JunkerSeed
Gin blossoms/sponge show was canceled  but warped tour was fucking great! Nothing but great band after great band. The Bosstones, Ozma, Flogging Molly, Reel Big Fish, MxPx, and no use for a name were all fucking great. Ozma and flogging molly stole the show for me though. Ozma's set rocked because, well, other than them being a great band, it started raining right at the climax of a song and kept on untill their last song finished, too cool. And Flogging molly is just the fucking coolest band in the world. They're an irish punk band with an accordian player and a violinist. Lots of celtic influence, they're just too cool. I'd suggest you download a song of theirs like right now, grab "whats left of the flag." And it poured all day so the whole concert was one big mud pit. Only dissapointment was NOFX, they're a great band, and they rocked when they played their songs.... but they wouldn't shut the fuck up and play them! You get a half hour set at warped tour, so while you dont need to rush through songs, you should actually try and play a few. NOFX was talking through half their set and only played like 5 songs....5 extremely short punk songs. Prolly 15 minutes worth of music in a half hour set, bah. This one was dinghy's first concert (yeah, a rainy, muddy, all day warped tour where we fought our way to the barricade for 7 bands is one hell of a way to introduce someone to concerts) and she loved it, maybe she'll post what she thought. Reverend Jax
Slater Kinney! No there's a band I would feel uncorfortable watching live. Maybe I've been misinformed, but the majority of SK fans are militant lesbians, right? I passed up seeing Ani DiFranco for the fear of being the only guy in a sea of militant lesbians who would jump me for being a man. It's a completely irrational fear, and I regret missing Ani in concert, cause she has some kickass songs (my favs: The Million You Never Made & Fuel), but I can't get over it. Stupid irrational fear! Heartlessbitch
how did i know that jacks was going to make some kind of sexist lilith fair crack after i posted about Slater Kinney.. goddamn stereotypes.. jacks why don't ya go back in yer hole and listen to.. oh what is it that you fags listen to these days? Barbara Streisand? George Michael? Elton John?
JunkerSeed
We sorta caught new found glory at warped, we heard them as we were walking around checking out the booths and stuff, I was never a huge fan. I think "Sincerely me" is a cool song, and they do a fine cover of "the neverending story" I just never listened to em, seen em a buncha times tho, they're from florida so they're always a part of random festivals. Kinney would rock live, other festivals sound cool too, next one up for me, Irish, and Dinghy is tom petty on wednesday, that's gonna be too cool. Reverend Jax
Ohhh, Tom Petty will be sweet I'm sure. the Heartbreakers hae so many good songs, it's sick. They could play a whole two-hour concert with nothing but radio hits that everyone in the audience, not just the die-hard fans, could sing along to. Last dance with Mary Jane, one more chance to kill the pain Have a great time.
The NZA
Yeah, so, Tom Petty was a badass as expected. I hope im nearly that cool at that man's age. My personal highlight was "Learning to Fly", was done perfectly & the piano accompanying made it amazin. Finished strong with "American Girl" and "Freefalling"..not nearly enough time for their many, many hits but even the new stuff off their upcming album was good, especially "Lost Children" I think it was. He promised us we wouldnt hear his stuff on car commercials, hocking coke, or askin us to "fall into the gap". That, and his freestyle of "Gloria" were incredible. Seriously, ya cant find many better words to describe how this guy comes off than just...cool. I wish there were more people like 'im. :frontman:
JunkerSeed
Yeah, Tom petty rocked. Gloria was a definate highlight, and Petty's guitarist was just nuts, lots of cool stuff, improvisation, good set list, and great new material. He certainly is the epitome of cool. Reverend Jax
Gloria has been covered by so many artists. The original version, by Them (Van Morrison's band back in 1965) is great, but other great versions include the 7 minute live version by the Doors, a band with another Morrison on vocals (Jim gets pretty raunchy even by today's standards) and my favorite version, Patti Smith's (she really changes it up ALOT and makes the song her own) great proto-punk version. I'll have to check out Petty's soon.
