bishopcruz Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 From Joystiq Firefly returns as MMORPGPosted Dec 8th 2006 8:59AM by Ludwig Kietzmann Filed under: Culture, PC, Online, RPGs, MMO Half of coding an MMORPG is hiding the statistics. Wired News reports that the criminally unappreciated Firefly is set to return as a massive, online role-playing game, thanks to an agreement between Multiverse and Fox Licensing. A charming collision between Western settings and futuristic technology (think live-action Cowboy Bebop), Firefly was a show marked with witty writing and memorable characters, but marred with abysmal ratings and a quick cancellation. Fox Licensing's Adam Kline believes that "Multiverse can deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans." Though hardcore Whedon fans are sure to be overcome with seizures of delight upon hearing this news, two crucial points need to be taken into consideration. The first -- Multiverse only develops the technology and tools necessary to create an MMORPG. For Firefly, they'll be hiring a team of seperate developers to realize their vision and not just do, as they say, "a reskin of World of Warcraft or Star Wars Galaxies." The second -- the massively multiplayer aspect of the genre implies that each player will have a unique character, with the show's core cast making celebrity-like appearances at best. Is Firefly's universe alone compelling enough for its own game? Looks like we'll have to wait until gorram 2008 before we can answer that one. Hopefully this will be damn cool, the universe is definitely big enough to to an MMO, I loved the hell out of the 'verse.
Reverend Jax Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Eh, I love Firefly, but I don't know about this. First consider this: Whedon was very explicit about the fact that the Firsfly universe (The 'Verse) had NO ALIENS. It obviously didn't have any mythical creatures either. So it'll be all humans with non-supernatural abilities. That is something I loved about the show and movies, but MMORPGs' (and I've never played one for more than five minutes, so this is an outsider's perceptive here) fun comes from diversity. Firefly could make a great game, but MMORPG? Maybe. As far as MMOPRGs go, I think Spore sounds the most interesting on the horizon.
Drifter Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 probably there's going to be a plethora of different character classes, and factions, Reavers, Alliance, Independents, Tongs...
Silent Bob Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Ho-lee shit. If there's anything in the world that could make me spend less of my gaming time in World of Warcraft, it'd be this. But as thrilling as the idea is of more Firefly, I'm more worried than anything else. The majority of MMORPGs are a pain in the ass (I hate Star Wars Galaxies and I'm a Star Wars fan). The only thing worse than this game not coming out is if it comes out and it sucks.
The NZA Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 im not big on the genre, but barring Marvel's entry into it, this could get me on board, with a good console port. we'll see, id love to be Mal8675309. But playable Reavers could be cool too!
bishopcruz Posted December 9, 2006 Author Posted December 9, 2006 Well, it's far too early to judge as it is in pre-production right now. Best we can do is hope right now. I think a lot of the individuality will come in the ships. As for the Marvel MMO, one is coming to PC and 360 next year IIRC.
Drifter Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I go with Reavers being playable because of the Alliance vs. Hord of WoW but also because I don't really feel that there's much else to do. If they keep the feel of the 'vers then the ships won't be weapon platforms but large mobile cargo haulers and houses instead; there just isn't any real Ship-on-Ship combat in Firefly that isn't over in one second flat where everybody sneaks around and the guy who shoots first wins, period; but there might be Ship-to-Ship combat with boarding parties trying to take over the other guy's vessel. That said, everything else is probably going to take place planetside, kinda like KotOR and KotOR II where outside of a mini-shoot'emup-game your ship would only transport you from one "playable environment" to another with the ship it'self also being an interactive "playable environment" / home-base.
Lycaon Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Imteresting, Drifter. Maybe so. There were ships with weapons, though. Just not the Serenity.
Iambaytor Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Ah, Firefly gets further spread out into another medium. I don't know about this, popular culture as it has shown doesn't translate well into MMORPGs *cough*TheMatrixOnline*cough* I just wish the SciFi channel or SOMEONE would pick up the damn rights to the show or finish the proposed movie trilogy or something. I'm all for keeping this series alive, but don't bastardize it with games that commonly involve the line, "HeY gUrL WaNnA CyBeR?1"

Iambaytor Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Well honestly, don't we care more about the characters than the multiverse in which they live in? I don't want to play as an origional character, if there's a game I want to be Mal goddamn it!
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Which is why you and i will prolly play the single player offline, id imaigne. but dont hate on the cybering, its how some of us get our mack on.

I'm all for keeping this series alive, but don't bastardize it with games that commonly involve the line, "HeY gUrL WaNnA CyBeR?1" Generally I'd agree, but now I'm thinking different. No one has picked up the rights to the series and no one is working on any movies. Right now, this game is the only Firefly-related project in existence (officially, anyway). At least it's something. At least the story isn't completely dead and buried yet. And we're talking about a tv show which got itself a movie based on dvd sales alone. Did you know the Firefly series is number 29 currently on amazons highest selling list? That puts it even above newly released movies like Miami Vice, XMen 3 and (yes) Clerks II. The show has an audience and that audience is barely able to keep it on life support right now. If this game comes out and gets even more fans on board then that will only make the possibility of that future series or those future sequels more likely.
Drifter Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Talking last night with Bishop I got to thinking that the Serenity MMORPG might try to recreate the war of independence that the browncoats lost... Now, THAT would be interesting...
