yes, when he's not desinging chidren's playgrounds, he's doing future PS3 exclusives. This one got announced like last year, but this is the first look at any kind of gameplay.

For those of you wondering "what the fuck am i looking at and why should i care": its the new franchise from Keita Takahashi, the genius who gave us Katamari Damacy and We love Katamari, 2 of my favorites from last-gen, so this is nothing but love.

you really cant explain, or even show, these kinds of games. Katamari looked like insane japanese nonsense before i got to play it years back, and ive just adored it since - in that vein, this one looks weird & simplistic, but if anyone knows how to make a causal game that ill play for years after i finish most of my hardcore ones, its this guy.

I'm not sold on this yet - Katamari looked like nonsense, but at least you could sort of form an idea of what it really was.

This just looks... well, it looks like what I've just seen: going around a sort of tunnel with catchy music.

I'm still faithful, tho.

I love these types of games only becuase it's something mindless to pass the time between time I should or could, but don't want to, do anything else. I was also a huge whore for tetris.

Nobi Nobi boy trailer

It'll be out in Japan and Korea on January 29, and in recognition of the game's lack of structure (you basically just stretch a boy around like a snake, watching him...do...stuff) it's priced at 800 (USD$9).

Sony Europe tell us only that it'll be out in "early 2009", which isn't very helpful, but they also tell us it'll cost 4, which is helpful. American info should be on its way once American PR folks finish their breakfasts.

gameplay details!

noby_boy_esrb.jpg

Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi's next game, Noby Noby Boy, has been rated by the ESRB. That's good news. But even better is the software ratings board's helpful description of what Noby Noby Boy is.

Oh sure, you may have actually paid attention to previews of the PlayStation 3 game, hopefully due any day now, but some of the slower Kotaku editors still don't quite get Noby Noby Boy. And Takahashi's certainly no help!

Thorough ESRB descriptions, help us out!

This is a puzzle game in which players control a large snake-like creature whose objective is to grow by gobbling up objects (e.g., mailboxes, small animals, houses, etc.). Players advance in the game by growing the creature as big as possible and then reporting its length to a character in space. Consumed objects sometimes pop out of the snake's rear end, making a comical "splat" sound.

Well, that sounds quite a bit like Katamari Damacy to me. Consider me signed up, especially now that we can expect comical "splat" sounds.

so, its like katamari but with poop? ill take two copies.

five bucks?!

noby_price.jpg

Namco Bandai's American arm confirmed the updated release date of Noby Noby Boy today, putting a low, low price on the PlayStation 3-bound thing-eating game. It's cheap. Five measly bucks cheap.

Due on February 19th, the PlayStation Network release will let plays stuff the titular BOY with everything in the game world, letting him stretch to incredible lengths. Recorded gameplay videos can be uploaded to YouTube from within game and players can collaborate online to unlock new stuff.

you cant beat that with a bat! press release i forgot to post last time:

oh, snap.

you know ill try to get em quick cause im really hoping this will be this gen's We love Katamari for me, in that it was a brilliant, casual game id just put on in between whatever else i was playing. I adored it so, enough to bust my balls for the Colossal Katamari achievement in BK. i fear i might be getting my hopes up, since Katamari games look a lot larger than this one (i wish it was a full release), but we'll see. so excited.

that's pretty much everyone's impression so far. again, the more katamari-like it gets, the more my excitement grows. i just hope its got a lot of replay/varied levels to justify all the time i wanna put into it when drinking.

So no one's posted since Nobi's been released. Wondering if anyone else has played it. Just finished off the trophies m'self.

I have to say, anyone who thought Katamari was as cracked out as a game can get needs to give this a spin. It's hard to even call it a game, really it's more of a networked stress reliever/toy.

Literally the only objective is to stretch your character. Whenever you feel like it, you can report how much you've stretched to the game, which then adds your length to a pool of the combined length that everyone, everywhere playing the game has reported. Last I checked, the running total had just reached a length that would reach the moon. The game than applauds your effords and encourages you to continue stretching, that we might reach the hand of friendship out across the universe.

As simple as the premise and graphics may be, it's both endearing and suprisingly ameliorating to the psyche. I found myself exploring the randomized worlds for hours. It's hard to describe the strange serene feeling that washed over me as I hurled my elongated, rainbow colored body through the air, devesating the donut achitechture of a society comprised solely of ninjas and kangaroos.

Plus any game where I can create human/animal hybrids with my colon automatically gets full marks. I mean, anything after that is just bonus.

haha, well said.

cant wait to see what comes of the forthcoming DLC. i know we both agree its a shame this wasnt an all-out disc release, but like i said to you earlier (and you said here), it still nearly fills the katamari-size hole i was feeling this gen.

the moon was great, i ate astronauts and somehow (?) got a rainbow stripe or something and got huge enough to break into two so i could eat my own butt. it was magical.
