The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 So...i started around the time of Arli$$, Spawn, and Oz, and really got into the network's shows when Sopranos started, it was huge. Since then, HBO has been pound-for-pound the best TV netowrk out there for its shows (moreso than movies, id argue), while FX and others are stepping it up as well. Still, ive seeen much of Sopranos, Ali G, Oz, and a few others (LL, we still have Six Feet Under season 1?), and recently downloaded The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, and wokring on Band of Brothers soon (thinking about Carnivale after all the hondonian hype), im not familar with the others. Right now, i lean towards Sorpnaos, but then ive put the most time into that one so far. What's your favorite of this great list?
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 For nostalgia' s sake: didn't Fraggle Rock start off on HBO? Carnivale all the way.
Silent Bob Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I haven't seen all of them on list but I'm inclined to vote Sopranos, as well. Every single one of those shows are great (I'm a big fan of Deadwood and Rome, and though I haven't gotten to see much of it, everything I've seen of The Wire is fantastic) but The Sopranos has pretty much been the best show on television every single year its been around. By the way, Band of Brothers was just a miniseries so I'm not sure it really counts. An amazing miniseries, though, you need to watch it Nick.
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 Ive heard - is it true that and Rome are getitng more in the future? Carnivalle is next to download on my list, as well. Fuck, i cant wait to add Preacher to this list in like...'08.
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I've heard the same about Rome, that there'll be more soon. As for Carnivale, that shit's wonderful (I'm surprised you haven't seen it yet, not to mention that it never made it past two seasons. That was as fucked up as the early cancellation of Dead Like Me, or even dare I say it, almost as fucked up as the early cancellation of Firefly).
Silent Bob Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Rome started as a miniseries but became an actual series. It's getting a second season soon. Band of Brothers ended when the mini ended. And I miss Dead Like Me
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 always wondered about Dead Like Me, too. and id heard mixed things about Carnivalle till recently.
the division of joy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 carnivale comes close, but i gotta go with da ali g show.. before it went to the "usaii" the film is brilliant too, but the series where he is in the uk is top notch in my opinion... is the soprano's worth watching?
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Dead Like Me was awesome (any moment MH'll probably pipe in here), and I'll not hear an ill word spoken of Carnivale. It may not be a saint, but that shit was great. GREAT.
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 DoJ - yes, if you like gangster flicks. its not as hollywood, but its a really great show. Ly - howbout a Dead Like Me thread for us that dont know...?
the division of joy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 i'm not majorly pushed on gangster flicks... jane austins mafia is about as far as i'll go really... i don't see the hype about the godfather's or scarface... ive tried... then again, lock stock and snatch could also be considered somewhat gangster... i'll torrent the first series and go from there
Silent Bob Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 If you can watch The Sopranos and not think it's one of the best shows ever made, you lack a pulse. But then, I'd say similar things about The Godfather so...
the division of joy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 to be honest, the only real reason i don't like the godfathers is because i had a friend ruin the films on me by telling me everything that happened in them, and hence, i wasn't that taken away by them... scarface just out n out bored me...
Silent Bob Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Well that would do it, then. Scarface I agree with. It has its moments, but overall...meh.
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Ly - howbout a Dead Like Me thread for us that dont know...? Wha-?! There isn't one?!
the division of joy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 same thing happened with the usual suspects... i was majorly pissed about that, because i had only heard brilliant things.... but yeah... da ali g show isn't a hbo original... channel 4 got there first... viva la britland
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 HBO trounces your britlands. Scarface is overrated, but if you dont dig Godfather, Casino, Heat, Once upon a time in America (never finished it tho), A bronx tale, carlito's way...fuck, its a helluva genre to miss out on, and Sopranos was orignally sold (as i recall) as teh more realistic side of it...either way, its a great show, good enough to renew my faith in TV writing during the dark days of reality TV explosion. Carnival's the one 2T and/or Jont hyped too, yes? cause if not, ill go in on just ly's say-so
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 What, you're saying that you won't watch it if they liked it? Harsh.
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 hah no i was saying their backing it only pushes it higher up my list of what gets watched next 's all.
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Oh. Right then. In that case, I do believe they were some of the ones talking about it in the favorite tv show thread. Been thinking about starting a Carnivale thread (as well as the Dead Like Me thread), and quoting them in there.
The NZA Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 well...get on it! i cant make all the new therads...
Silent Bob Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 "I've got illegals in my bottom!" God, I miss Mason. But Dead Like Me was a Showtime show, and this is an HBO thread so how 'bout them Romans?
Lycaon Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 well...get on it! i cant make all the new therads... Well, let me get off your mother first... "I've got illegals in my bottom!" God, I miss Mason. But Dead Like Me was a Showtime show, and this is an HBO thread so how 'bout them Romans? Hey, that's right!
Reverend Jax Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 If Da Ali G Show is on here, this isn't just scripted shows, in which case Real Time with Bill Maher oughta be on the poll.
La Lindsay Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 man, this is a really difficult poll. i think i'm gonna go with six feet under though. i loved the way they ended the show. i thought it was one of the best series finales i've seen. very appropriate for the show. i think i deleted the first season though, nick, so you'll have to redownload it.
