A few things I've watched

Howl

Pretty cool werewolf flick. Werewolves on a train with some influence from Evil Dead and Shaun of the Dead. At first I wasn't too hot on the wolf designs (a little too human for my taste), but they grow on you and it's a fun little horror movie.

The Last Shift

Meh. It's about a rookie cop watching an abandoned police station. It kinda sucked. It had some creepy imagery at some places. It's one of those that if it was released like 20 years ago it would have gotten all this acclaim. It does a bunch of stuff that's been seen before. Still, coulda been worse.

Rampage: Capital Punishment

SHw6axD.jpg

Shitty Uwe Boll movie! Haven't watched one of these in awhile. I actually kinda liked the first one. I'd say it's his best made movie. This one though, while still competently made, was just a bunch of speeches on how the rich control the world and everyone needs to die. I don't feel like it was made ironically. Almost like if one of my conspiracy crazy friends decided to make a movie or something. Not good.

Bury The Ex

This was fun! I was surprised to see Joe Dante's name on this one, and that Anton Yelchin was in it. It's got some pretty funny moments, but probably could have been taken to crazier places. It's not bad though, and really shows that Anton Yelchin was a damn fine actor. His relatability and charm basically carried this movie and it's a shame that he isn't around to go further. I gotta see Green Room.

The Purge: Election Year

The Purge is one weird horror franchise for a few reasons. One is that it manages to not get worse with each entry. Also it's not really a horror franchise at this point. I feel like the first one was, but the last two went to thriller and now action movie. This one wasn't terrible and manages not to hit you over the head with the political stuff. I mean, it's in your face about it, but it's not smug or trying to be anything more than a movie about one horrible nght. I look forward to more of these, and, I think I mentioned it before, would actually really like to see an anthology TV series of it.

Damn, axels bringing back the pics with posts!

Burying the Ex & Green Room are on on my to see lists for this summer, too axels. Sadly, I did not enjoy the third Purge as much as you. Purge 3 was slightly less disappointing than I expected. I only went to see it b/c I treated a friend for her birthday. Grillo was the only thing I was really looking forward to in this film as he was the best thing about Purge 2, but he was sadly underused here. They focused a little more on these New Founding Fathers (Golly, for a buncha religious types they do like to swear.) which revealed little more than they were rich old white people that had a warped sense of religion. I would've liked a bit mor eon how this new America is run and why it took 25 years for a candidate to finally challenge their power on the nation. Also, they definitely relied way too much on what was established in the previous two films to carry this one--direction waffled from lazy to terrible for most of the scenes. It was good to see Elizabeth Mitchell again as I don't think I've seen her in anything since that V remake with Mrs. Jim Gordon a while back. The deli owner played by Mykelti Williamson, aka Bubba Gump, aka Limehouse from Justified, had the most well rounded character in the film and was a favorite of the crowd we saw the film with tonight.

Thats a fair review. And really better than what most third horror installments get haha.

Im wondering why the election took place in May.

I think a good continuation would be like The Purge: Year One. Half the movie would be a good political thriller then the second half the carnage happens. I feel like they area bit too afraid to take it to the dark places they can, though I am glad they havent turned it into Saw/Hostel torture porn that it can so easily become.

Jeeeezus fucking Christ. Ok, I've been wanting to see this for awhile. I've tried a few times, but kept getting sidetracked. Finally got to it last night... and goddamn is it hard to watch. It's very unnerving and has alot of good horror cringe to it. I have some criticisms, but that would be a bit spoilery here. Totally worth the watch though.

This is on my list of movies to watch this summer! Can you elaborate on the cringe in a totally non-specific way? Haha! Like is it gross, jump-scarey, just plain disturbing?

Aaaand just finished Green Room. Has some good dark humor in it, and I was suprised to find out the director is the same as Murder Party. I was kinda hoping they'd give Patrick Stewart more to do though. All in all it was pretty good!

Axels, yeah, the biggest setback for the Purge series has been the writing and directing. All three films had decent premises and solid lead performers. I think it could work as a 10 episode drama series as a Year Zero or Year One type of show if in the hands of a very good writer. I'd want to see more how these wealthy New Founding Fathers take control of the government and the first Purge Night happen towards the end or at the very end of the series. I think they could do a few episodes about what happens to different characters on the same Purge Night. However, I don't think I'd want to watch 10 episodes that covered one Purge Night.

If you're a Lonely Island or Samberg fan you should dig this. If you haven't seen the trailer yet then skip it b/c as with most comedies they put the best jokes in the trailer. It has a really solid first act and begins to waffle towards the end of the second act and continues to do so for the rest of the film except for the ending is scene, which is pretty great. Be forewarned though, Panch as there is a sad fate for a turtle in this one.

