Early impressions:

Activision treated us to an early look at Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows at Comic-Con this week, giving us a taste of the game's suit-switching mechanic and highlighting boss battles with classic villains Venom and Vulture. In Web of Shadows, Venom has infected the people of New York with a symbiote plague, creating hundreds of mini-Venoms that our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man must dispatch.

Peter Parker has been infected by the alien symbiote, too, but has total control over its abilities, allowing him to switch from the more nimble red and blue suit to a more destructive black and white suit on the fly. Both suits have their advantages and disadvantages, as the black suit lets Spidey whip foes with symbiotic tentacles and carries a heftier punch, but can result in more collateral damage to the city.

That trade-off comes into play in how the citizens of New York, as well as your superpowered allies and enemies perceive you later in the game. With a cast of "Marvel Team Up" regulars, folks like Wolverine and Luke Cage, you'll need to make sure the good guys are on your good side.

Shaba Games, developer of Web of Shadows, looks to have gone to great lengths to capture that Spider-Man feel. All the stock Spidey moves are in there — wall-climbing, web-swinging, spider-sensing — with cinematic camera angles complimenting each. The camera will pan out and strafe when Spider-Man is leaping through the air, attaching himself to foes with a carefully placed web shot, making it look easy to string together combos.

Sounds like the recent New Avengers "Planet of the Symbiotes" thing, right? plus, youve got NA cameos there. The black suit, plus the idea of fighting on the ground, air etc sounds awesome.

Recent impressions also sound great, and include details like not dying when spidey hits the water this time, as well as never-before-seen villains coming, which could be cool too.

Foorage!

having just gotten back my dreamcast, i wanna play the PS1 port again. I recall that one being fun, you saying that's just nostalgia?

Wait, what PS1 port was on the DC? the first one or Enter: Electro? Also, you gotta inform me somehow on this burning DC games thing you have going. I'm told it's pretty easy...

In regards to this, I was pretty stoked until I, like Bob remembered there's probably gonna be combat involved. *sigh*.

The first one, one with alla villains and stan lee narrarating, shit was a blast.

burning DC games is awesome, you just need a swap disc and you're done. i spent a week or so just trying to get the bleem-emulated PS1 games that'd look sharper.

i specifically posted the combat video to put some minds at ease, still no good?

Maybe this one will be longer than 15 minutes.

I've seen shots of what they're doing with the fighting for this one and it looks really good, my second concern is once I beat the game what motivation do I have to play further. Both Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man had a bunch of pointless fetchquests, races, and dates with Mary Jane that were about as fun as hammering drywall screws into the end of my dick.

If they would give us a reason to play after storyline mode ends that would be great. Because what good is a sandbox environment when it's no fun to explore?

skeet - ive no idea bout DC emulation, i thought since you had like all of sega's systems evar you had a dreamcast lying about.

thought you can easily emulate the PS1 copy on a PSP, among other places.

baytor - well, once the plot's done...what would you have spidey do? keep stopping old ladies from getting mugged, or play online cops & robbers GTA style or wha?

i guess sandbox games lose me cause once the plots done, im usually done too.

Be able to redo boss fights, obstacle courses, extra bosses that don't need to be in the story mode (Rhino anyone?), portions where the police chase you down and you have to lose them and change back into civilian clothes, sparring matches with some of the other heroes in the game.

Anything but "fight this group of random thugs", "Rush all the way across fucking Manhattan in 3 seconds", or my personal favorite and the reason I wished I could beat up civilians "get the balloon for the ridiculously annoying kid."

I liked Ultimate Spider-man. The combat was still lousy but you could see where they were trying to make the world more fun and the graphics were beautiful. I liked that sometimes you'd respond to a break-in or a shoot-out and instead of having to deal with random thugs, it'd be one of Spidey's more pathetic villains like Shocker or Boomerang. It really fit the tone of the books to have those little "you again!" moments. If they continued in that vein, with random villain events happening (more than just break-ins, bigger stuff) and less 30 member random gangs, the sandbox world could be really cool.

ps - I also liked Ultimate Spider-man because you got to eat that fuckin' kid with the balloon! Fuck it, I want another Ultimate Spidey game.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I was fingering the Jewish community, but if you're game I'll take a stab at Republicans too.

Bob-I saw the first one last night with Wolvie, but there's another with Cage? Heh, my work is choosy about what it filters, so clearly it agrees with you that Cage looks ridiculous.

Then your work filter and I are going to get along just fine. Picture Luke Cage with a yellow tshirt so tight it gives him Robert Paulson-worthy bitch tits, a big classy belt buckle that says "CAGE" and a head that looks like it belongs to Shaft (the crappy Samuel L version) but two sizes too small.
