Reverend Jax Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 The stakes are high for Sony, Disney, and Dreamworks. They will be releasing Spider-Man 3, Shrek The 3rd and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, respectively, on May 4th, May 18th and May 25th. The stakes are particularly high for Disney and Dreamworks, as they are bitter rivals. In US grosses, Spider Man 1 and 2 are the 7th and 10th highest grossing films of all time, Shrek 1 and 2 are the 30th and 3th highest grossing films of all time, and Pirates 1 and 2 are 22nd and 6th highest grossing films of all time. In worldwide grosses, those same films are 15th, 18th, 59th, 9th, 26th and 3rd. While none of the trilogies is in a realistic position to overtake the LOTR trilogy, they are in a position to overtake the IV-VI Star Wars Trilogy and maybe the I-III trilogy too. Worldwide, Spidey has taken in $1,590,277,893, Shrek has taken in $1,335,971,036, and Pirates has taken in $1,713,532,628. Shrek made the biggest jumpr from Part 1 to 2, Spider-Man has been the most consistant, and Pirates has the most overall gross. Spider-Man has the advantage of having two whole weeks without major competition. Shrek will likely clobber Spider-Man in it's first week, as Spidey doesn't ahve the power to beat a premiering Shrek after two weeks. Pirates will likelybeat Shrek the next week, but perhaps not by alot. So vote and discuss.
The NZA Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Spidey, Shrek, then Pirates, i think. i never saw Pirates 2, come to think of it.
Reverend Jax Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 pirates 2 made more than spidey 1 or 2.
Senshik Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 woah. I wasn't aware of a shrek 3 or Priates 3... I have to see Pirates 2... Where the hell have i been!?!? -_- Spidey on the other hand, I CAN'T WAIT!!!
LightningOBO Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Spider-Man 3 for sure will be the top money making film...but Harry Potter is coming out with an even darker film... Pirates will definitely do well, but not as well as Spider-Man 3. Shrek I'm not so sure...I didnt really watch the first or second one fully! But although, the hype of spider-man 3 is venom....i heard that venom is just the hook for the NEXT spider-man, instead the focus on this chapter is Sandman * Toby-whatever will NOT be playing Spider-Man in Spider-man 4....kind of a stupid move, for someone who's career is made with this ONE character...aside from that, he's just a wallflower! *do not read the spoiler if you dont know news about spiderman 3--i dont want to ruin your expecations or ideas
La Lindsay Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 the ice storm, cider house rules, pleasantville, wonderboys...yeah, what a crappy career.
Jables Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 :Mraaaaooooow: Jax- Did you get the idea from the article Wizard did or do you actually form your own thoughts & opinions? I'm saying Pirates, then Spidey, then Harry Potter. Pirates 2 was a lot darker, and I highly endorse it to anyone hasn't seen it as 3 will basically pick right up where the cliffhanger of 2 left off(they were filmed together I believe- hence the year-apart releases), and simply due to the broader demographic it pulls most reckon it'll top 2007. Spidey in second because goddamnit, 3's gonna fucking rock the living shit out of anyone going to see it, and cinema owners will either cover their seats in gladwrap or go broke cleaning cookies & cream off the aisles, floors, seats & ceilings. Shrek the 3rd I look quite forward to, but don't expect it to pull anything like Order of the Phoenix will(though it's my least favourite book).
Reverend Jax Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 You do know Shrek 2 is the third highest grossing film after Titanic and Star Wars IV, right? Shrek's a contender here. And Tobey McGuire has had a great art house career, between his recognizability (both name and appearance) and his indie/art house cred, he'll have lots of options and a very fulfilling career if he makes good choices. But the official word is he thinks movie 3 has enough resolution to it that it's a logical place to break up the team and go out on a high note. He is not opposed to playing Spidey again, but only if he likes the script. Raimi is pretty much still enthusiastic and Dunst will only work with Raimi on board. I'm glad TM is holding out fo a great script. It'll keep Sony working hard to make the future scripts good. PS I don't read Wizard. I came up with this idea for this thread when reading the list of upcoming summer releases. I was curious at to which one "experts" thought would come out on top, so I googled the three movies together and saw that it was a matter of debate, so I made a thread.
Jables Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I do, but Shrek 3 isn't exactly standing on the shoulders of titans here. I didn't even realise there was a Shrek 3 coming until about a month ago, and I figure a lot more people are talking about Pirates, Spidey & Harry Potter(if nothing else these all have many more merch lines) than about Shrek. Shrek 2 did well, but you gotta bear in mind it came in a slump period if I recall, not to mention that's what a few folks attribute to it's success.
alive she cried Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Shrek 2 had Tom Waits. Any "kids" movie that has the balls to put tom waits in it, is top class in my book...oh and the eels, Tom Waits and The Eels, fuckin' hell. Anywho, the one i'm most lookin' forward to is spidey 3. I just can't fuckin' wait. I think this'll be the highest grossing also.
Jables Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 See now Spidey doesn't have the cultural thumbs-up the way Pirates do. Every wanker & his dog is all about talking like Pirates, or saying "ARG".
