Jumbie Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 OK, this is just some guy's opinion, but it should give us a starting point. He has two conditions for picking the weapons that I like 1 - No cosmic weapons like the Ultimate Nullifier, Philosopher's stone etc 2 - It's not about most powerful, but rather what makes you say, wow, that's cool. Here's his list: http://cardboardmonocle.com/blog/?page_id=462 My own two cents: I think some of Morpheus's stuff should be in here. I mean, he hardly used his sand or helmet as WEAPONS, but he could have and they were damned creepy-cool.
Reverend Jax Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 1 - No cosmic weapons like the Ultimate Nullifier, Philosopher's stone etc2 - It's not about most powerful, but rather what makes you say, wow, that's cool. Does that doublely eliminate the migthy Retcon? I don't what is meant my cosmic weapons if Mjolnir is not disqualified by such a condition. And I vote for Dangeresque's Nunchuck Gun.
Silent Bob Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Yeeeeeah. Good to see the Right Hand of Doom there too. That's pure Hellboy. Sure he's got the Samaritan, but beating someone with a huge rock fist is more him. I'm surprised Spidey's web-shooters aren't on there, because who wouldn't want web-shooters? I'm also fond of DD's billy club/nunchucks/bo staff/grappling hook/cane combo. They're usually just clubs now but in the old days it was amazing what they got those things to turn into.
Reverend Jax Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Yeah, the omition of web shooters is sad. They are versatille (transportation, projectile, traps, backpack made of webbing, etc) and, when Spidey was first introduced, pretty original in the comic book world. Pumpkin bombs and ebony swords are fine and all, but are not as cool, unique, or versatille.
Reverend Jax Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Also, I found it odd that Captian Cold's gun was included instead of Mr Freeze's. I thougth surely Mr Freeze was an older villian the Captain Cold. But according to Wikipedia, both made their debuts in February 1959. This is Silver Age, when DC owned Flash, not Golden Age, when All-American owned Flash. So DC created Captain Cold adn Mr Freeze at the exact same time. Which leads me to the question, what the heck make's Captain Cold's gun cooler (get it? cooler) than Mr Freeze's?
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Cold's a better/more popular villian, as i understand it. i could be wrong. Any of those top 5 (great list) are solid, but Saint's guns and GL's ring top my list, tho they all have their weaknesses. Wolvy's claws rip your hands open, Saints guns show you the dead (that might fuck with you), GL's ring can be fucked up if youre distracted, Mjolnir only wokrs for Thor, and Spidey's gun just makes you shit. Anyway, there's more left off this list, i just gotta think about it.
Jables Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I'da ditched The wrecking Crew's crowbar for Absorbing man's wrecking ball. I know the power came from Loki, but is it in the ball or in Creel himself? And the only reason Cold's more popular is 'cause he's never been seen near a Joel Schumacher movie. Even Bane(one've my favourites) dropped off the radar after that one.
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 its true. saying "bomb" over and over shortened his 15 minutes quite a bit. I still think Thor's hammer falls under "cosmic", just as much as the surfer's board.
Jumbie Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Cosmic here refers to anything that gives you some kinda ultimate power. Mjolnir doesn't do that, though it does a lot of cool stuff. Yes, SPiderman's shooters are a strange omission. SOme people were bitching in the original page's comments about there not being a utility belt on the list, but I find it hard to think of the utility belt as a weapon. I wonder if Bullseye's ability should get on the list, since it's hard to pick a specific weapon with him, but he does some pretty cool weapon stuff. I'm glad that no Katanas or sais made the list. TOo played out. Spawn's suit is technically a weapon but having it on the same list as the witchblade would be kinda redundant.
Silent Bob Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I wonder if Bullseye's ability should get on the list, since it's hard to pick a specific weapon with him, but he does some pretty cool weapon stuff. Yeah, Bullseye with anything is cooler than 3/4s of that list.
