seen as cool rogues amongst a lot of the muslim youth because they use guns, get laid constantly and have cool hair. Those teenage girls fleeing to join up and be warrior brides aren't doing it because of faith. Their giney tickles for those guys.

Honest to God, that 'hero' image is a massive part of the reason they recruit so well.

Bond showing that you can get laid by means other than forcing captives to marry you or that maybe dancing and drinking and gambling are fun too is an amazing alternative to steer the kid looking for a hero into a less dangerous direction.

They did do that. The result was Daniel Craig's Bond.   Personally, I'd like to see more Craig, but Idris Elba would be great too.

look at Tomorrow Never Dies, michelle yeoh does her own stunts/fights   brosnan didn't

I've never been a huge fan of the franchise but I'd watch if Idris is cast in the role. He'd make an amazing Bond. He can act, he's handsome, he can play a smooth, badass spy with absolutely no problem.

As an aside, I stopped reading the article when they said Tom Hiddleson was "of Hiddleswift fame."  Seriously, Esquire? You're gonna reduce him to a fleeting relationship with TaylorfuckingSwift? Was that supposed to be funny? Who reads Esquire? Who is this for?

I should kinda go back on my previous statement a bit, due to complete ignorance on the subject of James Bond. Let me rephrase:

I have seen very few James Bond movies, what I DO know of James Bond might be through a filter - the way he's often talked about, shown in the few clips I catch here and there. What I get is - He likes to drink, womanize and sometimes do spy stuff. My initial question was about the character /if/ my conceptions about the character are correct. If that is basically what James Bond is, is it time to re-evaluate the character and make him fit more closely in with modern times.

That being said, Idris would be the person to really do it, I think.

...and there you go. Question answered. Maybe I'll check out those Bond movies. I heard they were pretty good.

yeah I've seen all but a couple of the lesser ones, and casino royale breaks my top 5. we have an old bond thread on here too bindy, some of the classics really hold up, i think

and daniel craig absolutely was a modernizing of the character at the time - brosnan was good for the role but he came in too late, honestly (ive read he was unfortunately locked into a long contract with the tv show equalizer or some such). goldeneye was fantastic, tomorrow never dies was good (michelle yeoh carried some scenes) but they got progressively worse after that and the franchise was in shambles when his contract was up.

for years we had other attempts (val kilmers the saint comes to mind) but i still think the jason bourne influence at the time was tremendous: parkour, brutal/well choreographed fight scenes, excellent car chases that clearly took it up a notch, an overall more nihilistic tone (vs camp), etc. casino royale very much felt like a response to all that, and i think most of us were grateful

While Casino Royale changed the way we look at the Bond franchise it really was Skyfall that made the most strides at elevating the character into something really special. That, the villain and Judy Dench's character all take that next step. It's not only a great (and my personal favorite) Bond film, but also a great film. Period.

That's racist.

Pierce Brosnan's Irish...

Still need to see Skyfall, heard good things. Did they fall into a one good, one shit pattern? Spectre was annoying nonsense, yeah I can take the we do good spying, they want to do bad spying. But MI5 brass effectively forming a Scooby Gang to fix things...er.. and Bond blows up the baddies base with a single bullet was a bit too much when they did it in Quantum of Solace, that shit should take a round of MP5 fire into the glowing bit at the centre of the base.

Bond's a spy, Bond's British, Bond's dickish. With so many versions, those are the only real common elements. I think whatever they do, Bond should be of the establishment and a particularly questionable character, but it's 2018 we're several decades past the idea that the British establishment is entirely white.