La Lindsay Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'm glad TB is holding out fo a great script. tuberculosis? anyway, shrek 2 is so awesome, i own 3 copies of it on DVD. thank you jaxasaurus.
Silent Bob Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Personally, I think it's gonna be Pirates. Of the three, Pirates is the only one that had the killer cliffhanger in part two. Just about everyone who bought tickets for Dead Man's Chest has been counting down the days for At World's End. Also, considering that Pirates 2 was just last year, whereas it's been three years since people have seen a Spidey or Shrek movie, it's the series that is more fresh in people's minds. Spidey 3 is gonna be huge but I think Pirates just might beat it. I think Shrek will be at the bottom of the three, and I'd be surprised if it surpasses the grosses for Shrek 2. Still, I could be wrong. By the way, while we're on three movies, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3, Ocean's Thirteen and Resident Evil: Extinction are also coming out this summer, but none of those has a chance of getting close to the top three...uh...threes.
Jables Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Nice, SB, what about Harry Potter? How do you like that Vs Shrek 3?
Aoi Inu Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I agree with the whole Pirates being fresh in our minds and everyone expecting this new one but I also agree that a whole lot of people are waiting for Spidey 3. I figure that these two will be pretty close. Even though I personally am looking forward to Pirates the most, I don't think it will overpower Spidey by much if it does. Shrek is a great fun movie series, but I think someone mentioned this on another thread. It's cool humor for the times and after a while it won't catch much attention. I think they might have over played this one. The second movie was a good follow up story of what happened after the first but this third is like crap. They are making a movie just to make it. There is no continuing storyline besides the fact that they are ogres. I'm not saying it won't make money, but I wasn't even considering it in the top 3. I would say, even though it wouldn't fit into this poll cause it's a number 5 movie for the series, Harry Potter will probably follow. Crazy Potter fans I tell you.
Reverend Jax Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 Shrek 3 doesn't look like it's burned all its gas yet. Check out the trailer. I especially like the scene with Prince Charming interrogates Pinocchio. Also, Justin Timberlake plays a young King Arthur. When it comes to spoofing fairy tales, Shrek has a deep well of material to draw from. And yes, Shrek's humor is more contemporary, but since this is a new Shrek, it'll appeal to that same contemporary vibe as the first two did. Both Shrek and Pirates are laying low on the marketing thing. Pirates hasn't even put a trailer out yet (in case yall didn't know, Chow Yun Fat is in Pirates 3). Spidey's been burning alot of cash on marketing part 3 compared to them.
La Lindsay Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I think pirates 3 is the only movie i'm not really looking forward to. This is more or less how i felt about the 2nd one:
LightningOBO Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 the ice storm, cider house rules, pleasantville, wonderboys...yeah, what a crappy career. Well, he's not Ben Affleck or some OVER THE TOP "hollywood" actor. I mean I THINK I'm right when I say that not one of those movies grossed anywhere close to what Spider-Man made. (I AM NOT SAYING THAT THEY WERE BAD) People didnt even think that he would be a good choice because he was not "THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE" according to GQ Like Jax stated, yeah he has optioni n the idie world...But Spider-Man will be the climax of his career. I highly doubt that we would see him starring in any sick ass role! just a thought!
the division of joy Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I think pirates 3 is the only movie i'm not really looking forward to. This is more or less how i felt about the 2nd one: hahahaahaha, just makes me all the more glad i havent seen it

I mean I THINK I'm right when I say that not one of those movies grossed anywhere close to what Spider-Man made. (I AM NOT SAYING THAT THEY WERE BAD) sometimes actors like to act which is why they do indie stuff occasionally or more than occasionally. it doesn't matter what a movie grosses. titanic made a shitload of money and it sucked major balls. but kate winslet and leonardo dicaprio are still picky about what movies they do. they're not jumping on every jerry bruckheimer natural disaster movie that comes along. i'm not equating spiderman to a jerry bruckheimer movie or saying that because it grossed a lot means that it's not good quality or that all indie films are artistic gems, but not alll actors are in the business for the money or recognition. some actors are attracted to the story which seems to reflect in maguires past choices. so it makes perfect sense that he would actually wait for a good script to come along before he decided whether or not he wanted to keep the franchise alive instead of seeing dollar signs and signing on for some crap sequel.

Actually, I was reading somewhere online, and had a discussion about it with a friend of mine and the media was stating that he had been complaining about a few things with the set and his costume- THAT is what I am basing my opinion on. IF HE decides not to do the next Spider-Man because he's bickering, then he'd be making a mistake!
La Lindsay Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 i never said that actors weren't whiney bitches though. but still, it's his life... also, you can never really trust a lot of what the media says.
Jables Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 So uhm... What're you two fighting about now? Didn't this just start out as Tobey Maguire doing nothing before Spiderman & being a moron for giving up his meal ticket? Anyone could be excused for not being previously aware of Tobe's work 'cause it IS indie stuff, and who watches that? I mean really?
La Lindsay Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 skeets, who let you out of your cage?!! someone's gonna get the belt.
Jables Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 You can put me back in but you'll lose a limb doing it. I've taken safeguards this time by covering myself in shit. Do your worst.
