The NZA Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 Exactly, the ending I would have loved as I've said before is the ending to y the last man (which by the way I came up with before y was written) i dont follow - how would you do the Y ending in Preacher? different books, different events. That was just part of tha ball of crap that was the ending. And while we're bitching, why did God save Jesse after he fell outta the plane? Why not let him die and let that be the end of it. baytor's a cunt. but he's right about the wanking. preacher's god made a point to show how little he valued life; he toyed with it to make a point. this callousness was shown early on with Tulip by "Until the End of the World" and followed suit towards the end - if it feels like an ex machina, its a least a consistent one. skeet nailed it on the head: why make a being like genesis, more powerful than yourself? its what he did in this universe. though if cass didnt come back, i think woulda been ok with that ending too. skeet also pointed out about the biggest inconsistency for me, too. a zombie god wouldve survived? leave dillon alone!!
alive she cried Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 i dont follow - how would you do the Y ending in Preacher? different books, different events. Blow Tulips brains out
crimsonfire Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 There's more than just us happy with the ending to Preacher right? Crim- quit fronting you goddamned paper fanboy. I've been brandishing my deluxe HC of the boys at you for weeks & all you can do is cluck & tsk & say, 'nono, I'da rather read a real book' at which time you pick up some Metallica Biography bookmarked with MC2 issues of Spidergirl. Why must you always twist my words? I was full on interested in The Boys and said yes I would get round to reading it. There was not a hint of clucking nor tsking. As for the Metallica Spidergirl stuff there....um....I'm really not sure where to begin. and you couldnt have brandished it more than like 5 or 6 times...and that was all in the same day.
Jables Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 To his credit, kids, he DID finally read WE3, so it's a start. Relating to Boys talk, I see they've just wrapped up 'We've got to go now' which apparently promises status quo-shattering changes. I think I dropped off right before this G-men arc everyone discusses(I gotta go through my back issues & see), and wait for all that I haven't read to trade.
The NZA Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 yeah, they werent kidding - the end to "We gotta go now" was balls-out, and upped the book's ante. im still with baytor here, though - ok, youve got the plot going in some interesting directions, im definitely on board. now sell me on some of the characters with the half or so the book's got left, garth.
Jables Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Can't believe we're already halfway through. Time's flown, but then, the book did go bi-monthly for a period, yeah?
The NZA Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 hell, if you'll recall, it got shit-canned for a bit by DC, didnt it? we're lucky its still running. its just - some series, i know from early on i want in trade (lone wolf), some have a clincher as they go on that really seals the deal (preacher), and some, i just gotta see how the end to be completely sold (Y: last man). this one, im waiting for that clincher, that moment of great character & plot that Ennis has delivered a few times now, and its not happened yet but ill know it when i see it. until then, its enjoyable, but so was rifle brigade and at least a baker's dozen of other ennis books ive read. for those wondering, in preacher it was Jesse vs Jody, and in Hitman, it was Tommy holding his best friend as the guy died, guy's saying "i was a real tough guy, tommy, i wouldnt talk!" and tommy's choking back and says "...i wish you'dve sang like a goddamn canary."
Jables Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Yeah DC canned it, but it only took a month or two to be picked up by Dynamite. Pretty sure Dynamite went bimonthly for a stint.
Iambaytor Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Yeah Dynamite picked it up pretty quick, probably due to the fact that they're desperate for good material as they'll publish literally anything.
Jables Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 All caught up, somehow I was expecting someone to die, so a little disappointed. Woulda loved to have seen 'em take on that many supes at once though . Really anoying thing about this book is the artist swap.
The NZA Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 you can see baytor's concern about the lack of character-building though, yeah? I still dont think most Hitman arcs were strong with it either, but id expected more by now. and i know what you're saying about the artists, i keep meaning to check in by darick robertson's forum and ask what the deal was there. about when did the swap go down, anyway? i forget.
alive she cried Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 for those wondering, in preacher it was Jesse vs Jody, and in Hitman, it was Tommy holding his best friend as the guy died, guy's saying "i was a real tough guy, tommy, i wouldnt talk!" and tommy's choking back and says "...i wish you'dve sang like a goddamn canary." So I highlight the the black and see you talking about Preacher, cool I can read all of this spoiler but then BAM Hitman ruined, thanks nick
The NZA Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 aw cmon, its been half-done in trade for years! if it makes you feel better, i didnt name the other dude, and yeah, that shit goes down really early. there's a few key emotional moments i didnt point to, but yeah, you should check out the book, one way or another.

