Drive

So I've seen the commercials for this new show on fox and Nathan Fillion (yay!!!) is in it so I poked around on IMDb. this is a new series about an illegal cross-country road race, but what hooked me is that Tim Minear is the creator/executive producer/writer of this show. if you don't know (which you should if you're a dork like me), Minear has written a few of the better episodes of Firefly (out of gas, the message, bushwacked (introducing the reavers)) and angel and has exec produced both shows (and he's also worked on the x-files and wonderfalls). Anyway, that gives me a lot of hope for the show's writing. here's the plot from fox.com:

The next time you’re cut off by crazed drivers on your way to work, give them a little slack. They could be racing for their lives.

DRIVE is an action-fueled drama following a diverse group of Americans competing for their lives (or the lives of their loved ones) in an illegal, underground cross-country road race. Some of them have been coerced into joining “The Race”; others have sought out The Race themselves, hearing rumors of the $32-million prize. Each has a reason to compete. And each must win.

ALEX TULLY (Nathan Fillion, “Firefly,” “Slither”) is thrust into The Race in an effort to find his missing wife. New mother WENDY PATRAKAS (Melanie Lynskey) is on the run from her husband and competing for the safety of her newborn baby – or possibly something much more extraordinary. JOHN TRIMBLE (Dylan Baker) is a buttoned-down scientist who embraces The Race as the last chance to show his rebellious 15-year-old daughter VIOLET (Emma Stone) that he can be spontaneous. WINSTON SALAZAR (Kevin Alejandro) views The Race as an opportunity to leave his criminal past behind and bond with SEAN (J.D. Pardo), the half-brother he has only just met. Hurricane Katrina survivors IVY CHITTY (Taryn Manning, “Hustle & Flow”), LEIGH BARNTHOUSE (Rochelle Aytes) and SUSAN CHAMBLEE (Michael Hyatt) are determined to start their lives over and help rebuild their fallen city with The Race’s winnings. ELLIE HOWE (Mircea Monroe) sees The Race as an opportunity to keep her boyfriend, military specialist ROB LAIRD (Riley Smith), from being sent back to Iraq. And CORINNA WILES (Kristin Lehman), who becomes an uneasy partner with Alex, is a gorgeous and mysterious stowaway who may well hold the key to the secrets of “The Race” and its mysterious benefactors.

Although MR. BRIGHT (Charles Martin Smith), The Race liaison, has informed them that there are other competitors, the group does not know exactly whom they’re racing against, or even where the finish line is. With each mile clocked, the drivers get closer – not only to the end of the road and a critical, life-changing victory, but to understanding the mystery behind The Race itself.

Created, executive-produced and written by Tim Minear and Ben Queen, DRIVE is a 20th Century Fox Television Production. Greg Yaitanes serves as an executive producer and director.

The premier stars on Sunday April 15th @8PM on Fox and continues on Monday April 16th @8PM on Fox.

I also read that Amy Acker (Fred from angel) is supposed to play Nathan Fillion's wife. Yay!!

So it's on Fox, huh? I'll set up a google alert* with the keywords 'Fox', 'Drive' and 'Canceled' so I can let everyone on here know when it's official.

*You enter keywords and Google sends you emails with any news articles with those keywords as they becoem available.

I want to see if before I bet. If it suck it might last a while. The risk I run by waiting to see the premiere is that it might be canceled before the premiere. Looks liek it's already happened to Andy Ritcher's Andy Barker PI on NBC, though it hasn't been made official yet.

The premiere is this weekend, and I've my first Google hit hinting at cancellation.

The link

The analysis of cancellation likelihood:

Minear's a talented writer and producer, don't get me wrong, and he's been a key backstage figure for some good-to-great TV shows over the last few years: the better seasons of the "Buffy" spin-off "Angel"; the cult classic outer space western "Firefly"; the eccentric do-gooder dramedy "Wonderfalls," and the FBI criminal profiling drama "The Inside."

It's just that he kills shows dead -- or, rather, that Fox does.

For the last few years, Minear has been involved in a financially lucrative but sado-masochistic relationship with Fox, producing these shows, then handing them off to the network, where they'll suffer a quick, ignoble death in an out-of-the-way timeslot.

Pretty good start, I mean it wasn't "Serenity", but it was good for a season premiere. Nathan Fillion is the strongest member of the cast by far, though I was happy to see Amy Acker. Anyone else catch it?

Also, being the lead in to 24 will hopefully be good for it. How did Jailbreak do ratings wise?

Well, it's been cancelled.

TVGuide.com exclusive

House reruns will take over it's time slot effective immediately. 2 more episodes will air in May on Fridays.

Well, I called it. The show is obviously not cheap to produce and the ratings were not impressive for being along side 24 and having gotten the promotion it got. This is the unfortunate reality of being on a network that's doing very well. Fox has 4 our of the top 5 rated shows on prime time right now (American Idol, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, 24, and House). They are not in any position where they need to invest in a show and let it grow. They feel they have viewers watching their shows, watching their commercials, and if an expensive show can't kick ass coming out of the gate, it's not worth it. Oh well.

Oh for fuck's sake, Firefly, the Tick, Kitchen Confidential, and now this. Fuck. You. Fox. (Yes I left Arrested Development off the list becuase it flourished for 2 seasons, Futurama and Family Guy as well. I am however pissed about the cartoon Tick also.)

Fucksake, that was fast! i didnt even really catch it yet! Bish was just telling me yesterday how he thought it had the potential to be something like Firefly down the road...jesus, this is unkind. Nathan's not loving life right now.

Or maybe they think Nathan Fillon has more star power than Harrison Ford, and if a show he's in doesn't get 20 million viewers a week, the show itself must suck.

Looking at Harrison Ford's filmography from the past few years, that's not so far-fetched.

I remember a few weeks ago finding a news website that had a list of "15 TV Shows that Should Not Have Been Cancelled". Fox had about 8 of 'em.
