Phantasy Star Universe Announced

Will be available on Xbox 360.

posted by Stephen Coleman

April 20, 2006 - SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced that Phantasy Star&153; Universe will be available on the Xbox 360&153;. Scheduled for release in Fall 2006, the highly-anticipated role playing game (RPG) will release on multiple platforms including the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system and PC. Phantasy Star Universe offers two complete RPG experiences - a single-player action adventure spanning multiple planets, and a robust online multiplayer component that will support Xbox Live®.

Since its humble beginnings in 1988, Phantasy Star has revolutionized the RPG genre by creating new standards through innovative gameplay and online capability. Phantasy Star Universe offers a compelling story, both offline and online, that rebuilds the foundation of role-playing games with stunning cut scenes, sharply drawn personalities, and a cohesive narrative. This game revitalizes the Phantasy Star brand heritage while staying true to its roots.

"The reinvigoration of this beloved franchise on the Xbox 360 signifies another step for SEGA towards next-gen leadership," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Entertainment Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "Phantasy Star has a rich history, and now with Phantasy Star Universe in support of the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, gamers can enjoy a fantasy role-playing experience of unprecedented depth both online with their friends, and offline in the robust single-player game."

Developed by SEGA Studios, Phantasy Star Universe offers long-time fans the single-player experience they have been clamoring for. The solo adventure features more than 40 hours of gameplay, an emotionally engaging story, stunning cut scenes, and a strong cast of characters with very distinctive personalities. The title's hero is Ethan Waber, a 17-year old cadet who begins his epic journey by first rescuing his sister at the GUARDIANS, a colony under siege by mysterious life forms known as THE SEED.

In Online Mode, players are given the opportunity to create their own characters from a range of races, as they explore all three planets in the Gurhal system. Fans can travel with their friends as a squad of six adventurers, enter urban sprawls teeming with hundreds of other players, and build their avatars into powerful warriors.

Go there

May 4, 2006 - Phantasy Star is an interesting universe and one of the only online RPGs to incorporate a heavy action element. Sure, there's games like PlanetSide and Neocron for the PC, but swords and sorcery usually don't get the hack and slash treatment when entering the online space. While the action isn't exactly God of War, it's definitely more personally involving than anything like EverQuest where hitting the A button and sitting back to watch the action isn't unheard of. We had the chance to get a look at some of the action at SEGA's pre-E3 event and learned that Phantasy Star fans should instantly recognize this newest addition to the franchise.

As with Phantasy Star Online, PSU will ship with both single and online multiplayer. Unlike PSO, this newest game will put a lot more focus on creating a fulfilling single player game for those that don't need or necessarily want to get online with the game. The development team has decided to emphasize the single player story this time around with a large cast of characters that actually develop enough that players can really care about them.

From what we saw in the presentation at SEGA's pre-E3 event, a lot of effort is going into creating some cinematic cutscenes to build on these character interactions. SEGA is adding even more by including voice acting for the first time in any Phantasy Star game. Personality breeds attachment. Hopefully fans will find the additions fun and worth the developers' time.

The story quests of the single player game will bring players to several different planets occupied by the different races of humans like the CAST, the Newmans, and the Beasts. Each of the planets is settled by one particular type of person as their planets are suited to their personalities and physiology.

Along with the different races, each planet will contain new challenges and very different monsters. These include some rather large boss creatures for players to stand toe to toe with in some epic battles.

The single player game will last for around 35-40 hours and have a self-contained story. When players decide to enter the multiplayer arena, they'll find the story from the single player game continuing on a bit even though players will have to choose new characters to build up as their own in the online space.

As fans will remember fondly and perspective fans will want to know, Phantasy Star Universe is an action oriented RPG. The combat is all in real-time and challenges players to fight with a bunch of different weapons, skills, and magic all of which can be changed around on the fly. The same fast-paced combat is back but has been improved as well for more moves and even will allow players to dual-wield weapons. It's also possible to switch into first-person mode when fighting with a ranged weapon that requires a bit more aiming. It's especially useful when fighting enemies with flight.

