Yaaay, I have someone else so I can stand up without fear of crucifixion as well. It's a decent movie, nothing more, I know why it didn't win an Oscar because it was a 70s exploitation film deftly disguised as social commentary, on the Scorsese scale I put The Departed, Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, and Raging Bull above it. It's a good movie but not the kind I'm ever going to really feel like watching more than once, and it's not a "must see" movie so it really doesn't fit the point of this thread, then again neither does The Professional really, but I can think of several better known movies that I consider better.

Pfft. Fear of crucification.

Pansy.

Oh you gotta give me credit, I'll proudly admit that I thoroughly enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Quick and the Dead, Con Air, Shoot 'Em Up, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, The Faculty, Spy Kids, Primeval and I'll even admit that I found Audition a bit lacking. But when you think you'll be roasted on a spit for admitting you think a movie is nowhere near as good as everyone claims it to be and they seem rabidly defensive of it, you tend to be wary.

To sum it up, you may perturb the bear but you don't kick it in the face and call its mother a whore.

Yeah but this poll is really about films that are so ingrained into the public pop culture consciousness that it seems nearly impossible for anyone to have not seen it. City of God is definitely not a film most people have seen. Taxi Driver (obviously), The Professional and possibly even The Crow probably don't quite fit the list either.

Star Wars - Should be on here, it's an international phenomenon and one of the biggest films of all time.

The Matrix - Fair enough, it was real popular till the sequel came out and ruined it for everyone

Fight Club - A bit obscure but given the crowd that circulates here it's passable.

Firefly/Serenity - Very obscure, plus Firefly doesn't count as its a TV show but Serenity I guess is passable just barely

Indiana Jones - Nearly as popular as Star Wars and equally worthy.

Ghostbusters - Not as popular as it used to be but still worthy

Spider-Man - Good, but not enough to list twice

Taxi Driver - Pretty popular at the time it was released bout 30ish years later it's not wildly popular

Braveheart - Not terribly mainstream anymore but I guess it could make the list.

The Professional - Too obscure

Boondock Saints - Too obscure

American Beauty - Just barely passable

Pulp Fiction - List worthy

Forrest Gump - List worthy

The Crow - Not list worthy

Die Hard - List worthy

Jaws - List worthy

E.T. - List worthy

Clerks/Mallrates/Chasing Amy/any of Kevin Smithi's Jersey works Clerks sure, Mallrats maybe, others not so much

Evil Dead. any of em, including Army of Darkness Army of Darkness yes, not so much the Evil Deads

The Godfather Listworthy

Notably missing:

Alien

The Terminator

The Silence of the Lambs

Smokey and the Bandit

Rambo: First Blood

Rocky

Pirates of the Caribbean

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Lord of the Rings

Um,

Jabba the Hut doesn't appear until Jedi.

Didn't Jabba have a short scene with Han Solo in Star Wars IV: A New Hope? I remember a scene like that when I saw the Special Edition in the Theaters. It was originally made for the original movie, but it was cut cuz the scene looked bad, but when they redid it, they fixed it up with CG.

I'm surprised the Lethal Weapon series, or the Police Academy movies for that matter are not mentioned in the poll.

Also check the poll, you have Spider-Man listed twice.

I'd also like to throw man on fire out there as things that should be on the list

Man on Fire? Ok, man, I really think you're not quite getting this list. This isn't a list for good movies that people should see. This is for movies that air twice every weekend on TNT. This is for movies that have spawned pop culture phenomena. This is for movies that are so iconic they've been spoofed and ripped off by dozens of others. This is for movies that you, your friends, and your grandmother have probably seen - more than once. The Shawshank Redemption could be on there. The Princess Bride could be on there. The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Planet of the Apes, The Rock, Batman, Goodfellas, and Schindler's List could be on there. Man on Fire could not. Neither one of 'em

ok, changed spider-man (the double) to trainspotting. for purposes of added movies that youd like to vote for, but already voted, just make the last line of your post in bold, saying yes or no for whatever movie and ill edit the poll to reflect your vote.

SB largely gets the idea here: yeah, i picked some of the most mainstream, iconic flicks that came to mind (he named some other good ones) and the others are either cult classics or, again my opinion here, very common films to have been watched by college kids or people around our age. Yeah, Professional and a few others arent nearly mainstream; theyre quality cult and often discussed. Some, like Boondock Saints and Serenity, are certainly niche but we talk on this board sometimes like we assume everyone's seen em, i just thought this poll could have a few functions to show a census.

