The NZA
wait, what? The Japanese cellphone sequel to Final Fantasy IV looks to be heading to North America, as the ESRB rates Final Fantasy IV: The After Years for the Nintendo Wii. Once again the Entertainment Software Review Board ruins the surprise for everyone, as an entry appears for Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Released in episodic format last year for Japanese cell phones as Final Fantasy IV the After: Tsuki no Kikan, the game follows the adventures of Cecil and Rosa's son Ceodore, 17 years after the original game's ending. Along the way players encounter returning characters and strange new ones as they unravel the mystery behind the reappearance of the planet's second moon. The game features a few mechanics new to the Final Fantasy series. Character and monster abilities change with the phase of the moon, which shifts every time the party rests at an inn, with certain rare monsters only appearing during specific lunar phases. The game also features Band Abilities, which are devastating multi-character combo attacks. As far as release dates and platform specifics, the ESRB listing only reveals the Wii as the console and an E for Everyone rating, along with the following description: This is a 2D role-playing game in which players embark on an adventure involving magical crystals and a mysterious kingdom. Players traverse across a field map or through dungeons and can enter into turn-based battles along the way. Players use a menu screen to select attacks or magic spells against tiny enemies (e.g., leopards, birds, knights, fish monsters, etc.) that blink and disappear when defeated. An item called "Bacchus Wine" is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle. While not specifically listed, we're almost positive Final Fantasy IV: The After Years will be coming to WiiWare sometime later this year. so...i dont think anyone asked for it, but there it is. And here i was thinking Secret of Evermore was the last we'd see of Cecil...
Maldron
The Wii: Home of Japanese Cellphone games? I'd think Squeenix would stand to make more money releasing it as a cell game in the states than on wiiware... I'd think the majority of the wii's install base doesn't know or care about FFIV. While the same's probably true of Cell phone users, there's probably a lot more of 'em. Still, I'm all for stealing formerly-exclusive Japanese games. Shine on, shine on. The NZA
...you think so? iphone games seem to sell, do other brands though? id be curious to see if those crystal chronicles game sell at all, FF has huge name brand recognition. plus, wii could use more exclusives. between this, cave story (presumably) and strong bad, wiiware's shaping up for me. Maldron
I haven't gotten big into downloadable titles anywhere, actually... there's a bunch of them that look okay, but there's no demo so I can't decide if I'm in or not. And even then, I sometimes wait for price drops, like I did with The Last Guy. THERE'S a game that was worth five bucks. Fight the zombies!! I dunno... it's hard to make decisions sometimes, in this infinite sea of games. And I don't have an iphone, I just have a super-slim stick of a device. It makes calls, sends texts, and doesn't make my pockets feel overcrowded, which is awesome. I'm just trying to cover for the fact I have yet to beat FFIV. The NZA
for shame! it was my first proper FF game. not into the DS remake? come to think of it, im not sure youve got a DS. Youre right though, its a shame only XBL puts out demos of all their titles, its a really great system and the others miss a lotta opportunities for not following suit. hey, if i can get a PSN slot open, wanna trade my Noby Noby Boy for Last Guy? always wanted to play that one. Maldron
I wouldn't turn it down, but don't stiff somebody on your account for my account. WIT. I have a DS, but my FFIV is on the PS1.
Iambaytor
While I'm glad to be revisiting FF IV I'm with everybody else in going "huh?" I mean I look forward to maybe seeing some elaboration on the story of Yang and Kain (maybe Palom and Porom even though I only see one them among that block of characters there, also it appears the "spoony bard" is back) I thought this thing got the hose coming out as a cell-phone game and now as Wiiware. I wish if Square decided to make sequels they wouldn't half-ass it but I guess it worked out okay with Crisis Core (that was a cell-phone game before a PSP game, yes?) One day I will see a sequel to Final Fantasy VI and I refuse to admit defeat!
The NZA
wait, you mean tellah or edward? and i know what youre thinking of, but nah, Crisis Core was a PSP only game, and a prequel. Los told me the cell one was a sequel. as for FF VI: you sure, man? i kinda want well enough left alone.
archangel
I'm so happy I'm light headed I am worried, though. FFVI was probably the best of the lot, IMHO. Wouldn't remaking it ala Lunar with today's graphics have a higher impact than a sequel, which is pretty un FF like?