I'll get around to it eventually just after I've read every non ruined good book. Actually I'm on book 5 of 100 bullets wanna ruin that?
The NZA Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 sure thing! the ending's rushed, and some people who some of us wanted to come back didnt come back after being offed halfway through the series by that asshole guy. also, "Mr. Blue" is Captain America.
Jables Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 you can see baytor's concern about the lack of character-building though, yeah? I still dont think most Hitman arcs were strong with it either, but id expected more by now. and i know what you're saying about the artists, i keep meaning to check in by darick robertson's forum and ask what the deal was there. about when did the swap go down, anyway? i forget. Couple of alternating issues within the We Gotta Go Now arc. The most frustrating part is, the two sole reasons compelling me to stick with this book at all is Billy V The Homelander & Annie & Hughie , and that Higgins guy had Annie looking like Pamela fucking Lee. Not to sound like a perve or whatever, but Robertson has a more realistic approach to the form of his characters(while still flattering though), and such a sweet moment like the two of 'em in the park coulda done with that touch. Regarding the first reason listed that I remain on board, what's up with the Homelander's origin? Crossing that with Billy's motivation has me thinking that maybe Vought American V'd Billy's kid in the womb? He tears his way out killing Billy's wife, maybe Homelander's infact his kid but he tells the rape story to not seem so compromised. Tell me that's not something Ellis'd relish in dropping 3 issues from the end? Coming back to the earlier point of it now being published by Dynamite, at least we never have to worry about it being cancelled again, eh?
Iambaytor Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Coming back to the earlier point of it now being published by Dynamite, at least we never have to worry about it being cancelled again, eh? Christ no, Dynamite is the UPN of comic companies. They're the skanky girl in the class, they'll suck anybody's cock just so long as it means somebody will pay attention to them. If you don't believe me then check their scattershot method of nabbing every popular property that nobody else has claimed and bastardizing it (Army of Darkness, The Lone Ranger, Painkiller Jane just to name a few)
Jables Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Oh trust me, I know. I buy the fucking single issues wherein the comics ends about halfway through the book, to be followed by fullpage ad after ad for what I'm pretty sure is their entire bloody back catalogue. I think the only non-liscensed property they have is Project: Superpowers, a truly terrible-looking Alex Ross vehicle. Still, from memory Dark Horse mostly carved out it's niche(and still does in between Hellboy & The Goon books) schilling Predator & Star Wars books left right & centre. Admittedly they weren't as shameless about it in the early days though.
Iambaytor Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Dark Horse had a few good series they created: The Mask for example. And at very least the Star Wars and Predator books were well written.
Jables Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I couldn't comment on any of the Dynamite properties because I'd prolly never give 'em the time of day.
The NZA Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 Hey, Lone Ranger's supposed to be pretty good. and for what its worth, Dark Horse is my current # 2, right after Marvel - they're fucking awesome.
Iambaytor Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Dark Horse is the shit, though some of their superhero properties from the 90s were absolute shit. I read The Mask World Tour (a book that pits the mask against their superhero universe) and holy hell every page was sheer pain. And while the Long Ranger book doesn't have the "bad fanfiction" vibe that most dynamite comics have, well, dammit it tries!
Iambaytor Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 So the art's all over the place now, John McCrea did some (seeing those large overdetailed hands warmed the cockles of my heart, even if the style doesn't lend itself to the story like it did with Hitman), then Jacen Burrows (He's apparently Ennis' new Steve Dillon), and now Darrick Robertson's back. Please, Christ, don't let Steve Dillon draw an issue. On another note, I've been trying to nail down imaginary casting and I keep coming back to the same person for Butcher no matter how much I try and push it away. Gordan Ramsey. The thing with this suggestion is you immediately reject it because it sounds like shit, but it just keeps creeping back into your mind and making you think it would. I honestly think it could work. Oh well, the movie license will probably run out soon (seeing as they actually seem to be wanting to wait for the series to end before making the movie on this one) and it wont even matter.
Jables Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Has this book picked up at all? I dropped off a while ago again, after catching up and it still really wasn't doing anything.