When heading off into the instanced zones to fight, players can take up to five of their friends with them to battle it out with the planet's monster population and complete quests. That's two more players than were allowed to travel together in PSO so fans should be happy about that as well.

Like most online games nowadays, Phantasy Star Universe will strive to allow players a level of customization that provides enough selection to feel unique in a crowded game space. While there are undoubtedly going to be some clones walking around, SEGA is hoping that it's a much smaller number than in the past.

There's still a bit of work to be done here. The art selection is definitely colorful and some of the effects are well done but the animation and lip-synching definitely needs to be tightened up a bit. Thankfully there's plenty of time to make necessary adjustments. Phantasy Star Universe is due out in October on PC and PS2 and will follow shortly thereafter on the Xbox 360.

Where did you hear this, I thought trilogy was cencelled for the PS2. The PS2 trilogy was supposed to have been 1,2, and 4. This was announced for the US like 3 years ago, just after the PS1 remake hit, problem was, PS2 didn't come out till early last year, and there is currently no word on PSIV.

The imports are cheap as fuck, but I haven't played them yet as I need to mod the PS2 or some shit. Still here's hopin'.

MASSIVE SPOILERS for PS2 BELOW

Still, as much as I'd love to believe that PSTrilogy will be out by the end of the year it isn't bloody likely, PS4 isn't even announced in Japan yet. I am hoping though. I really want a good translation because of all the extra story shit that is added in.

Sorry my bad. I forgot to take that out. Didn't they release PS 1-3 on the gameboy or is that PS part of another Universe.

...damn.

and now bishop got me all hyped on all that extra shit, storyline needed more charactrization & background, that'd be awesome. Plus, ive forever been a fan of PS IV's "Talk" feature, not just for charcter (a la Luner, or even FF IX) but its a great catchup when you have to leave the game alone for a week or so, and need to remember where you were last.

Artbooks, PS Sound Collection, plot details...this series has so much room for some great extras. I almost wish theyd give it a graphic update while theyre at it, and uh, make PS II less hard while theyre at it.

PS Collection for GBA were direct ports of the Genesis games. It had PS1, 2 and 3, which kinda didn't make sense because 3 didn't tie in much with the first two and PS4 was the last in the trilogy. Still, they weren't half bad, and a great way to play them on the go. I'd grab it if you haven't played any Phantasy Stars as it lets you play 1 and 2 which were far ahead of their time.

eh, ill hold out for remakes.

anyone interested, i got a torrent for the closed beta of this game, in case you wanna see how its comin.

The Beta is up on XBL, it's will be running until wednesday, but since microsoft is shutting down XBL on tuesday for maintenance it will run until midnight tuesday..

well, it comes out in about 2 weeks or so, doesnt it? Might be sooner. Here's to hoping the single player's more fun than PSO's was, cause thats what im gonna be on for a while to come.

that's funny, i kinda remember that happening at points with PSO on the dreamcast. you think sega'dve learned, but then again, that's what these betas are for.

Phantasy Star Universe is selling for $19.99 on Amazon.com right now. I just grabbed it along with a wireless headset for what would have been the regular price of the game. I think the PS2 one is also going for cheap. You all might want to check it out.

you played it yet, bish? beyond the demo? Cause after Newt's reaction, im wondering if i was the only one enjoying it...im kinda lost last i played it tho.

If you have this for XBox(360? dunno if I have to clarify that or not...), cj would be super down for playing with you (or anyone) on XBL. His gamer thing is Evermalice, as is his character's name. We have the headset and all that fun shit, and he's really hardcore into PSU right now.

Cool, I'll look him up once I get the game.

Hooray! I'm also thinking about playing this one, prolly just share the same account and I'll play while he's at work or something.
