Reverend Jax
Curious, are you watching the remastered versions of TOS w/ the updated SFX? The ones on youtube are not the ones with the updated sfx, but like I said, youtube is missing about half a dozen episodes, so I downloaded the ones that weren't on youtube and the ones I downloaded do have the updated sfx. Reverend Jax
So I finished watching the Original Series and after reading a bit about the franchise, and became curious about the Animated Series when I read that Gene Roddenberry negotiated with Paramount to have it decanonized. I started watching it, and having all the original voice actors makes if feel like a real continuation of the series for me, so I don't really understand Roddenberry's dislike for it. It was clearly made by people with alot of respect for the Star Trek universe (including writers from the original series), and animation allowed for alot more non-humanoid aliens and larger landscapes. But the reason I posted was that I just saw the episode The Magicks of Megas Tu, and I have to say, it was pretty fuckin' subversive for Saturday morning. I'll spoiler tag this because it's really just the ending that was so shocking. The crew goes to the center of the galaxy to confirm a theory about the creation of matter. There they find that the laws of physics are drastically different than there are elsewhere in the galaxy. Essentially, 'magic' exists there. The bridge of the Enterprise is visited by a magical creature named Lucien, who is happy to see the crew from Earth. He invites them to his planet. When they arrive, they learned that this world's natives (called Megans) had visited the Earth millennia ago. They were able to draw on the magic of their home world and use it on Earth. They attempted to become advisers and helpers to humans, but found everywhere they went they were met by fear, or ambitious power-hungry greed. They eventually tried to come together to create a community apart from other humans, in Salem Massachusetts. After the witch trials, they decided to leave Earth and return home, though Lucien personally wanted to say, as he liked humans. When Lucien senses Megans approaching, he sends the crew back to the Enterprise. Once back on the Enterprise, they attempt to see if they too can practice magic in this world. They find that in this world, belief is as powerful as any energy, and they too can use magic. But their use of magic allows the other Megans to discover the crew. The Megans take crew back to the planet and put them on trial, as well as Lucien for bringing them to Megas Tu. As a non-human, Spock acts as the legal counsel to defend humanity. After testimony and giving the Megas access to the Enterprises tapes of Earth and federation history, the crew is deemed not guilty, as they determined that humanity has evolved since Salem. But Lucien is condemned to live alone in Limbo forever, for betraying his people. Kirk comes to Lucien's defense, then the prosecutor asks Kirk if he would still defend Lucien if he knew his name while on Earth had been Lucifer. Kirk says it does not matter, as Lucifer is a living being and intelligent life form. When the prosecutor is unswayed, Kirk uses the magic he learned and fights him to help Lucifer. Once Kirk is overpowered, he tells the prosecutor that he would not stop fighting, because the Megans had become as bad as the Earth men they despised, acting out of terror instead of thought and respect. The prosecutor relents, shocked that Kirk was willing to die for the non-human, Lucifer. The prosecutor then reveals that Lucien's sentence was an elaborate ruse to see if humanity had in fact changed, as they thought the Enterprise's history tapes might have been false and a trick. They all celebrate by drinking together (beer, or possibility mead). Spock has the last line saying that this was the second time Lucifer had been cast out, but thanks to Kirk, this time he was saved. One of the best Star Trek episodes I've seen, animated or not. Little Nemo McFly
http://trekcore.com/blog/2015/08/remastered-star-trek-tng-episodes-hit-netflix-usa/ The REMASTERED HD Star Trek: The Next Generation is on Netflix! I got Season 1 and 2 on Bluray - they're expensive as hell, but these remastered / restored episodes are fucking gorgeous! Great way to keep watching the remastered series without owning the sets. The special features on the Blurays are fantastic, especially the ones covering the restoration process and the reunions. Great time for the uninitiated to jump in, "and for everyone else, to experience it...again."
