Reverend Jax Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I saw Little Miss Sunshine last night. I know Lindsay was excited about this one, and chances are a few others here are too. This is a movie about a family road trip to California for a child beauty pagent. The characters are all unique and fleshed out, and their relationships after very believable. Steve Carell is surprisingly accessible as a nonflaboyently gay depressed Proust Scholar. Greg Kinnear is believable as an aspiring self-actualization guru who is his own most ademant believer. The actress who plays the little girl Olive is adorable. Bit-role vetern Alan Arkin is great as the grandfather (it's not easy to give depth to characathuric roles like 'dirty old man that has no reserves about telling it like it is'). Everyoen is great, and the setup is great. The pacing seems awkward at time, like it feels like it's not supposed to be towards the end yet, but it is. In the end, I give it 4 smoothies out of 5, a great movie for people who like dark comedy that aren't necesarily sadistic.
MetalHeart Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 YESSSS! AAAAAH I want to see this so badly! a;skdjf;alksdjf
Iambaytor Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I want to see this myself, so if it's not sadistic may I ask why it's a "dark" comedy, I mean what exaclty is dark about it, just curious seeing as I tend to be wary of dark comedies since Employee of the Month and The Ice Harvest.
Reverend Jax Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 Employee of the Month is a dark comedy? I missed that memo. The commercial made it seem as dark as American Pie (which is not dark). I'm just saying, you see lots of dark comedies, like Very Bad Things and Election and forget they don't have to fuck over the characters in twisted ways to be dark. Anyway, it's great. It's twisted, but not sadistic, it's dry and witty, but not inhuman. It's just a good solid film.
La Lindsay Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 yes. i will see this. after i finish seeing snakes on a plane.

No no, not the new Employee of the Month with Dane Cook in it, there was one from last year that had Steve Zahn and Christina Applegate, it was a dark comedy.
Reverend Jax Posted August 26, 2006 Author Posted August 26, 2006 Oh, was it an indie sleeper or a straight to video deal, cause I didn't hear about it.
Iambaytor Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Straight to video it had, oh shit what was his name, the guy who was in Crash and There's Something About Mary in the lead. Decent movie, but the ending pissed me off.
Reverend Jax Posted August 26, 2006 Author Posted August 26, 2006 Matt Dillon? He's good. He's in a good indie one coming up. I'd watch it... ...for Johnny!
Silent Bob Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I've always thought of dark comedies as movies that are funny about things that really shouldn't be funny. The Ice Harvest was more dark than comedy (I always thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang succeeded with what The Ice Harvest was attempting to do).

The Ice Harvest was more dark than comedy (I always thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang succeeded with what The Ice Harvest was attempting to do). I agree entirely with that comment, when I explain Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to people I refer to it as the movie that The Ice Harvest wanted to be.
Reverend Jax Posted August 28, 2006 Author Posted August 28, 2006 Saw the trailer for Employee of the Month. Looks pretty good (not Election good, but at least Very Bad Things good). My favorite part from the trailer was » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « David Walsh: Whisper, do you have a boyfriend?Whisper: Yeah. David Walsh: What would you do if he was having sex with another girl? Whisper: Play with her tits? In it's 5th week of release, Little Miss Sunshine more than doubled the number of screens it was on and jumped up from 7th place to 3rd place at the Box Office. Of course there was only a $1.6M difference between 3rd place and 9th place this week, but it's still good news for this indie darling.
La Lindsay Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 this movie was fucking awesome. everyone in it was great. seriously. this was the funniest movie i've seen all year and the characters were all very believable and sincere. i will be buying this movie when it comes out on dvd.
Reverend Jax Posted September 11, 2006 Author Posted September 11, 2006 Yeah, it's hard to pick a favorite character. I like them usign the atress that played the mother in Donnie Carko that was in charge of the Sparkle Motion dance team to be the coordinator of the Little Miss Sunshine Pagent. I basically went fo Steve Carrell, but ended up liking Greg Kinnear's character better, not to knock to knock Carrell as the nation's foremost Proust-scholar. Everyone gave a great preformance. If the academy didn't like taking a dumb on comedy's, I'd say it was oscar worthy.
La Lindsay Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 i really loved the grandfather and olive. she's a great actress and not at all annoying like some other child actresses *coughdakotafanningcough*. and the oscars can shove it.

Senshik Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 My favorite scenes were when they would push the bus, run, and try to jump inside. Also that kid Dwayne reminds me of my younger bro. Damn you 15 yr olds. damn you and yer dramatic ways.
Ganny McVagflaps Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Everything Arkin was gold. The whole cast was great. Greg Kinnear and Toni Colette at the top of their game?
Reverend Jax Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 i will be buying this movie when it comes out on dvd. Haha, beat cha to it.
LightningOBO Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I can't believe i didnt see this thread before! I really liked the movie a lot and that little girl....she was something! I really liked how everyone is trying to suppress all their vices through out the day but when night falls, each has to face them. The scene that touched me the most was when Dwayne runs out of the van and the only way he gets back in is with Olive's hug....ok ok...enough. I gotta watch it again...
Ganny McVagflaps Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I hated that teenage fuck. He was the weakest link. Next time they should cast Ashton Kutcher.
Reverend Jax Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 so if it's not sadistic may I ask why it's a "dark" comedy, I mean what exaclty is dark about it, just curious Baytor: did you ever see this? Do you agree with my assessment that it was dark but not sadistic? Did everyone else who say this movie agree with that?
Ganny McVagflaps Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 It was indeed a black comedy. I say black instead of dark so the man gets stuck it some.
Iambaytor Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Baytor: did you ever see this? Do you agree with my assessment that it was dark but not sadistic? Did everyone else who say this movie agree with that? No I still haven't gotten around to it but I've got a lot of mvoies I've put on my hit list recently but after the recent lot of DVDs I've purchased in the last 3 weeks (Superman Returns, Fight Club, Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest, Clerks 2, My Name is Earl, The Descent, Pulse, and The Devil's Rejects) I'm getting low on funds and I still plan on buying The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 special edition and Snakes on a Plane (As well as possibly Maniac Cop and Black Christmas) my money has other plans and I don't believe in renting. So I'll get around to it sooner or later and give you my verdict then.
