Lorelei Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 So, does anyone like any shoegaze bands? Shoegaze is basically a form of alternate rock that emerged from the UK in the 80's. We're talking effects pedals here, hence the term "shoegaze" "space rock" and "dream pop" are also similar. Example of a few bands: My Bloody Valentine (refer to them as MBV), Galaxie 500, Asobi Seksu, Slowdrive, Cocteau Twins (dream pop), Ride, Lush, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc. I'm pissed cause I missed MBV play. If you're looking to try this out get MBV's "Loveless" that's a solid 10/10 album. So much time and money was spent making this album, they fired and hired about 1000 audio engineers. The album literally pisses all over every other band around at the time, I'm still not sure how they managed to make an album that sounds like Loveless. also if you've ever seen Lost In Translation MBV was used in the OST. My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow [off of Loveless] Slowdrive - Alison [off of Souvlaki]
the division of joy Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I'm somewhat of a shoegaze fan, MBV, Cocteau Twins and the Jesus and Mary Chain especially. Kinda got into these when i was just turning 18, and fell out of love with them for a while, but i'm really digging them again now, and i agree wholeheartedly on the Loveless point. Stunning album.
Lorelei Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 people always compare that album to Souvlaki, some people even prefer it
dante Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 The only song I've listened to that was "shoegazing" was Stars by Hum. I like it, but I don't know if I could get into the majority of those songs.
Lorelei Posted July 5, 2008 Author Posted July 5, 2008 hey doj funny you like shoegaze when it's noise
Lorelei Posted July 5, 2008 Author Posted July 5, 2008 How much do you know about music production or genres like noise rock/noise pop, no wave..? Shoegaze (stuff like MBV's Loveless), is very close in relation to noise. How couldn't it be? They're using the same equipment, but just for a different outcome. You might know who and what came out of the 80s noise rock. Even Hendrix paved the wave for noise rock, since it's a form of psychedelia. Shoegazing groups developed an entirely distinct form of noise rock. Whilst Sonic Youth is fairly aggressive, MBV produced a warm, feminine, but also dissonant, formless and psychedelic genre that belongs in the noise rock tradition. Shit, just look what Steve Albini and Kevin Shields have produced and artists they've helped produce and collaborated with
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Whatever makes ya happy lil buddy. Basing your argument on similar production techniques/styles is a pretty weak leg to stand on, take the rap game for example, sure, 50 cent might be produced much in the same to something like immortal technique, but they're not really comparible. I don't see how you could compare The Jesus And Mary Chain to Merzbow. The rest of what you said isn't particularly relevant.
Lorelei Posted July 5, 2008 Author Posted July 5, 2008 JMC = shoegaze/alt.rock -> noise rock -> harsh noise (Merzbow) Sigh... It's completely relevant. DoJ all those cool noises you're hearing bands like MBV play aren't chords. Please don't tell me you're one of those people that argue jazz and metal have nothing in common?
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Sigh... It's completely relevant. DoJ all those cool noises you're hearing bands like MBV play aren't chords. No way, you're blowing me away here Thats still not to say they're out and out noise. Hell, my favorite band has elements of noise to it, still doesn't make me any more a fan of the genre itself. I can deal with bits of it, with something else thrown into the mix, just not full blown noise. To try pull me up on something as minute as this, because an artist or a genre itself has elements of something i don't particularly like to it, its kinda silly.
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Yes, you make my decisions for me, so you do.
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 The words "so" and also "what" apply here.
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Of course i will, after all you make my decisions, don't you.
the division of joy Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 But if you want to get technical about it, and from the sounds of it, you want to, MBV and a lot of shoegazing bands would have been more noise-pop than nose rock, MBV for example, most definite noise pop, very much the same case with The jesus and mary chain. So to say i like noise rock holds no real water based on the assumption that i like shoegaze. I'd also highly disagree with your idea that psych rock could would also be noise rock, and also to say that hendrix was in part, noise rock, its a bold and also silly claim to make. But don't let me and educated facts burst your bubble.
Lorelei Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 So you're saying noise-rock/pop didn't come from psychedelia?
the division of joy Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Noise rock maybe, not so much noise pop. Its still all very loose claims though on your part.
MetalHeart Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I think THIS should will answer everyone's questions regarding Noise/Shoegaze.
the division of joy Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 *paws at the blocked page i've been delivered to* Tease....
