The NZA
Details coming through for this PS3/PC one, if slowly: Some new details have emerged of DC Universe Online, the new PC and PS3 MMO in development at Sony Online Entertainment. In this month's Edge magazine, executive creative director Jim Lee describes DC Universe as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game". You'll get to create your own superhero or villain, choosing their particular powers, according to the Edge article. So you'll decide whether to attack using fire or ice, for example, and move around using acrobatics or the power of flight. Other potential abilities mentioned in the article include speed-running and teleportation. As with a traditional MMO your character will level up as you progress, and you'll develop your powers. When the game starts you might be able to fly, but only later will you learn how to pull off specific moves and attacks in mid-air. Although you don't get to "be" any of the famous DC characters, you do get to interact with them. That might mean you end up saving Superman from being stabbed with a shard of kryptonite by Lex Luthor. Or, if you're a villain, you could cause carnage by chucking cars around downtown Metropolis, thereby encouraging the boy in blue to turn up and fight you. Metropolis is one of two large shared environments revealed so far, the other being Gotham City. Unlike World of Warcraft, DC Universe will be comprised of a mix of these environments and separate instances. And while there will still be instances and raids, the emphasis will be on fast-paced action rather than grinding. There will be PvP arenas, and you'll be able to make use of your superpowers and those of others in interesting ways. For example, someone might freeze your character in a block of ice, then pick up the block and chuck it at another player. In some instances, PvP fights will end up turning into giant PvE boss battles. In the future, it's possible we could see models, environments and costumes from the game turning up in other DC Comics properties, and there are plans for plot crossovers. "We can tie-in future DC tentpole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously," said Lee. "The possibilities are numerous and very exciting." UPDATE:This article previously reported that DC Universe Online is out next year. This was an error on our part. Sony Online Entertainment has not yet given any word on when the game will be released. Sorry about that.
MetalHeart
Superheroes like to wear lots of Reds and Yellows.
Iambaytor
Yes you could "end up saving superman from being stabbed by a shard of kryptonite" because he's stupid enough to go sit down on a mountain of the shit and apparently Superman's only power is the ability to lift shit really well, you also get to slash the tires on the Batmobile, ask Jonah Hex what the hell happened to his face, and ask Tim Drake how his dad's doing. IT WILL BE GREAT!
The NZA
its theorized that early on the bright pastels helped them stand out on low-stock paper/inks, if i recall, but yeah, DC still loves it. however, if you were subtltely trying to say that many characters in that pic lack the character to be differentiated from one another, and that its sort of a shame we're going to have to force hype over this one after MS shitcanned the Marvel game, then yes, yes MH i can pretty much tell you the entire fanboy population of this board echoes your sentiments, love. Iambaytor
No, that's a lie. Firestorm is TOTALLY different than Firestorm, because... uh... Starfire has tits! Hmm, I wonder if we'll be able to enter the Batcave, because I've always wanted to push over that giant Penny and leave Jason Todd's costume in the master bedroom with the words "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT BRUCE!" written on the wall in blood. Yeah... good times.
The NZA
hey, so, its being written by Geoff Johns, apparently. Seeing as he's knocking Green Lantern out of the park these days, i think its great news. really though, after the DC X-Men Legends knockoff game last gen, the plot can only be an improvement. Jables
So 360 doesn't get a look-in? Cold Blooded.
The NZA
well...remember, through some back-alley deal we're not privy to, this one was PS3, 360 was getting the Marvel Online one, and even before seeing a damn thing, we both know which was likely gonna be cooler. but that one bombed out, so this is what's left....bish is fussing about the big DC games not usually going well, but hopefully uh, this goes against all that. Honestly though, the trailer sony put up on PSN didnt look exceptional. Neither did the Ultimate Alliance 2 one either, so here's to hoping they both end up great. Jables
Man Ultimate Alliance 2, "Fusion" and all looks like shit. Was all that Civil War talk reserved entirely for MUO? GOd I still have that video on my harddrive and occasionally watch it and cry a little.
The NZA
rumor (from what bish says) was that it'd start in Secret Wars and possibly go up to Civil War. i thought id read something about Secret Invasion but honestly, X-Men Legends 2 hyped Age of Apocalypse but then, there was like 1 side mission and costume variants backing that, so that tells me we could just get Skrull variant outfits...which'd be fun too. but yeah, no idea what itll span yet. Keth
Downloading now as this just went free to play today. I've heard mixed things about it at best. Anyone else gonna give it a try?
Maldron
I enjoyed the beta, but not enough to pay a monthly fee.
Thelogan
FTP eh? I'll have to look into what the catch is. Extended demo, I'm guessing. But shit, I'll download it anyway. At least be able to say I tried. I'll hit you up when I'm up and running. You're probably going to finish before me, so if it has you pick a server or something, post it. Hey, did they pull it off Steam or something? I was sure it was there before...
Maldron
Are y'all doing PS3 or PC? I think that's the only two servers there is. It seems the salty limitation of F2P is that you can only have 2000 in cash on your character at any one point in time.
Thelogan
Eww. Yeah, that's rough. Looking at the details, a one time $5 gets you the "premium" content (inventory slots and other junk). $15 a month gets you the whole enchilada. I've already decided I won't be eating this particular mexican entree, but I MIGHT give them $5.

Jables
I wonder if FTP applies to existing accounts? My copy's been gathering dust since I was meant to renew and decided I'd already spent enough.
