I'm gonna have to disagree slightly here. While Maus and Sin City are good for people who are just jumping on (though Sin City is iffy depending on what story it is) but Watchmen, V, and Frank Miller's Batman books are the kinda stuff you have to work up to, Punisher Max I'm not sure as I have not read them .

And seeing as you are a close personal friend of Rachael I think you probably wouldn't like Sandman. It wasn't my cup of tea but you might find something to like about it and it does have its moments even if you share my opinion of the series as a whole. The graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere is also a good place to start but I do warn you, if you've never been too crazy about comics in the past work your way up to Frank Miller and especially Alan Moore, they take a bit of getting used to.

Anything by Mike Mignola is usually pretty good and Preacher as well, while I favor Hitman I think Preacher works better for casual readers, Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a pretty decent starter as well just stay far away from his other stuff till you've read the first two volumes. Brian K. Vaughn's Ex Machina would also be a good bet, as I said I haven't read much Punisher Max but you might want to read Marvel Knight's Punisher first to get into the character a little bit it's an easier transition. That's all I can think of for now.

i can see where you're coming from, but i gave v and watchmen to a friend of mine who had only read preacher (i gave that to him aswell) before and he loved 'em, in fact those books i listed are the first books i gave him.

despite loving all of those he still does'nt consider himself a reader of comics, some people :ok:

Pride of Baghdad's based on the true story of 4 Lions released from an Iraq zoo during the 'War on Terror', kinda seeing the devastation through their eyes and just following their journey. It's Vaughan writing and the pencils, I forget the name but the art is just breathtaking.

WE3's kind of a weird Science take on something like Homeard Bound, by Morrison & Quitely.

I just hate having someone's introduction being the guy who writes a page of dialogue and then jacks off to it like a retarded chimp. Even his good stuff is a bit much and can be a tad offputting and pretty much anything he's done since the second volume of LXG is complete shit (I'm sure someone will inevitably point out the one I've missed but don't even try and defend Promethea, Black Dossier, or that one with Alice, Wendy, and Dorthy.

i've only read

watchmen

v for vendetta

killing joke

swamp thing vol.1-2

From Hell

some of miracleman

and

old gangsters never die

all of which i loved

i also read the first issue of league of extraordinary gentlemen though i thought it was quite poor, does it pick up?

the sandman hate baffles me. there' s pretentious works all around but none are that well written.

Mignola's Hellboy is a lot of fun, i can co-sign most other recommendations - ASC, skeet's spot on with We3 and Pride of Baghdad both; just really great, short trades that show you why Vaughn is such an amazing writer.

if you found yourself enjoying Ennis' writing particularly, his Hellblazer run is pretty good too, and finally all in trade. Hitman's another great that starts silly and turns into a favorite, and War Story's another good series. if you'd like something shorter, Unknown Soldier was good as i recall, as was Heartland (hellblazer side-book).

either way, welcome to the fold!

Transmet hate ??? That's odd.

Those are the only two series I have completely purchased lol I'm just a bookstore rat. I read as much as I can off the shelves for free as I sip on 3 dollar latte's :sarcasm: Almost done with the wwhulk series myself.

Grats amynicole for trying something new. I really hope you enjoy it, the graphic art and writing of modern comics are getting better and better.

Yes, but it takes a bit.

And Nick, I did enjoy a fair amount of Sandman I was just so disgusted with the character and the whole gothy tone of the book that I found a good portion of it annoying. Though the bit in Hell was calss.

how far'd you get in the book? morpheus defines emo but gets a pass for being, uh, an embodiment of an emotion. just, you know, dont let his more obsessive fans paint the picture.

I read Preluds and Nocturnes. That basically covers Nightmar... I mean Morpheus getting all his cool powers back. I read it twice just to see if I'd enjoy it better the second time since the first time about all I did was pick out cameos, but my enjoyment increased only a small bit more the next time.

I try not to let the droves of annoying moody vampires dissuade me in much the same way I enjoy anything Jhonen Vasquez writes, the problem is I am a big Gaiman fan, I thoroughly enjoy his work, and that's part of the reason why I don't like Sandman, in comparison to most of his books it's pretty weak. And this isn't even counting that Morpheus is more or less Nightmare from Marvel Comics with moody(er) tendencies and a chip on his shoulder.

but...but you stopped at the first trade. i mean, it went on for like 75 issues, and i personally think Season of Mists around the 20's or so was the best. why not try more?

Maaaan, I have got everything Mike Mignola has ever written, Battle Pope, Ex Machina, 300, a shit-ton of Jonah Hex, Punisher MAX, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Savage Dragon, The Maxx, and every comic that Deadpool ever graced to get through. I will get to it, bitch! Stop nagging me!

Jesus, you're suffocating me! I'm going to Moe's

Oh ho ho. Whats all this hating on Transmet? You used to be cool...

AmyNicole, you should check out the Comics noobs thread for further suggestions. I started out in your situation a few months ago with Preacher and never looked back. Dont listen to what this godless heathen says either. Let the guiding light of Spider into your heart and you will be saved. The Chair Leg of Truth demands it.
