soldier of fortune Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 So Tenacious D's second album, the Pick of Destiny, same name as their recent film (which i've yet to see) Tracklisting: 1. Kickapoo 2. Classico 3. Baby 4. Destiny 5. History 6. Government Totally Sucks 7. Master Exploder 8. Divide 9. Papagenu (He's My Sassafras) 10. Dude (I Totally Miss You) 11. Break In City (Storm The Gate) 12. Car Chase City 13. Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown) 14. POD 15. Metal Here's what amazon.co.uk say Here's the problem that faced Jack Black and Kyle Gass when it came to making The Pick Of Destiny: how do you top your last effort, 2001's self-titled debut, when it contained the tale of how you wrote (and then forgot) "the best song in the world" ("Tribute")? A toughie, but if you're megalomaniacal comedy-rock duo Tenacious D, anything is possible - even if it contravenes plain logic and several laws of physics. A pumped-up hard rock opera that sees Black and Gass hunting for the eponymous guitar-plucker, the possession of which confers superhuman rocking abilities on its owner, The Pick Of Destiny both rocks hard – how could it not, with Dave Grohl behind the drumkit? – and rocks funny. The opening "Kickapoo" is an operatic scene-setter that features guest spots from both Meat Loaf (whose vocals, curiously, sound restrained next to Black's goofy rock howl) and ex-Sabbath man Ronnie James Dio, who imparts some secret wisdom in the arts of rocking. Other highlights come with "Classico", which recreates Mozart and Bach with added swear words, and "The Government Totally Sucks", which (as you might expect) makes up in passion what it lacks in insight. A comedy record, in other words, you'll actually want to listen to.--Louis Pattison Description Comedy duo Kyle Gass and Jack Black reunite for the first time since their eponymous 2001 debut album with this soundtrack of sorts to their movie 'The Pick Of Destiny'. A ludicrous rock 'n' roll romp full of self-referencing in-jokes, heavily inspired by 'The Blues Brothers' and involving a guitarplectrum forged from the tooth of Satan, the film is a great vehicle for more of The D's zany slapstick and scatological humour. This accompanying album features all of the songs from the film, including the single 'POD'. Ok, when i first got this and listened to it, i didn't really like it. Thought it was poor, but i guess i didn't give it a chance, it had to follow the debut! But this album is definitely a grower. Guess it would make more sense had i seen the film. But all in all its a very good album after a few listens, and considering some of the artists they've roped into it, its a rocking album. Went to see them in the RDS in Dublin on Sunday night, and they opened up in their usual way, with just JB and KG on acoustic, they played a couple of tunes, Dio, Explosivo, Wonderboy, then the stage show took over, the lights went out and a massive video of the D in hell played, it was pretty cool, while there, they form a band with Colonel Sanders, The AntiChrist, and Charlie Chaplin, lights go back up, and they've gone from 2 piece to 5 piece band, and they rocked! Definitely recommend seeing them if they're anywhere near by. Stand out tracks for me off that album though would be POD, Beelzeboss, Break in City Kickapoo Papagenu Overall its a fun record, not to be taken seriously, but you will find yourself tapping your feet and humming along the catchy tunes. :music: / 5
Jables Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I fucking loved that Youtube Trailer!! And The movie breaks here after Xmas as too I assume the soundtrack does. I dl'ed a video of theirs last night on XBL(yep- you can do that too) which I'm guessing is the theme song since the chorus had 'the Pick of Destiny' in it. It was like most TD stuff where like you said- definitely a grower. What I wanna know is how this compares to their first album?
soldier of fortune Posted December 14, 2006 Author Posted December 14, 2006 Compared to the first one, there are some better produced songs on this one, than the first. I think its as good, it definitely grows on you, i suggest you get it and listen to it a few times. The penultimate track, Beelzeboss, is awesome, with Dave Grohl providing both the drums and the vocal for the Devil... i find myself laughing to it in the car! "He's gonna make you gargle mayonaise!"