So my mom and I have had a really rough couple of weeks and wanted to get out and get our mind off stuff. We picked this movie at random because it was a comedy not aimed at children and I like Kevin Hart. I didn't expect much at all but ended up LOVING it!

It's a dumb movie for sure. The plot is implausible and predictable, but it has nonstop laughs, so much so that my sides hurt from laughing and mom was wiping away tears as we walked out. You have to be a fan of Kevin Hart since it's just Kevin being Kevin the whole time. But man, The Rock really surprised me. He was just so damn lovable here.

It's not something I'd recommend paying theater prices for, but if it's on cable or a cheap redbox rental and you're having a bad day, this will cheer you up!

^Yeah that does look like a decent dumb but funny movie. I will definitely see it.

Room

I was putting this one off because I heard the premise and it seemed really depressing. It's definitely emotional, but ultimately uplifting. Brie Larson got the Oscar, and she did a damn good job, but this little boy Jacob Tremblay absolutely slayed it as her son. The direction and music was also top notch. It's so great when an indie drama can actually live up tot he hype. I highly recommend this one, Hondo's.

YES!! Room isn't an easy watch but it's riveting. And Jacob will absolutely blow you away with his performance!

I just saw this and it it was great. Like you wrote, redonkulous dumb plot, but it was a damned fun movie. Good laughs and decent action mixed in. And those cameos!

Hardcore Henry. It was alright. The first person gimmick does get a bit tiring, but it also does get better as the film goes with the stunts they do. It's just a shame because it stays kind of stale, because by the end they do some cool tricks, but you're kinda just ready for it to be over. I think if it was shot conventianally it would have been a lot more successful in its execution, and would have felt like Shoot em Up on steroids. Fun effort though with some good gags and humor. Worth a rental I'd say.

^I was all ready to buy my ticket to see this in the theater when my friend talked me out of it last minute. I still remember the headache shakey-cam gave me backin the day when I watched Cloverfield in the theater. So I decided to wait for a smaller screen.

Saw Legend of Tarzan in IMAX 3D today and it was disappointing. I hope Joker & Harley have better chemistry than Jane & Tarzan. I'm putting the weight of this lack of sizzle on Tarzan though, as while he looked the part with his jungle swinggin' six pack, he just didn't really convey power. But Tarzan's casting wasn't the only spotty thing on this film. The action and CGI were rather meh, too. Djimon Huntsu had a small but menacing roll that made me wish Marvel cast him as T'challa. (Maybe he will show up in a flashback as a previous incarnation?) Christof Waltz & Sam Jackson were also good in their supporting rolls. Waltz really is getting typecast as the silent, menacing, powerful type. I don't mind though as he's damn good at it.

I watched the Batman v Superman Extended cut on bluray. I dug the film as a whole more the second time around. Special features were good but there were some major gaps. Wonder WOman got the best featurette by far. It was over 20 minutes and a fairly comprehensive history of the character. Batmobile and Batcave also got about 15 minutes each. Then Supes, WW, & Bats each got a short 6 minute profile of their characters as portrayed in the new DCCU. Finally there was a much too short look at Lex Luthor, a nice little featurette on comic book inspiration for the concept of BvS, and info on an organization trying to increase the dwindling bat population in North America. No info at all on the Batwing, training of Batfleck, the script development, or a general documentary with scene breakdowns or SFX like you get with most blockbuster type films though.

I had Katherine watch Pete's Dragon with me. She's never seen it and it's been a very long time since I've seen it. It isn't nearly as endearing as I remember it being. Kinda disappointing actually.

Damn. Sorry to hear ol' Elliot and his Pasamaquady flaming apples didn't entertain you. (Even as a kid that confused the hell outta me. How is a dragon toasted apple something you'd get so damn excited about. Baked apples are delicious, but that's covered in sugar and cinnamon. I digress.) I mentioned it before, but I watched the hell outta that as a kid. I've been itching to get it and Bedknobs & Broomsticks on bluray ever since I heard of the PD remake. Edited by Mr. Hakujin

Finally watched Bone Tomahawk. That last act is something else. I could have done with some music though. I liked what they did with keeping it silent throughout the movie, but I'd love to see what an effective score could have done here. Reminded me of Ravenous without going over the top or cartoony (even then it would have been cool). Baytor you were right about Matthew Fox too. That dude needs more moments to shine like he did here instead of being remembered as the Lost guy.

And shit, I didn't even recognize Richard Jenkins. The whole time I'm thinking "This old guy is hilarious and reminds me of the dude from Cabin in the Woods for some reason". Lo and Behold.
