The NZA
Finally got to watch this one panch left with me a while back, with LL & SDPS, and yeah, so....that Takashi Miike, huh? From the sets, to much of the plot, to even the Morricone-esque score (and even some camera angles), there's many parts that feel like a clear homage to the spaghetti western. And yes, we could go on for hours here about how those amazing films come from Kurosawa's Yojimbo, but this thread's about Django (which wiki tells me is a retelling itself). The film's quite unique even from the jump: Taretino's telling a story in between the shootout with pretty much everyone else, who's largely chinese/some japanese as well, but fear not the subtitles - they're all acting in english, which carries surprisingly well at some bits, and laughably bad mostly during the times when its supposed to be. Calling the action over the top feels almost off, and not just for the subtle Stallone reference, mind you. You're clearly watching a movie that's having fun with itself, as well as the genre its set in. The predominantly asian cast/feel also brings some fun blending moments, the most obvious of which in my head is the gun vs katana finale. No idea where'd youd find this if not torrenting, but check it out if you're in the mood for something that bypasses the subtlety of crossing the kurosawa/leone's genres and just sort've pretends they're one in the same. If you're curious about the tone of that experience, Beat Takeshi's recent take on Zatoichi comes to mind, too.