Little Nemo McFly
Just picked up Season 1 of TOS on bluray at Best Buy. $25!!! Those seasons usually go for like, 60 - 70 bucks! 7 disc set, includes a bunch of sick extras. Looking forward to the restoration featurette and the tour of the Enterprise. It lets you switch between the original version and the updated fx version on the fly! While watching, you can switch versions from the pop-up menu or just hit the angle button. Whaaaaat... I picked up the last Season 1 on the shelf. They only had a couple Season 2s and 3s left. That is not gonna last the weekend. I'd get the other seasons while they're dirt cheap, but I'm picking up the Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire playset for Infinity on Tuesday...and maaaybe some figures. Not enough dough to go around. Thought I'd give any Star Trek fans a heads up on the insane prices on these awesome sets at Best Buy - maybe the sale will still be going through the weekend and some will be there. I'm in Georgia...so, I don't know if it's a regional sale. (shrugs) Just FYI - might be worth checking out. "Engage!"

Jumbie
Anton Yelchin, The new Chekov, has died in an auto accident. The new Trek movie he's in will be released in one month.
Little Nemo McFly
Whoa. RIP - I thought his character portrayal was cool. Meh. Call me when they bring out Deep Space Nine. Yeah, after I'm done w/ TNG - I'm moving on to Deep Space 9. I've heard good n' bad - I'm actually looking forward to it. My only understanding / expectation is that it's a deep-space space station(?) Ah dunno - but it's definitely next. Those sets drastically cut the prices on their respective seasons. They used to be about $60...each! These sets bring 'em down to about $20 a season. Not freakin' bad considering how jam-packed they are and the level of TLC given to their restorations. Mr. Hakujin
Yeah, that's a very sad story about Yelchin. He was ran over by his own car. Dude was only 27, too. Those sets drastically cut the prices on their respective seasons. They used to be about $60...each! These sets bring 'em down to about $20 a season. Not freakin' bad considering how jam-packed they are and the level of TLC given to their restorations. I've already got the whole TNG series on DVD (which avg. about $25 a season when I bought them). You know of any site that compares the special features on the BR vs DVD sets? That's about the only thing that'd have me thinking about plunking down more money for this a second time. Little Nemo McFly
Go to 'bluray.com' Extremely awesome site for collectors n' videophiles - which does go into those details. (my go-to site) Type in the flick in the search bar at the top - click the flick - and when it's page comes up, scroll down just a bit - click 'bluray review' (mostly - just a brief review will initially pop up, you gotta click 'bluray review' to get the site's full analysis. At the bottom of their review, it'll get into what special features are new and what have been brought over from previous DVD editions - if any. Offhand, I do know that these blurays have all the stuff from their DVD counterparts - plus, a plethora of brand-new HD docs n' featurettes. "The ship - hits the fans." LOL!!! What the hell?! Little Nemo McFly
I just finished TNG. I still don't have the complete series on blu (yet) - but it did look really good on Netflix. That last episode was great - and it was an hour and a half. Really felt like a feature / event. Really nice send-off and it felt 'wrapped up'. Totally gonna try Deep Space 9. The space station(?) 'cameo'd a couple o' times during the run - I was like, 'ey!' Can't wait to get the TNG set and pour through all the featurettes. ^ LOL!!! I could've watched an hour of that. The show's fun to watch w/ somebody 'cuz it's engaging and stirs up conversation - but also definitely has legit laugh-out-loud moments where it just gets...ridiculous, but in a 'camp' way. LOL - everyone is just so committed to their characters n' scenarios. I'd love to see the outtakes. The show really was hella-ahead of it's time, in many regards. Loved it. TOS and TNG have their strengths n' differences - but, I think I'm in the 'Picard > Kirk' camp.
Drifter
For me, Picard of the TV series is > Kirk. However, Picard of the TNG movies is < Kirk. Kirk is always Kirk in both the series and films but they tried to shoe-horn Picard into a generic action hero for the films and that just totally breaks with the character.
