I'll start with Lake Tahoe, directed by Fernando Eimbcke (Temporada de Patos/Duck Season, lots of music videos): This movie's name used to be ¿Te Acuerdas de Lake Tahoe?, which means Remember Lake Tahoe? I turned Salo off partway through since I found no redeeming qualities in it. I understand what I think it's point was, but I don't feel the need to actually watch it to get that point. As I got older I began seeking out stuff beyond the "norm" that I was finding in the US, stuff from Europe, stuff from Asia, nearly anything I could find I tried to watch. Did a lot of tape trading back in the day, too, and saw a lot of stuff I wouldn't have seen otherwise, even before so many companies like Anchor Bay and Elite sprung up and made all sorts of that type of movie readily available over here. Whether or not it was a direct result of Salo is debatable, but imo it seems very likely. Plot in a nutshell: Some rich guys kipnap/buy around 20 teenagers (half male, half female), they bring them out to an isolated palace with some middle aged prostitutes to act as teachers and storytellers. The rich men then proceed to do practically every fucked up thing imaginable to their wards: Shit eating, sodomy, being forced to eat meat from the ground while acting like a dog, and the meat is fulla (SURPRISE!) nails...all kinds of terrible shit. Anyone who doesn't comply is brutally tortured and murdered, i.e. scalped, branded, tongue and eyes cut out etc. Salo leaves a mark, and your soul will never be clean again. I was watching her more than the movie, she made it through the shit eating alright (although clearly horrified). It was when someone was telling a story, one of the very chill moments, then I believe she started thinking about the shit eating and she heaved. It was the beginning of the end of our relationship.
