Who Should Play the Next...Joker!

Recommended Posts

So the rumor's been around for a long time that the ending of Batman Begins give a small hint at a certain pasty-faced king of comedy being the villain in the sequel. Nolan has said that he would love to re-do the Joker, even suggested that he'd like to do two movies, one that deals with the Joker's capture and the second that deals with his trial (sadly, that seems a little risky for Warner Bros). Besides getting Nicholson back in the purple suit - because that ain't gonna happen - who do you think should be the next guy with the surgically enhanced grin?

How could noone have picked up this thread yet??

I personally'd like to see maybe Jason Lee in the string-tie & lipstick. He's got wise-cracking villians down(Azrael in Dogma), and a malevolent streak a mile wide, and the smile'd need little work. Helps that he's a runty little bastard too.

I like Jason Lee, but he's just witty and sarcastic!! You need to cast somebody thats just fuckin' crazy!! The only guy that fits that bill is... Jim Carrey!! And why the fuck not!! He was BRILLIANT as the Riddler (even though that movie sucked)!! And I think he would fit in the new Batman series, cause he's made a respectable actor outta himself with Eternal Sunshine, Man on the Moon and Truman Show!!

I like Jason Lee, but he's just witty and sarcastic!!  You need to cast somebody thats just fuckin' crazy!!  The only guy that fits that bill is... But there's nothing scary about Jim Carrey. The Joker needs to be funny and scary.

The short list is rumored to be narrowed down to just four names.

1. Crispin Glover

2. Mark Hamill

3. Lachy Hulme

4. Paul Bettany

All four have their pros and cons. I'd say the one with the least chance is Lachy Hulme (known to American audiences as Sparks in The Matrix Revolutions and even more prominently in the Matrix console game). Though a competent actor, I know that Warner Bros seems to feel that, with Christian Bale still being relatively unknown, the part of Batman's most famous villain shouldn't be given to an actor who's even less known. Crispin Glover has proven himself capable of playing dark, intense characters (though usually dark, quietly intense characters, something the Joker is definitely not) but has occasionally been accused of being difficult to work with. Paul Bettany would probably be the most sought-after choice for Warners. His star is rising and he's easily the most recognizeable of the group (especially since it's been years since Luke Skywalker graced a movie screen...in adult form) and he's got the acting chops to boot, with the ability to play really scary characters (Gangster No 1 and the upcoming DaVinci Code). But my vote still goes to Hamill. He may not be the most obvious choice - he's not as young as the others, he doesn't have the immediate Joker look like the others do, but he has one advantage: he knows the character. He's spent years playing the Joker, and playing him so well that his vocal performances eclipse any other performance of the character. Even Nicholson's performance pales in comparison because let's face it, though entertaining, Nicholson wasn't playing the Joker, he was playing a slightly loonier version of Jack Nicholson. Hamill has been portraying the character nearly flawlessly for years and probably deserves a shot at doing so on the big screen. Plus, c'mon, it'd be nice to let that guy get out from the shadow of Skywalker for once.

I'll admit Pancho, when I saw Carrey in Batman Forever* I thought he was playing The Joker instead of The Riddler, but I still think Hamill's voice is selling point here. With a little makeup he can look younger, adn the Joker needs more than just "a little make up." Plus, I'm sold on his ability to do the reole physically based on his performance as Cockknocker.

I say that instead of "Carrey in BF" because I don't want anyone thinking I caught Jim Carrey penetrating my boy friend with his penis.

I change my mind from Jim Carrey to somebody else...

I say they take the "Daredevil" route and just make the Joker a black guy!! You can't tell me Chris Tucker wouldn't be the best Joker!!

Joker: "DAAAAAAAAAYMN BATMAN, YOU GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!!!!"

Batman: "Have you ever danced with the Devil in pale moonlight?"

Joker: "AND YOU KNOW THIS... MAN!!"