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 katanas and sais are played out? this is a page of cliches. and no way does bullseye's ability get up there, thats like tossing in superman's invulnerability. What about uh, Mandarin's rings? They gotta be better than the Joker's flowers at least.
Jumbie Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 katanas and sais are UBER-played out. For every clone of the freeze gun that you give me, I'll give you 2 characters trying to cloak themselves in mystique with japanese blades.
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 freeze gun's too boring to be used outside of DC, but even then, youve got 2 there, so name me 4 characters using katanas and sais, and names arent taken from freudian theory/mythology.
Jables Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Yeah, Bullseye with anything is cooler than 3/4s of that list. There's a thread in that...
Jumbie Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 shi, Electra, Deadpool and um, Oedipus. Nah, just jokin, I meant to say Rafael.
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 you got Shi (i dont even think that character's around anymore), Elektra, Deadpool, and a ninja turtle? i call bullshit. if anyting's overused, its capes. i dont see why Green Arrow's boxing-glove arrows arent here.
Drifter Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 and not a Bat-arang in sight... use to have a similar game back in the day when I was with the FIU anime club with what's the most powerful anime weapon, Tenchi's Lighthawk Wings (sci-fi mystical energy bullshit), Gal Force's System Destroyer Cannon (for when that planet buster just won't do), or Gunbuster's Black Hole Bomb (it may look like a giant metal space egg but inside is the planet Jupiter, compressed and ready to implode)
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 ...all of which fall to Gatsu's phallic obscenity that is the Dragonslayer.
Drifter Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 And the Lighthawk wings are the manifestation of the energy of creation used by the three Goddesses to make our dimension in this universe... again sci-fi mystical energy bullshit... The ability of one man with a large sword to kill the occasional demon is insignificant next to the power of swallowing a Galaxy ala Black Hole Bomb... which is insignificant next to the power of the Force...
Reverend Jax Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Cosmic here refers to anything that gives you some kinda ultimate power. Mjolnir doetsn't do that, though it does a lot of cool stuff. 1 - No cosmic weapons like the Ultimate Nullifier, Philosopher's stone etc The gave the Philosopher's Stone on the cosmic list. From history and literature, Philosopher's stone only urns lead to gold and exceeds live. What comic are they referring to where's philosopher's stone is a cosmic weapon.
Jont Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Ok, lets start off by addressing the obvious absence of any 2000AD weapons. Yes, the British comic that the vast majority of creators who fix your broken old American comics were raised and trained on. Judge Dredd's Lawgiver; Nikolai Dante's Weapons Crest and Bio Blades; Carver Hale's possessed shotgun; Slaine's Axe, Brain-Biter; any number of Johnny Alpha's weapons, my favourite's the Time Bomb, (it sends whoever's in its range forward in time by three seconds, at which point the planet is further along its orbit, leaving its victims to die from decompression, pointless but brilliant.)
Jables Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I've never read 2000AD but I'm with Jont. They sounds like the goods. Trick arrows could maybe qualify, but batarangs? They're just boomerangs made of metal. Credit the Aborigines where they're due. PS- I'd personally put Iron Spidey's costume over IM's in there.
Jumbie Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 Nick, I said I'd give you 2 for every one you named. That meant I only had to come up with 4. I could throw in Wolverine (in his Japan flashbacks) or Psylocke or Ninjak or anybody from the Hand or Savitar(sp?) from Flash. An that's just off the top o my head. Does Blade carry a sword in the comics? And I realize it's not comics, but the Katana in Highlander and Kill Bill does oveexpose it as well. Jax: The Philosopher's Stone in DC has the power to remake reality. JLA #10 circa 1999 was part of a storyline involving that. Batarangs are just boomerangs with funny edges. cool, but not that cool. You know what I just thought of? Rom, the spaceknight had a weapon that would banish the target to Limbo. That was pretty cool to me. Better than a freeze gun, that's for sure.
Jables Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Fuck JLA #10. It was written by that hack Morrison & everyone knows his work should be scoured from continuity.
