If you could do a superlative for medicoricy, Silent Hill might be one of the most medicore movies I've ever seen. I broke two of my cardinal movie rules (don't watch horror movies, and don't watch video game adaptations) to hang out with some peoples last night. A testament to loniliness.

MM, i'm just saying that i don't always agree with your taste in horror. what scares one person may not scare another. the "shakey people" effect scares the fuck out of me. for real. i hate that effect. but it might not scare everyone, so i will never rewatch a movie like the remake of house on haunted hill whereas you may have thought it sucked as a horror flick. you have pretty good taste in movies otherwise.

on to my review:

acting sucked dick.

gore and disturbing characters made up for it.

i've read a lot of reviews that said the plot was confusing and if i didn't live with 1-2ish (sometimes) people who are fans of the game, i think i would've thought the plot didn't make any sense.

it was a little too long.

pacing was surprisingly decent though.

Ok, didn't get to see it last night like I said, but I'm off to see it in less than an hour.

Crazy mixed reviews, but none of them can be written off.

I'm really open minded about this right now.

If not a review, then a rating forthcoming.

saw a screener today for it. It sucked sooooooooo bad.

Review later.

Review now

I'm really displeased that the lead character was made a woman. It's supposed to be the bloke looking for his daughter...... :bored:

Anyway, I need a review made by someone that's actually played all of the games.

I liked it. I saw it twice yesterday (Once just Cj and I at a matinee(I keep reading this word as manatee. heh.), the second time with Dowe and his guy Kevin).

Silent Hill - A few thoughts on the subject. By a Metal Heart:

We both felt that it was pretty close as it could be to the game.

The music was awesome, and Cj said it's because the guy who does the music for the games did the music for the movie so there ya go.

Not so much scary as it was intense, I thought. There were a few times when I thought "How the hell are they/she going to make it out of this one?".

Cybil was sexy as hell.

(that how you spell her name? rowr!).

Fin!

I just saw the movie, rocked in ways I didn't expect, sucked in ways I was willing to forgive.

It was all very French. I don't know if anyone saw Christophe Gans' last movie, Brotherhood of the Wolf (if not, why not) but a lot of it's style, camp and comic book horror carried over into Silent Hill. So even when I felt it betrayed the nature of the games, it still set it's self up as a solid dark fantasy.

That said I hope if they make a sequel they'll adapt the story from the second game, slow down the pace a little, and bring back Pyramid-Head.

Amen to that. As for Don's request of someone who's played the games (oh, and Jont's right that 4 wasnt entirely essential, but baytor: seriously? you played it alla way through? by the end, when youre runnin from ghosts and your house is haunted, i thought it had some great moments).

Im pretty much with LL: the acting was only painful a few times. I guess it was long, but i enjoyed it, even the pacing.

The plot took largely from part 1, switching out Harry Mason for the mother, and was very faithful, just tossing in elements from later games and some new things in the same vein as the series - you'll see twisted puzzles, spot-on monsters, and even the main charcters running & panting. Oh, and CJ & MH - i think they just played the songs right off the games, no lie - ive been watching Senshik play 2 & 3 lately so theyre fresh in my head, almost every track in the movie came from a game.

So again, the liberties taken with the plot worked, and this was a cool movie with enough disturbing scenes to have me down to see it again sometime. Im a very biased gamer whose played & loves the series, so i think i took way more from it & followed the odd plot (by its end) way better than those who watched it with me, like mr i-hate-all-these-horor-flicks-jax.

aw man, if youre going for game-likeness, youll be quite pleased. The environments were nailed down pretty early on, and stayed that way almost the whole way through. Lound industustrial noises galore, they even got that "oh-shit-its-switching-to-the-otherwold" siren from part 1 down perfect.

I think LL said they didnt use CG here, if so, im rather impressed...not to say too much, but that same affect i mentioned about part 1, you know, when it seems like the buliding itself changes & hemorrhages? Perfect. if its those details youre concerned about, and not say, acting and dialogues that make you wish somebody'd die son, youre gonna love this thing.

Dont listen to Jax, it was also better than Mario Bros and Wing Commander. It was definitely Strett Fighter league.