The NZA
Yeah, do that, i really like what he adds to it. But make sure to find his live version of "Learning to Fly" with the piano accompanying (if ya can), its fastly becomin a favorite song o' mine. Heartlessbitch
i really dig the stone's version of Gloria..i think that's my favorite i've heard so far... have to check out the tom petty version
Reverend Jax
IC, i'll check out the piano version of Learning to Fly soon. the original version is great, so I'm sure the piano version will surpass it. Heartless, if you haven't already, check out the Doors' and Patti Smith's versions of Gloria. I'll chekc out the Stones'. PS If you get Patti Smith's and you start playing it and it doesn't sound anything like the Gloria you know, that's the right one. It doesn't sound like the original version at all until the end. Heartlessbitch
well.. i went to the Unlimited Sunshine Tour Last night and my oh my oh my was it an experience.. to give you some background about the tour.. CAKE put it on and decided to come up with a tour that would be like a soundtrack.. every band was a different genre.. so the opening act..was by far the best (next to cake) i'm not normally a techno enthusiast... (i like some happy hardcore, trance, and atb) and maybe you techno enthusiasts on the board have heard of them.. but there's this techo band/spins/plays accordian and other various instruments from Mexico called Kinky... they kicked so much ass.. not only is it a fun band to watch and hear live..but their sound is unique.. i've never heard anything like it.. so good in fact i bought their CD after the show... not to mention their bass player was hot as hell and one of the coolest motherfuckers i've seen in a while (he came swaggering out in a stinson.. pseudo tight jeans, cowboy boots, aviator specs...and a cig in his mouth..) i was in love he's somewhat the epitome of my perfect guy (physically of course) but i digress... the next act was this emo band called Modest Mouse.. okay again, i'm not a HUGE emo fan i dig juliana theory, thursday, jimmy eat world (old stuff),rufio, and a few other emo bands..but hell they sucked ass.. and what was even more annoying was the fact that all these little emo-heads went crazy.. i'm sorry.. even the lyrics sucked "the world is my ashtray" oh please.. my friends and i were just waiting for the lead singer to break down and cry on stage..by far one of the worse sets of the night. next was De La Soul which was this old school hip hop group remeniscent of run dmc.. they've been around since 1989... i like some rap.. don't get me wrong..but there's only so many times you can say.... "where's the party at? is the party over here? HELLLL YEAH" and there's only so many times you can mix "me, myself and I" over and over again on a loop.. what really sucks is that we were down by the guardrail right up front.. so one of the guys jumps down and starts talking and singing to people up front.. and my friends and i are like "shit..we have to start actin glike we like this shit" but fortunately he didn't come by our side.. close call though next band was this avande gard band called "The Flaming Lips" they are really fun to watch visually... they have guys dressed up in bunny and cheeta suits throwing confetti at the audience.. they have a screen in the back with different clips from japanesse movies, porn and what not.. and the lead singer throws face blood on his face midway through the set.. yes it's very entertaining to watch the props.. but their music kinda sucked.. the highlight of that set.. their rendition of keileigh monogue's "can't get you out of my head" and last but not least..of course the headliner.. CAKE came out.. they were great as usual..but they didn't play as many songs as when i saw them in Davis.. and they didn't come out for an encore which kinda sucked.. definitely the highlights of my night were CAKE and Kinky... we met some of the guys from Kinky after the show.. they gave us a sample cd..but unfortunately my mexican cowboy man wasn't out there... again I am reminded why i am weary of tours (except vans warped tour and lady fest) but all in all it was a fun night, good expereince.. and i have no voice today or energy..and i'm leaving on a jet plane today... i'll be back in a week or so.. have fun kids. Reverend Jax
Wow, I haven;t heard of Rufio in a long time. Anyway, sounds like it was cool. I like some of De La Soul's stuff, but I'm not too surprised to hear they sucked live. Rap/Hip-hop has always seemed like a genre that doesn't work too well live. Kinda seems like they do it only because they have to. Any time I see a rap/hip-hop act on SNL or something it seems so much lamer than the studio version, which are often times lame themselves. I don't know, that's just my impression.