I think its incorrect to shovel Taxi Driver in with, say, Citizen Kane as only film school stuff. Again, iconic in the sense that there's many references in pop culture for some of these, be it dorm posters or hot topic shirts. I honestly thought of putting The Graduate there instead, and might still add that one, but im thinking a "classic" movie poll with that and other pre-1980 films would be a fun poll too.

aarty - yes, i think youd quite possibly really dig American Beauty and youre welcome to borrow it if youre so inclined.

DoJ - for the purposes of this one, Titanic'd work much better than Papillion, great film or not.

I'm thinking of adding Planet of the Apes for more cult, but then again, im debating doing a series of these now (with SB and baytor for suggestions) so for now, let's work with what's up there and discuss that. An official "cult" and "classics" polls can follow soon enough, once i come up with a better name for these threads.

Well of course Taxi Driver shouldn't be compared to Citizen Kane, that's like comparing Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to Reservoir Dogs both good films in their own right but by and large entirely different things. Still, you have to admit, Average Joe moviegoer isn't going to get OR enjoy Taxi Driver and you can debate its greatness all you like but this is not a poll about movie appreciation, it's a poll about movies that are so popular that nigh upon anyone will catch a reference to them.

Also if you're doing a classics one I reccomend:

Chinatown

Casablanca

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Bonnie and Clyde

On the Waterfront

Rear Window

Psycho (Honestly I'm tempted to just make a list of Hitchcock films)

Sabrina

The Great Escape

Actually you know, I'll just PM you lists of things or maybe I'll become prolific and just make a thread listing must see movies.

that's a fine list, that'll help. see? my mind's on bullit so idve forgotten about a number of those.

you gotta admit, though: i play this stinkin' city...like a harp from hell! if its iconic were going for, Taxi Driver still fits. How many times you hear "you talkin' to me?", honestly? even if people dont always know theyre referencing it (ive found a few figured it was godfather 2 or some other de niro flick), that element makes it interesting, too.

go on, tell me i shoulda included dirty harry, then.

Personal bias much.

Yeah, this is a list for movie that if, in conversation, someone told you they've never seen, you'd be kind of surprised. NOT necessarily because the movie was so great, but because it's kinda weird that anyone living in the free world hasn't seen it. If someone hasn't seen Serenity, I would say "you should get into it, watch Firefly first, you'd really enjoy it." But if someone says they've never seen Star Wars (Lindsay and Kurtains!), I tend to think "didn't you spend your childhood in North Korea?"

Titanic definitely qualifies, no matter what you think of the movie's quality, everyone has an opinion on the movie's quality mostly because EVERYONE'S SEEN IT.

If Fight Club and Serenity are applicable so is Army of Darkness, most people have seen at least part of it even if they don't know its name.

Well by those standards yes, iconic lines don't necesserily equal a movie everyone's seen. Sure it was popular enough to be quotable at the time but come on.

Go back and actually read this thread from the beginning. I realize that it's already 5 or so pages by now, but the Jabba issue was from the beginning of the thread, and the Spiderman being listed twice has been listed throughout this entire thread. :)

Dear god, I think I've only seen one of those movies all the way through, and it wasn't Casablanca (The Great Escape).

I've never seen Titanic either, and I stand by that decision.

TNT is a TV channel here in the U.S. It was the first place I saw Legend. :duh:

But if someone says they've never seen Star Wars (Lindsay and Kurtains!), I tend to think "didn't you spend your childhood in North Korea?"

ok, a few things about me and star wars...

1) i saw them when i was really really young and only remember parts but clearly it didn't make that much of an impression on me because i've never felt the need to see them again so i'm not really interested, especially a 9 hour marathon. i'd rather be raped by a wombat and speak australian than watch star wars all the live long day.

2) shit's a lot more exciting when you don't know the plot twists and the star wars trilogy are some of those movies where even people who've never seen them know what happens in them.

3) the last star wars movie that i saw (episode 2, i believe) was so bad we MST'd it and it kind of soured me on the whole star wars sextilogy. the whole movie should have been about yoda kicking ass. it would have been a million times more watchable.

4) aside from horror, i'm not a big fan of movies set in space...it took me a long time to get around to watching firefly even though i would watch a movie about paint drying if i knew joss whedon was involved in the process at all.

5) the more people want me to watch star wars, the more i really don't want to watch it.

as far as where i spent my childhood...i was usually outside or in a pool.