And yeah, cause for me, if im laying there in bed that night recalling parts of the movie - something ive no idea why i do, mebbe to induce nightmares - and there's shit stuck in my head, then i was distrubed by it. Offhand, i can think of 3 scenes that fucked with me like that.

You mean it pulls a Manhunt? Cause I was so fucking bored with the first five hours of the game that I just gave up (much like how many people gave up on Manhunt cause it didn't really get good until you reached the abandoned mall.) maybe I should finish the game then, but the dogs and the two headed baby reapers as well as the burning ghosts just didn't do it for me, it was just a bunch of tedious escort missions and I was bored, I do think I should play the first three now. Hopefully this game won't have the same effect on me as Doom (I cannot play any of the Doom games because even with god mode and the sound off I end up running into a room and using all my ammo on an imp and hiding in a corner, I'll admit it, in that sense I'm a pussy, but most other games don't bother me like that.)

man, im so gonna derail this thread for a minute

I wanted to play Manhunt, never got to. And yeah, there's tedious parts where you have to revisit levels, but again, by the later parts, it managed to fuck with me a bit.

If you can somehow play the first 3 (in order, preferrably) do so, its really really worth it. If you cant find or download part 1, make sure to read a plot analysis at gamefaqs or something before playing 3...most folks rightfully choose 2 as their favorite, but i fucking love 3.

Yeah sorry I derailed this thread, I do plan to see Silent Hill as soon as possible, I don't know much story so I'm sure I'll be more confused than the time I came in during the last ten minutes of Memento. It has violence, and that's a language I understand.

I'm pretty sure all the music was taken from the games, which was a little disappointing since I was expecting some new music in the same vain, but for the most part it fit in well enough, although there was a melancholy (or melodramatic depending on your level of cynicism) piano piece from the second game that I think they over used a bit. Akira Yamaoka was credited for his music, but the score was handled by a guy called Jeff Dana, who's job seemingly entailed getting all the Silent Hill soundtracks from amazon.co.jp

It's funny you mentioned Memento, I reckon Christopher Nolan should be brought in to direct the sequel. Actually I think the franchise should only be directed by people called Chris just so people on message boards can try to decipher the significance for ever more. But in any rate I think every sequel should have it's own director, just like the Alien movies, so we can get to see as many different takes on the concept, but I don't think the Alessa story should be revisited the ending of the movie was tidier, but a lot more satisfying than any of the endings in the game.

I wanted to put this theory to the test I was talking to KoS about this after I saw the movie, but it seems I was the only one that saw it. Was Dahlia controlling Pyramid Head. Anna and Dahlia were at the bottom of the steps leading up to the church, Dahlia does some some sort of Devil horn motion with her hand and Pyramid Head appears between them and the church doors, and fucking rips Anna's tits off (the movie was a 15 certificate over here, which begs the question, just what do you have to do to get an 18 cert these days?) Can was Dahlia seen in the church after that, and if so how?

Yeah, sony have decided to show all their preview clips inside a little PsP, there's more here but you'll be better off changing the number in the link above if you want the swfs for fit your browser.

Just finished watching it....

Hmmmmmm. It's VERY tight with the games, which I loved. Obviously it's closest to 1, with a nice blob of 2, and a nice little pinch of 3. For some reason it didn't scare me like the game did. They did get the rusting look down and managed to do a good job fitting the industrial music in there. For the latter the film seemed a bit over the shop. Doesn't drift, sort of bounces.

Silent Hill was alright. I didn't expect much from it though, so I'm not disappointed. The over acting and Optimism from the main chick killed it for me! NOTING IS EVER GOING TO BE OKAY IN SILENT HILL, EVER!!! I just laughed every time Rose kept saying that. >_

The music, background scenery, and the creatures were grade A for awesome. Totally loved it.

I would have liked the movie to leave off with a man holding a letter saying, "Mary, are you really here... in Silent Hill?"

That would have rocked a billion cocks.

Yeah there's CG everywhere, but most of it's good. Apparently all of the majority of the monsters were actors with rubber and prosthetics. I know for certain that Pyramid Head and the nurses were real because I saw them in making of videos and I'm sure most of the other creatures were real people in body suits with CG effects added.
