Iambaytor
70s SNL, no other shows compare.
Jont
Notable by their absence: The Fast Show Little Britain The League of Gentlemen (arguably not a sketch show due to its fixed location, but I'd say its admissible) Notable by its presence: The Benny Hill Show
Iambaytor
Aw shit, I somehow missed Monty Python on that list. Ah, well, I'll stick to my guns. Monty Python was tha panultimate anyhow, no use competing against that one. But seriously the only real contenders on there are Monty Python, SNL 70s-90s, and Kids in the Hall
The NZA
coulda sworn we'd done this poll? but not covering as much ground. 70's SNL was good, i watched more 80's myself when it was Milller, Rock, Sandler, Farley, Spade etc but to be honest, i grew up more with In Living Color, that might be the one to beat for me. You look back at it, having Jim Carrey, the Wayans, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier and others on the same set so long made for a lotta golden moments. Jont
Python, without a doubt. Little Britain is a pile of shit, sorry, but it is. It's nothing on the League of Gentlemen, but I'll happily defend the first series, not the greatest comedy ever made, but before they got too hung up on their own catch phrases and scatological humour, they could produce something as brilliant as this: Now to really make you hate me, do you really think Monty Python's Flying Circus, the sketch show is really worthy? It had its , lots of them, but in my mind, geniuses that they were, it was experimental comedy, and was as much hit as miss. And Now for Something Completely Different, The Life of Brian and The Holy Grail are their legacy, but with Flying Circus, they were still finding their feet. crimsonfire
I voted none of those. Its either The Fast Show or Whose Line Is It Anyway? for me.

Jont
but jam is good right? Quoting you from a completely different thread, but thanks for reminding me all the same. In my book the greatest sketch show ever: Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmm
alive she cried
This is my experience with Little britain First episode: Ha ha some good sketch's there Second episode: Are they repeating last weeks episod...oh no they're in a different location, it must be different. Ha Third episode: Ok same jokes again, this is getting kinda annoying Fourth episode: "I want that one" *click* i agree that there are moments in python that are'nt the best, but i think that the majority were fantastic and the majority of those are unrivaled. there are so many great unknown sketches, such as this and the one you posted. and now for something completely different (not python) *edit*layout of post went wrong and wont change back *edit the second* thanks jont Edited June 20, 2007 by alive she cried

Replace 'And Now for Something Completely Different' with 'The Meanign of Life' and you have a potential case. I've not seen much Flying Circus, but the popular sketches I've seen (Dead Parrot, etc) are funny, but I have to agree. Alot of times Flying Circus goes far out and I'm not out there with them. Crimson: Whose Line isn't sketch comedy, it's improv comedy.

I've never managed to watch the whole of the Meaning of Life, maybe one day, what I saw I wasn't too keen on, on from what I hear, not many people were. For those that may not know, And Now For Something Completely Different aside from being a catchphrase was the name of the Python's first movie, a collection of sketches re-filmed for distribution in America, and I prefer its versions to their BBC counterparts in most every case, Python's on film had a chance to act with confidence, and what makes the difference between good comedy and great comedy is acting. With the TV show, shot in studio, for the most part all they could do was push relentlessly through the script before they ran out of breath or the audience lost interest. Jont
Still trying to further my cause that Chris Morris is greater than everything, I wonder out loud if the Day Today would count as sketch comedy.
Reverend Jax
I've only seen bits and piece, but it seems to be like a satirical commentary show. Do they do interviews on The Day Today? Anyway, I reckon it's not sketch comedy.

Anyway, I reckon it's not sketch comedy. It's a parody of the UK news, each report is like a sketch of its own, there's interviews, but on the Day Today they're all fictitious. So I'll agree with you, it may as well be a sketch show, but its not. Jam however is, put it on the list, I refuse to vote other and I think Metal Heart deserves her little Britain.
