so yeah, this game needed its own thread like back in '01 when we started, but i also wanted to talk about the rumor on this internets that a DS port is finally coming.

Okay, here's the deal. We're hearing that in the new issue of Jump magazine, Square Enix has announced Chrono Trigger DS for a Winter release in Japan. Currently, that rumor and a very shady scan is all we got. Rock gently while repeating to yourself "This is a rumor, this is a rumor" until we get some sort of confirmation.

No idea if its a straight port, updated, or you know, total bullshit. Meantime, let's all talk about why this was one of the greatest RPG's of the 90s (despite having a muted hero) and how much i still love Mitsuda's soundtrack.

This is still one of my favorite games from SNES to this day. I especially loved the New Game+ feature, which lets you start the game from the beginning, but with all your levels and items from the previous game. It's satisfying to defeat the first few bosses with just one hit!

"TAKE THAT GATO, YOU FUCKIN' NAZI! YOU'RE EASIER TO BEAT THAN A GAME OF YAHTZEE!"

(cheesy I know, but don't you all groan at once)

Aw, I was hoping this was going to be about the purported third game that was hopefully going to fix all the shit the second game fucked up.

And what can be said about Chrono Trigger, it has turned based fighting but none of those stupid fucking random encounters, the characters were all intelligent and fleshed out, it was funny, it was tragic, it was fucking awesome and all of this almost made up for the fact that it was criminally short.

Magus' battle theme is up there with Kefka's theme from Final Fantasy 6, Shadow's Theme from Final Fantasy 6, the Silent Hill theme, the Secret of Mana theme, and the theme to GTA: Liberty City Stories as some of the best video game music probably ever.

It's a shame Final Fantasy V was never released for the SNES outside of Japan. When I first played it on the emulators (before FF5-6 came out on PlayStation), the music was just damn awesome! It's right up there in my opinion just behind FF6 and Secret of Mana!

Chrono Trigger had some great music too! My particular favorite from that game was the music for The Land of Zeal.

The only music I remember from 5 that really got the classical music nerd within me panting and howling like the wolf in a Tex Avery cartoon was Gilgamesh' super fast piano theme which later appeared when he became a summon in Final Fantasy 8.

It also appears in Final Fantasy 12, since Gilgamesh is a boss you fight twice in that game.

I haven't gotten around to that one, i use to get so excited about new Final Fantasy games but 11 just killed that for me, I'll have to get around to buying it eventually.

Well FF-12 definitely brought the spirit back into the FF games that 11 just killed. The only thing is the fighting style is a little different. It somewhat combines the traditional command-based fight scenes with that of hand-to-hand fighthing like in Zelda or Secret of Mana, but it's still a great game!

No kidding, Gilgamesh is one TOUGH Mo-Fo! The first time you fight him he has about 100,000 HPs, and the 2nd time over 400,000!!! And trust me, he's not even on the top 10 list of monsters with the highest HP in the game (there's one optional boss that has 50 MILLION HP!!!!!!!!!!)

Jazz group One-ups tore it up at PAX, did a great rendition:

i totally gotta look them up.

also, game's due out over here November 25th!

The One-ups are great, I have two of their albums: The Very Best of Sega, and Xenogears Light. Time and Space: A Tribute to Yasunori Mitsuda is their best, but it is long out of print. Had to DL that one, but if they ever re-release it, that bitch is mine.

Nov 25th cant come quick enough. new info:

Square Enix Representatives revealed to Gamespot employees at E3 2008 that the Nintendo DS version will, indeed, feature the cutscenes created for the PlayStation version.[54] The DS version will also feature a new translation, but still remain close to the original, similar to the re-translations of the earlier Final Fantasy games.[55] Masato Kato also participated in development, overseeing the addition of three new areas—the Dragon Sanctuary, monster arena, and Dimensional Distortion dungeon, said to contain "'shocking' revelations".[56][57] Square touted the game by displaying Akira Toriyama's original art at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show.[58]

new areas sound cool, but the cutscenes (minus the loading, i hope) sound golden to me.

new ending?! *POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW.

Wondering how the upcoming DS Chrono Trigger remake is different? Previously, it's been mentioned that there is a new dungeon. That's not all as according to Famitsu, DS version is getting a new character mode and a new ending. The character mode has event scenes, music tracks, monster data and a treasure map.

Hit the jump for two screens that, Famitsu says, are connected to the new ending.

so yeah, looks like theyre kinda screwed (fans say the first screen translates to "this place..?" or the like, but that last screen...shit, mebbe Schala lives! that'd be awesome, since you only get that outta the good ending for Chrono Cross otherwise.

So the modern twist is updated music? Sounds cool.

Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVI and FFVII are my fav RPGs. Secret of Evermore is way up there for me, too - I know it isn't considered 'a classic'. I got it and it's strategy guide Day One (still have the guide) - that one's close to my heart.

I wanna get the DS port of Chrono Trigger. I forget if that port had the FMVs from the PS1 'remake'.

it does, without the load times too so it's kinda the definitive version as a result - the fetchquest town isn't that great an addition, but the extra ending does bridge the gap between it & Cross a bit better. totally worth picking up if you're down for a replay!

Sweet! I'm gettin' it - that game kicks ass. I don't have a PS3 or a PS4 - just a PS2, and I missed the Chrono Trigger re-release back in the day - but I've seen the FMVs on youtube. Always wanted to play the updated DS version. All I have access to is the SNES version. Another DS cartridge will soon be added to my pile...
