Today, 03:12 PM Guest Registering... Today, 03:11 PM I wanna say I hope these are real people, but 4 outta 5 are prolly spammers :( unless it's the same person???
The NZA Posted November 19, 2006 Author Posted November 19, 2006 Daaaamn. that's a lot of spammers. Do I have the option to delete them? or just tuck their posts away to crapshack? that's one of the projects for this place i plan to undertake over the christmas break, giving some limited admin access to you & jax. for now tho, yeah, keep crap shacking their garbage, its helpful. its only annoyed me that recently theyve actually verified their emails and posted. my other option, again, is to not let anyone post until i give them the ok, but id rather not do that, even if i was here more often. again, next version of this board's software is supposed to make that wavy box of text & numbers harder for bots, we'll see how well that works.
Jumbie Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 How did Jax get here??? Can you say, 'fellatio'? How about 'analingus'?
The NZA Posted November 26, 2006 Author Posted November 26, 2006 this is gettin out of hand...i go to bed, wake up and there's 4 of them, and worse yet 2 get through. im gonna start filing complaints with the domain emails/IP abuse networks i can find pretaining to them. much love to Jax, 2T, MH, nanno, etc on helping me get rid of this crap...the "one thread to bind them" idea was class, 2T.
Lycaon Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 "One thread to bind them." That's fucking great.
The NZA Posted November 26, 2006 Author Posted November 26, 2006 incidentally, for those interested: -about half our spammers come from here, which is funny cause they advertise something about paying you if your email gets spammed there, mebbe cause they house all the spammers already, i dunno. For what its worth, they rarely pass email verfication. @web.de, however, consistently does these days, and im interested in seeing if i can complian to them somehow about that, ive got a frequent flyer or two written down, and have even kept IP's on a few, like that one who keeps getting in to post britneykake. Aside from write to their abuse-emails from their IP WHOIS, i dont know what else can be done yet.
The NZA Posted November 27, 2006 Author Posted November 27, 2006 right, so after banning 40+ IP's, i was running low on ideas, contacted invision and they offered this: from now on, new members will be in the "voyeur" catergory and will join the Jr Members group after 2 posts. While in said group, their new topics will be moderated, at least in town square where they seem to be going - meaning, super mods like MH and Jax, as well as mods of that corner like 2T, will prolly (i havent seen it yet, natch) have to approve of a new topic from people in that group before its visible - this should keep them from dropping shit all over Town Square, and hold them off until im around and can properly ban them. This shouldnt affect most of you, but if it does for whatever reason, let me know...im hoping this works.
The NZA Posted November 27, 2006 Author Posted November 27, 2006 We'll see...hopefully, cause like i said, its just getting worse. Oh, and i just figured out how to turn HTML on for us, as well as our current bbc code, so im enabling that, for anyone who wanted to use it, put up flash shit etc. ps 5,006 spam mails for hondosbar.com in the last month alone.
Jumbie Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 Just make sure you explain the policy of voyeur mode to the newbies clearly so the understand why and dont get discouraged
The NZA Posted November 27, 2006 Author Posted November 27, 2006 well, yeah. thing is, if newbies post replies or post new topics in any of the non-town square forums, theyll be fine: its just new topics in Town Square that await moderator approval. Again, as of their 3rd post this isnt the case. I could spell it out in our registration form, or in the FAQ, or both, if you think itd help for those that apply.
The NZA Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 20 spammers in under a day, almost half got through. Id say its nearing an epidemic, and i dont know that we can keep up with it. so its done, everyone shouldve noticed no spam posts yesterday, despite the "top 5 new members" looking like zombies at the gates. Its an ongoing experiment, but currnetly, new members cannot make new topics in Town Square until they have 2 posts under their belt, i have it set so all new topics go to a "moderation queve" that ive honestly yet to find. iamnotaspammer brought to my attention that this voyeur group didnt have permission to do much else either; that's been fixed. im debating not allowing new topics in other forums, as one dick spammer posted everywhere, but that's a rarity so far and again, im trying for the least restrictive measures to keep these assholes at bay. My biggest concern is somehow deleting/blocking entry for an actual new member, so im trying my best not to do that. If this worsens (as in, they somehow start making topics in other places, tho im hoping that's unlikely as theyre just bots), ill either have to a) not allow new toipcs in other forums by newbies, or b) not allow anyone in till i approve of them, which i still think is the easier issue, once i have it setup so Jax, MH as well as myself can approve or ban. Im down for comments & suggestions here, as ever.

You need to be careful with the HTML thing. Spammers could inject code into posts launching virus / trojan attacks. It happens all the time (astalavista.box.sk, andr.net for example)
The NZA Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 i didnt think about that. well, ive disabled HTML for voyeurs, so theoretically, they shouldnt get the chance to use it. any other precautions you recommend?
Ganny McVagflaps Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 Why don't we let them in sports. Lord knows they're needed to spice that arse-pit up.
The NZA Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 that'd make sense, we had one bodybuliding one yesterday that wanted to push horse stereroids or somethin. but thing is, theyre all about town square, otherwise theyd already post in there. youre not seeing this invisible moderation queve over there that im not, are you 2T?

Shit! But I like the HTML thing. I can even post youtube videos now. Could we maybe just have it as a thing you get with a certain larger amount of posts, kinda like changing your title, or making a group?
The NZA Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 well, where were at now, im not letting newbies (voyeurs) post HTML, everyone else can until proven otherwise, unless Chief's got ideas. But at the least, member groups with trusted members, ill leave it on, it was prolly overdue.
Lycaon Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 Yeah, that's what I meant. How do they "prove themselves" though?
The NZA Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 They leave the voyeur group on their 3rd post, then theyre a jr member (regular). if it gets bad, ill start restricting it to sr members and up (100+ posts).
Lycaon Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 If its as dangerous as BigChiefSlapaho said, should it start off as a senior member thing?