Reverend Jax
So on Rush's Tour for their new album, they aren't just not coming to Miami, they hadn't even annoucned any Florida dates. But worse than that, I come to San Antonio and Rush is in town, and they're playing on the same night as the wedding that I flew out here for! Stupid irony! The NZA
I hear Run DMC put on a helluva show at North Campus (I had work, sadly ) but made the Hard Knock tour few years back: Method Man, Redman, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, DMX etc - twas badass. Anyway, it depends on the artist, not the genre.
JunkerSeed
In case ya haven't heard yet, jack, rush is coming to the mars music amphitheater on 10/11/02. If I were you I'd grab a ticket quick as hell cause that'll sell out if ya want seats. Oh, and dream theater comes to pompano beach tomorrow with joe satriani? You goin? I wanted to but have way too much to do this week, lemme know how that show is, sounds like nothing but a night of insane solos.
Goatboys girl
Great news with the prospect of Bright Eyes and Idlewild doing tours in autumn. I've already got tickets for the Bright Eyes show in London and am looking for Idlewild to announce some other then the Coldplay support slots (you americans can have them next year!) Also the Reading Festival is coming up this weekend so you're bound to get some very long posts from MLB and myself about how that went (for the americans it's a HUGE 3-day festival with the Strokes, Foo Fighters and Prodigy headlining the main stage)
King of Snake
Looks to be plenty of good bands about. I did a bit of looking around and I got the line-up, I didn't get the official site at first so that's why there's some block caps in there. I've put in bold bands that I'd wanna catch, obviously there's gonna be some clashes, act upon recommendations if you want although some go without saying.... Friday 23rd August MAIN STAGE The Strokes - I don't get all the hype, but they're still a decent band. Pulp Jane's Addiction Weezer - the last two singles (Island in the Sun and Keep Fishing) are pretty good, never mind their back catalog. White Stripes - some sound from just drums and guitar. Dandy Warhols Mercury Rev Soundtrack Of Our Lives The Moldy Peaches - goes without saying since MLB recommended them to me first. EVENING SESSION Feeder - SoF saw em live, I'd have gone but for the fact it was a support slot to the Stereophonics. Soulwax Two Many DJ's - can't remember what they clashed with, maybe Prodigy, but I missed em at Witnness. The Breeders - as a Pixies fan I couldn't leave em out The Electric Soft Parade New Found Glory The Vines Guided By Voices Fenix TX The BellRays The Von Bondies Finch THE BOUTIQUE STAGE Aphex Twin - COME TO DADDY!! Lo-Fidelity Allstars U.N.K.L.E. Sounds, Decks ‘n’ Effects - don't think it's DJ Shadow, just James Lavelle using the name... Ladytron Peaches Dot Allison Dog Freq Nasty Luke Vibbert Erol Alkan CARLING STAGE THE POLYPHONIC SPREE - don't believe the hype. BOBBY CONN - Jont swears by him, heard a few songs, not bad. THE REINDEER SECTION CODY CHESNUTT PRINCESS SUPERSTAR BRITISH SEA POWER THE KENNEDY SOUNDTRACK THE DATSUNS INTERPOL THE KILLS LONGWAVE SIMPLE KID PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES ------------------------------------------------ Saturday 24th August MAIN STAGE Foo Fighters - I doubt MLB'll miss em Muse - Good line up on the main stage on this day Ash - ditto! Sum 41 The Hives - ditto!! A - on record they seem poppy but live it's all rock, Nothing is a stormer, ideal festival song Less Than Jake - ditto!!! Andrew WK - should be a laugh at least! "We do what we like and we like what we do!" Vex Red - one of the best new british bands about imho. Sahara Hotnights EVENING SESSION Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - I don't get their popularity, unremarkable songs, unremarkable live. Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness live is something else... Jon Spencer Blues Explosion The Cooper Temple Clause Rival Schools - ...as is Used For Glue. Alec Empire The Icarus Line Goldfinger Midtown The Libertines The Pattern CONCRETE JUNGLE STAGE Sick Of It All Saves The Day - Uuurgh! Face To Face Get Up Kids [spunge] No Use For A Name Bouncing Souls Dashboard Confessional Thursday The Anniversary Hot Rod Circuit Lightyear Jesse James CARLING STAGE IKARA COLT THE PARKINSONS THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY SPAN VENDETTA RED BEN KWELLER THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER CAVE IN THE BEATINGS THE D4 MILLIONAIRE SERAFIN VUE THE COGNITION ----------------------------------------------- Sunday 25th August MAIN STAGE Prodigy - not to be missed! The Offspring Slipknot Incubus NoFX Puddle of Mudd Hundred Reasons - a few good songs. Amen Raging Speedhorn Dillinger Escape Plan - bad, bad band, they supported SoaD, completely incoherent. EVENING SESSION Spiritualized And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead Cornershop Haven Six By Seven Reel Big Fish The Shining Sparta - ex-ATDI, what I've heard so far's been class. Capdown Hoggboy Death Cab For Cutie DANCE STAGE The Streets The Herbaliser Anti Pop Consortium Blade People Under The Stairs Blak Twang FALLACY & FUSION NEW FLESH ANDY C FIRST RATE DJ NOISE DJ MALEY CARLING STAGE THE MUSIC ALPINESTARS EASY WORLD MAXIMUM ROACH MINUTEMAN BIFFY CLYRO HELL IS FOR HEROES - Only know one song but they could be worth catching JETPLANE LANDING - one of the highlights of the early hours of Witnness. DRAGPIPE TRIK TURNER THIS GIRL TETRA SPLENDOUR - again, an MLB recommendation. ---------------------------------------------- This one was on an earlier line-up, they may have pulled out Mars Volta - I only know a couple of songs but they're ex-ATDI, they must be good! On early enough to not clash with anything else I'd expect.
Reverend Jax
Thanks for the Rush date announcement, Junker. I actually have an extra ticket to DT and Joe Satriani. I was planning on selling it outside the show but if you want it, I'll let you have it for practically nothing, plus give you a ride there. I know you said you have lots to do, but maybe you can squeeze it in. I'll PM you this to make sure you hear this from me since it's tomorrow.
Jesi
's a helluva lineup. I admit to not ever hearing of half those bands, but if I were going, along with most of the highlighted bands up there, I'd also love to see Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Incubus, & Puddle of Mudd. But that's just me
Reverend Jax
Here we are: Review of Joe Satriani/Dream Theater with Specil Guest King's X concert Whoa! that is what I'm reduced to. For those of you unaware of who any or all of the three bands listed are. Joe Satriani is on the worlds greatest and highly respected guitar virtuosos. He does completely instrumental songs (exclusively I believe). That means his songs don't have bridges of solos, his songs ARE bridges and solos. Very jazzy, great stuff. Check out the songs Satch Boogie and Cool Number 9. King's X is a Texas-based band that is kinda metal, but not really, but sound great. Dream Theater is the reason I went to the concert. There are progressive metal. The best way to imagine them is to start with Metallica (Master of Puppets era), take away James Hetfield's voice and add an operatically trained tenor, add keyboards and far more musical variety. You end up with a weird mix of Metallica, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but also completely unique. It was Dream Theater that truely blew mw away. They mixed it up with two songs of their 1992 break through album, Images and Words, one of their 1994 and 1997 albums each, and the rest was from their 1999 concept album, Scenes From A Memory and their 2002 double album, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance. there is not feeling in the world greater than singing along with hundreds of people to every song of a band that most people you know have never heard of. What made my evening was catching drummer Mike Portney's drumstick (they drumset was so freaking huge, it had like 25 cymballs and a gong). This drumstick is my new most prized posession. I was right up front, squeezed in around be people like sardins. by the last 10 minutes of the show I was getting a heat stroke, but stayed til the end. Afterwards lots of water and the pleasant scent on second-hand pot smoke helped me feel alot better. As I drove back from Pompano Beach, I turned on the radio to listen to music that nearly made me go into a coma by comparision. But hey, the best music in the world isn't really for the masses I guess.
Reverend Jax
I also forgot to mention this. In the middle of a long instrumental section of one of DT's songs, they brought out a soccer ball and started kicking it around and head-butting it to each other., all while playign their instruments (and playing them damn well). They even passed it to the drummer and the keyboardist a few times. These guys are freakishly good.
