DIRTY HARRY 6?!

Recommended Posts

Well seeing as John McClane, John Rambo, Rock Balboa, Indiana Jones, and soon Axel Foley are back, it appears that Clint Eastwood will be wielding his .44 Magnum revolver one last time. The story will revolve a now very old Harry Callahan coming out of retirement (from what I understand due to the death of his grandson) to deal with a mysterious killer who is only known for driving a Gran Torino (Which will be the name of the film). Eastwood will (of course) be directing as well as starring in the film.

There are those who say that Clint Eastwood, now in his mid-70s, is too old to play the role but Charles Bronson stepped back into the role of Paul Kearsey for Death Wish 5 at roughly the same age. Plus Eastwood directing may give a Dirty Harry sequel the kick it needs to not suck.

Reports are still neither confirmed or denied by the studios or Eastwood, but signs point to yes. I may not ever see a sequel to Any Which Way You Can but come on, at least give me this!!

Fuck yeah!

Sorry, man. Though there are rumors that a sixth Dirty Harry movie is in the works, studio info from all the way back in March say that Gran Torino isn't it. Here's a post from Moviehole.net about it:

Dirty Harry, contrary to rumours, won’t be back – at least not in ''Gran Torino".

There have been rumours that Clint Eastwood’s next film might actually be a new Harry Callahan adventure - sad to say action-fans, it’s not the case. I’ve had the pleasure of reading part of the script over the past couple of days – bawdy man, top to toe in black, standing behind me as I dashed through it – and there’s not a “Make My Day” to be found.

But there is… a 1972 Grand Torino.

The car is the prized possession of the film’s central character (he doesn’t budge when his granddaughter mentions that she’d like the car when pop finally keels over) a senior named Walt, grandfather and local sour-puss. When a local Asian boy named Tao attempts to steal the car, Walt, against the advice of others (largely the local priest), forms his own form of punishment.

Ultimately, Walt sets Tao on the right path – giving him a job (even if it’s just doing things around the house for the old man) and teaching him how to communicate with others (there’s some VERY funny stuff in it where Walt has Tao practice his newly honed-speaking skills on the local Barber).

Yes, despite its dramatic moments, this is a comedy – a witty, coming-of-age, buddy comedy (yes, you can have all three) with heart. You've probably seen similar films, but I'm sure this'll have the Eastwood touch. If it reminds me of anything Eastwood's done in the past it's "A Perfect World", where kidnapper Kevin Costner befriends the young boy he has snatched.

This is a real change-of-pace for Eastwood, but a refreshing one – and though it’s not known whether he’ll play a part in it or not, he could probably hit the role of Walt out of the park (seems almost written for him). (Interestingly enough, a casting agent tells me that the role of Walt is not available. It has already been taken.)

Dirty Harry mightn’t be back, but Dirty Walt sounds like he’s going to be worth his weight in Gold.

...wait...of all the recent over-the-hill action franchise reanimations, Rambo was your beacon of hope? :FHD:

Oh now don't you start. Rambo was a great movie, it was a departure from the 80s campstravaganza that was First Blood Part 2 and Rambo 3. It was serious, it was well written (except the dialog), and it conveyed a message as well as raised awareness of the turmoil of a people that most people didn't even know it did, it did what the first one did only maybe better. And yes, it was bloody, and gory, and had lots of action but it's not something you sit down and "enjoy" it's a movie with just as much power as lots of others that have drawn awareness to suffering in foreign (and our own) soil the only difference was it had a character who was actually capable of doing something about it.

The big complaints I keep hearing are that it's a sequel that his nothing to do with the original film save for the title character, it's overly violent, the main character is portrayed as being nigh-unstoppable, the villain is evil to the point of being over the top, and the character has gone to a place that doesn't seem like they would be as said character. To that criticism I give you exhibit A:

Any criticism put toward Rambo can also be put toward Billy Jack.

Sorry, but Gran Torino is not gonna be another Dirty Harry sequel. Eastwood plays a character named Walt Kowalski, not Harry Callahan.

I loved all the Rambo movies, and I thought personally the last one was the best one yet. True it was pretty violent and gorey, but it was believable given the situation. And it was also a beacon of hope for me that maybe Sly might try for a fifth one yet.
