The Opening Weekend Game!

OK, so here's my idea a new game. I'll try to moderate and keep score...

Every week, between Monday and Thursday, I will post the previous weekend's top ten box office films with their ranking, their previous week's ranking (if applicable), the movies' takes for that weekend, and number of weeks released.

I will also post the coming weekends new releases.

The game will be to guess the top five for the weekend, and guess the take for the #1 film.

For the top 5, the scoring will be as follows (you only score for the highest one of these descriction that fits you):

10 points for guessing the right 5 films in the right order.

8 points for guessing the top 3 correctly int eh right order.

6 points for guessing the 5 films right in the wrong order.

4 points for getting the right films with one out of place.

Getting the weekend revenue for the top film of the weekend within 10% doubles the score.

If thsi sounds totally lame, you understand the rules perfectly, so let's move forward. Here's the numbers from last weekend:

Rank / Rank last week / Title / # Weeks in Release / Weekend Gross

1 /new/ Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest / 1 / $135.6M

2 / 1 / Superman Returns / 2 / $21.8M

3 / 2 / The Devil Wears Prada / 2 / $15M

4 / 3 / Click / 3 / $11.9M

5 / 4 / Cars / 5 / $10.7M

6 / 5 / Nacho Libre / 4 /$3.3M

7 / 6 / The Lake House / 4 / $2.9M

8 / 7 / The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift / 4 / $2.5M

9 / 8 / Waist Deep / 3 / $1.9M

10 / 9 / The Break-Up / 6 / $1.6M

And this week we have the follow wide release debuting:

Little Man

You, Me, & Dupree

So now you guess next week's top 5 only, and only the number one film's gross. I'm going with

1. Pirates $50

2. Little Man

3. You, Me, & Dupree

4. Superman

5. The Devil Wears Prada

Any questions?

This is more akin to the Trivia Challenge, only there's no way to cheat.

And this game is lame for sure, but it doesn't make you gay like zombie games do. Werewolves are way cooler.

OK, so the numbers are in and

The top five movie were int eh exact order I forecasted, but Pirates grossed 62.2%, out my the 10% range to double my score.

10 points for me, and nobody else played. I'll give it one moer week and if no one else plays, I'll retire this ill-conceived idea of a game.

This week, major releases include:

Clerks II

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water

Last week's were

1 / 1 / Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest / 2 / $62.2M

2 / new / Little Man / 1 / $21.7M

3 / new / You, Me and Dupree / 1 / $21.3M

4 / 2 / Superman Returns / 3 / $11.6M

5 / 3 / The Devil Wears Prada / 3 / $10.5M

6 / 5 / Cars / 6 / $7.5M

7 / 4 / Click / 4 / $7M

8 / 7 / The Lake House / 5 / $1.6M

9 / 6 / Nacho Libre / 5 / $1.5M

10 / 19 / A Scanner Darkly / 2 / $1.2M

A Scanner Darkly jumped up from a very limited release, and is making it way on to even more screens this coming weekend. Keep that in mind, as in might creep into the top 5. A Kevin Smith movie and an M. Night Shyamalan movie are not going to make guess this weekend's top 5 very easy. Despite his cult following, no Kevin Smith movie has ever grossed over $30M in theaters total (not opening weeking, that's entire run). If you don't take that into consideration, you'll likely overestimate Clerk II's mainstream appeal. And M. Night Shyamalan, well, Signs was the #1 movie during the summer for 6 straight weeks. My gut tells me this one won't take the top spot, but the history speaks volumes for it's case.