In response to Final Fantasy VI: I feel there's yet more potential to be mined. The game ended pretty openly, I mean yeah Kefka was dead but the world was still seriously fucked, Shadow jumped off the tower presumably to his death but I don't buy it especially with the implications that he's Relm's father never quite tied up, Cyan is a knight without a kingdom, Gau is still a wild child, nobody knows what the fuck Gogo is, and Terra's story felt half over especially since she got shoved out of the spotlight once Celes came into the picture. Plus I want more Ultros

The NZA
yeah, put like that there's dangling plotlines. i just think we've read enough comics to be nervous of any project that was written as a stand-alone getting a sequel (think DKR). In FF precedence, i heard FF X-2 was good if you stuck with it, but that's about it. Crisis Core worked great for me as a prequel, but ive not seen them do this well much. In FF precedence, i heard FF X-2 was good if you stuck with it, but that's about it. Crisis Core worked great for me as a prequel, but ive not seen them do this well much. I heard that as well and maybe if they'd concentrated more on making a pure sequel and less on making The Spice Girls go to Zanarkand (and borrowing that fucking horrible class system from Final Fantasy 3/5/Tactics) it could have been what it was. The sequels/prequels/etc. for Final Fantasy 7 just swiped away that cheesecloth-thin vaneer of greatness that was the storyline and exposed the horrible greasy haired emo underneath. But I guess if Crisis Core was good it makes up for Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus(Never forget!) Plus let's be honest, as batshit crazy as Square has gotten over the years they did put out the best Final Fantasy game since 6 a few years ago and also have the benefit of not having Frank Miller writing for them. I think they could do that and a REAL Chrono Trigger sequel and all would be well. P.S. Cecil was in Secret of Evermore?
The NZA
yeah, i didnt touch Dirge. again, your mistake with Advent Children was leaving the volume on. Try it again on mute; i swear you'll love it. also, to answer your question: it was prolly the coolest part of the game. Cecil made an appearance in Secret of Evermore as a merchant in Ebon Keep. He asks the protagonist if he's heard of him, and makes reference to the events of Final Fantasy IV in his attempts to remind him. He mentions he is still married to Rosa, although she does not appear, and gives the player their Bazooka weapon he found on a cliff. Cecil sells powerful medieval-themed equipment he claims to have acquired on his adventures, although none of them are actually items that appear in Final Fantasy IV. gunsmithx
evermore... great game.... I think 6 would be better served by a remake that tied up some of those story lines rather then a sequeal per se...
Iambaytor
evermore... great game.... I think 6 would be better served by a remake that tied up some of those story lines rather then a sequeal per se... Only if they pulled an Okami and made essentially 2 games in the form of one. 8 filled up 4 discs and it was spectacularly mediocre, surely they can come up with more than there is. Also... holy shit!

Iambaytor
Yes it is, even if the secret character they picked for Final Fantasy XII sucks major ass. (I firmly look forward to Kefka vs. Sephiroth fight)
The NZA
...why does Square do this to me?! in related news, bishopcruz is proud to announce his PSP modding service emporium is now open for business! i'm a satisfied customer, and ive got the japanese version of this game (domestic's out this summer) sitting on my drive. Should i play it? i dunno, i think im gonna finish god of war first or something. anyway, i hope the art direction is somehow better than this, personally. Iambaytor
I'm holding out in hopes that, like all other PSP games actually worth playing (GTA: Libert City Stories, GTA: Vice City Stories, God of War Chains of Olympus, Twisted Metal: Head On) it will port to PS2 and I will not have to buy an overpriced handheld that ironically looks like the Atari Linx and sucks more ass than an airplane toilet. (I'm still scratching my head over Garland making the list as the villain from Final Fantasy 1 but I guess he was the only one who really talked. Also I kinda feel that Seymour would be more appropriote than Jecht but I guess there needs to be at least one male villain that looks like his balls have dropped. Also, I'm still pissed about the secret character they chose for Final Fantasy 12 they should have chosen someone cool like Basch, or Fran, or Balthier.) RPGs and such, its pretty much got the best ones outside of the FF IV remake (Jean D'Arc, Disgaea, FF Crisis Core, etc), im quite fond of the MGS's and the quirky japanese ones like Patapon and Loco Rocco are the best. im just said the Katamari game doesnt play worth a shit without a 2nd analog. the homebrew scene is amazing, too - not as many random utilities as the DS (PDA etc) but it emulates things like SCUMM games, SNES etc crazy awesome. The way it handles PS1 games alone made it worth it for me, since a lot've em are too expensive to reasonably hunt down. also? God of War didnt get ported. anyway, Crisis Core didnt get ported, i dont think this will either. after the way that and Phantasy Star Portable/Monster Hunter sold in Japan, im not holding my breath. Iambaytor
See I didn't think Twisted Metal would get ported either, if you recall that shit was a launch title and they held onto it for a while, eventually they all seem to cave and God of War and Crisis Core will eventually. When PSPs are going for ultra cheap I'll get on the boat if nothing else than just for a chance to play Tomba again but much like the PS3 I'm not feeling like buying a juggernaut of a home entertainment system that has like 10 good games (at least 5 of which I can get for another system that's cheaper/I already have)
